It does suck that RI doesnt have many courses and I did read quite a bit of posts today about possible spots and whatnot.
Im just surprised no one has really posted much about making new Northern RI course.... Ok Roger Williams, Lincoln Woods, And Butterfly Farms, all sound like decent ideas that could be thrown together and id enjoy them to the fullest, but if I had to pick one spot it would have to be Slater Park...
People may present the idea that there is no space, but I beg to differ. This idea comes in out of the way where hopefully the course will not be touched or destroyed too much. My proposal is designing one that would run along the new bike path from Slater to the connecting Rumford baseball fields, don't have to be that big, but thats a lot of space to work with. Maximum borders that I see are already in space, from the Pawtucket / Seekonk line to the Runford fields, staying between the bike path and the East Providence / Seekonk rail system.
Parking within the park should not be a problem and since it is open until 9 PM on any given day which would also allow way more time rather then a 4:30 GATE time at Borderline (Which is currently my "Home Course") Also inside the East Providence Industrial Park at the far back is a decent strip of road that branches off the main road next to said train tracks and path which we could also see if permitted parking could be allowed.
I feel as though with the trees and slopes, along with the waterways and marshes, a killer course could be designed. With only people usually bent on exercise going back there (Since the slight demolition of the "Sugar Bowl" - Simply put: A place that kids and teens have ALREADY been kicked out of for partying and using offroad vehicles) and security going back there time to time, I dont think we would have much of a problem at all. Hopefully everyone would respect nature and clean up after themselves and others trash, and I think it could seriously work.
I happen to have volunteered at the Dagett Farm in Slater Park for 6 years in my teen years, and have become aqquainted with the people and some city workers around there quite well.. So I dont think it would be a problem if we ever needed to borrow shovels, tools, or anything else we might need to help this project along.
I currently have no idea who spear-heads course projects, NEFA, or how to even start going about all this, but I am willing to help in any way, shape, or form, not only to try and make more courses, but to help restore and refurbish current courses. (I LOVE THE MATS AT BORDERLINE! LMAO THANK YOU FOR ALL WHO DID THOSE). Feel free to send me in the right directions, offer additional ideas, or anything else you seem fit to want to contribute.
I am actually going to be designing somehow a practice regiment at the field directly next to me, Dagett Field, In Pawtucket. I will be working on field, slope, and wooded practice. I will be getting at least 1 basket personally so there will be an actual target within the next couple weeks. I invite anyone who may not be able to go all the way to MA or CT or Even Southern RI to come and enjoy the game with me when everything gets set up. The group I go with also is considering buying more baskets for practice also. I can also store them at my house if you dont wanna lug them around (5 houses from field... HOW EASY!) and maybe we can actually make a practice course sometime.
I thank you if you actually took the time to read this, and hope that I will be able to start my contributations to this wonderful sport with the help from everyone.
