RI And Southeast Mass People!

Post by TattooD »

Hello everyone... Im fairly new in the disc golf world but I have immediately fallen in love with the sport and the people seem to be nice and actually care about this sport and everything to do with it.

It does suck that RI doesnt have many courses and I did read quite a bit of posts today about possible spots and whatnot.

Im just surprised no one has really posted much about making new Northern RI course.... Ok Roger Williams, Lincoln Woods, And Butterfly Farms, all sound like decent ideas that could be thrown together and id enjoy them to the fullest, but if I had to pick one spot it would have to be Slater Park...

People may present the idea that there is no space, but I beg to differ. This idea comes in out of the way where hopefully the course will not be touched or destroyed too much. My proposal is designing one that would run along the new bike path from Slater to the connecting Rumford baseball fields, don't have to be that big, but thats a lot of space to work with. Maximum borders that I see are already in space, from the Pawtucket / Seekonk line to the Runford fields, staying between the bike path and the East Providence / Seekonk rail system.

Parking within the park should not be a problem and since it is open until 9 PM on any given day which would also allow way more time rather then a 4:30 GATE time at Borderline (Which is currently my "Home Course") Also inside the East Providence Industrial Park at the far back is a decent strip of road that branches off the main road next to said train tracks and path which we could also see if permitted parking could be allowed.

I feel as though with the trees and slopes, along with the waterways and marshes, a killer course could be designed. With only people usually bent on exercise going back there (Since the slight demolition of the "Sugar Bowl" - Simply put: A place that kids and teens have ALREADY been kicked out of for partying and using offroad vehicles) and security going back there time to time, I dont think we would have much of a problem at all. Hopefully everyone would respect nature and clean up after themselves and others trash, and I think it could seriously work.

I happen to have volunteered at the Dagett Farm in Slater Park for 6 years in my teen years, and have become aqquainted with the people and some city workers around there quite well.. So I dont think it would be a problem if we ever needed to borrow shovels, tools, or anything else we might need to help this project along.

I currently have no idea who spear-heads course projects, NEFA, or how to even start going about all this, but I am willing to help in any way, shape, or form, not only to try and make more courses, but to help restore and refurbish current courses. (I LOVE THE MATS AT BORDERLINE! LMAO THANK YOU FOR ALL WHO DID THOSE). Feel free to send me in the right directions, offer additional ideas, or anything else you seem fit to want to contribute.

I am actually going to be designing somehow a practice regiment at the field directly next to me, Dagett Field, In Pawtucket. I will be working on field, slope, and wooded practice. I will be getting at least 1 basket personally so there will be an actual target within the next couple weeks. I invite anyone who may not be able to go all the way to MA or CT or Even Southern RI to come and enjoy the game with me when everything gets set up. The group I go with also is considering buying more baskets for practice also. I can also store them at my house if you dont wanna lug them around (5 houses from field... HOW EASY!) and maybe we can actually make a practice course sometime.

I thank you if you actually took the time to read this, and hope that I will be able to start my contributations to this wonderful sport with the help from everyone.

In defense of Borderland...the gate closes later as the season goes on. It should be switching to 5 real soon, and we switch the clocks in a month so gates will be open until 7 before we know it.

As for RI courses...the more the merrier...

I'm a lefty too :thumleft: Backhand or Flick?

According To Ranger Dave... Summer means open until 8, and do not get me wrong, as my "Home Course" I love it and the challenge... But Slater is 9 o clock YEAR ROUND

And yes I agree the more the better.. Hopefully ill meet the right people to get that project rolling

And backhand... Ive tried a couple flicks but I wanna actually practice before I take them on the course they're still a lil WILD LMAO

Funny, I was just speaking with Pawtucket Parks & Rec about possibly renting athletic fields from them for ultimate and I mentioned to him that there has been some discussion on this newsgroup about putting in a course at Slater for disc golf. I explained to him the game and where you were thinking about putting in a course. He seemed somewhat interested, he did not say ouright no which is always a good start lol....

Bill Mulholland at Pawtucket Parks & Rec. (728-0500, x251) is the man to speak with. He is a regular golfer but did not have much knowledge about disc golf.

The ball is in your court, I would suggest setting up a meeting and showing him where you think a course is viable and go from there.

Hey Alan,

Love the enthusiasm...I feel that when you speak to the gentleman that Matty has pointed you towards...

There are a few things that you may not have considered...

An 18 Pole Hole Disc golf Course needs in the realm of about 20-30 acres of almost exclusive space....

There are parking issues..imo with an 18 hole layout in order for a reasonable amount of people to be able to use the facilty that a parking area to accomadate 25 to 30 cars should be part of the disscussion...

I disagree with Matty that you should propose right off the bat where you think the course would be the best...

I feel that it may be more prudent to ask this gentle man after telling him about your ideas of how cool and wondeful a Disc Golf Course could be on this property...that you may ask him where that 25-30 acre parcell on his land might be from his perspective...

I wish the best of Luck...

Thanks,

I understand exactly where your coming from.... The area I propose is where the path runs directly though....

Map - http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a141/ ... 3/Golf.jpg

I know it dont look much on a map but I encourage anyone to go to the area and look for yourself.... Its only a 1.5 mile bike path with probably enough good to set up 2 to 3 holes one next to another parallel all the way up... And even some areas bigger then that... IF YOU WANTED TO (Not How I Would) but the room in between will leave a wooden and challenging course

Parking, well at the beginning of the path there is already currently enough room for 10 cars to park in a area next to and alongside the roadside... Plus 3 parking lots a walking distance away each that could hold at least 20 spots i can think of EACH if not even more.... And more roadside (The park does get busy rarely, but no one complains much if you need to park wherever along the road.

Im usually a good planner... But I admit I jump too fast Sometimes... Did have to do some slight thinking though, but I had that all figured out before I opened my mouth

The only REAL problem I would see is funding since Pawtucket probably wouldnt dish out the money for the creation, but there are many ways of going about that....

Damn What Is It Called

Post by TattooD »

This might sound a little stupid only because I dunno the name...

Anyone know where I can find those things that roll on the ground with the handle you hold that measure distance??... Made a smaller practice course near my house but unsure if the distance is "up to par" (No pun intended LMAO)

Price is not an option I will get a lot of use out of it so im sure it will be worth it regardless...

Alan,

They're just called "measuring wheels". They'll run you $70 to $160 depending if you want one that can measure REALLY long distances (without having to reset it - when it "trips over") or ones that are digital, etc. Yup, they come in handy - for other non-dg stuff. You can probably pick one up at most GOOD hardware stores...or a Home Depot, Lowes.

Awesomeness... Thank you! I remember someone calling them some technical name before so I didn't think of it as a lamence term. LMAO

Yea basically to measure practice holes I set up near me and start to figure out if the Slater Park course will be worth it based on the size of holes and whatnot. Also helps to know how far I can throw so I can aim for actual goals.

Im going to go start examining the area I wanted to out it in more (I know it too well but of course I gotta be more technical before I present anything). But this just makes it one step closer :D

Hi, Alan -

For promoting DG in your state, you might consider this television option:

http://00002po.previewcoxhosting.com/

I produce and distribute a disc golf themed TV show (Disc Golf Live video magazine) and I'm happy to provide my shows at no cost to folks across the country who submit the show for broadcast locally. In RI, pretty much the whole state is served by one outlet, so its particularly easy to get some DG on TV. I did a quick tour of their website and it looks like they're a bit behind the curve, using tapes still. The DVDs I send out come complete with a bars/tone option for those who need to make up a tape (VHS works at the station, just hook a dvd player up to a VCR and you'd be good to go.)

Anyway, if you want to grow public awareness of disc golf AND give established players some great DG on TV, contact your station and find out what you'll need to do on your end. Then give me a shout and I'll get some DGL DVDs into your hands.

Good luck with your course proposal!

Joe
