Campgaw's "Winter Layout"

Post by Karl Molitoris »

Played a couple of rounds (while getting a guided tour by Doot of the winter layout) at Campgaw this past weekend. Howard, Brinster, et al. did a really nice job in taking the existing back-nine baskets and interspersing then among the front-nine holes. You can play a challenging (I'll take my second round +4 and be happy with it!) 18 hole course and only have to "climb" the mountain once. All holes are par 3's, probably varying from 150' to 400' but with all the trees that exist at The Camp (none of the open holes are available for winter use), a 400' treed par 3 is tough enough. Some of the front white holes are intact; others (of the front blues) are "split in two" and that summer's hole is utilized for 2 winter holes. A really nice usage of the existing land. Give it a try...but use ribbon if the snow's deep for you won't always be able to track your shots (due to some "blind" landing areas - at least blind from the tee you just shot from).

I definitely echo Carl's sentiments. Doot showed me the Campgaw winter layout on Saturday - it is awesome! With the rugged terrain and often inclement weather this time of year, a course with 18 par three holes is the perfect setup. As Carl indicated, they kept many of the pre-existing holes but also came up with some brand new ones. I especially liked how the regular par five fourth hole was broken into three holes, all of which play as tough par threes - no easy deuces there. Holes#3 and 10 are great because they help you to practice the blue tee drive on the regular Campgaw layout. In fact, you can still play the entire front nine blue tee layout of the regular Campgaw if you want to - that is awesome!

Definitely check out the Campgaw winter layout if you get a chance.
