Say you drive in the middle of the fairway but the disc land directly behind a big tree that is in the middle of the fairway.
Can you go back in a straight line from the back of the tree? This would give you a much better throw than having to throw from just behind the tree
How far back can you throw from spot of disc?

No you can't go straight back from the tree. Even with a tree directly in front of your lie, you must play the lie the same as ever...one supporting point directly behind the marker within 30 cm on the line of play. You are allowed to straddle out away from the tree while maintaining that one supporting point, provided no part of your body contacts the playing surface ahead of your lie.
PDGA Rules of Play 803.03 Stance subsequent to teeing off & 803.04 Obstacles and Relief.
