Hush comes to shove
By Michael Graham
Thursday, January 14, 2010
Michael Graham hosts a talk show on 96.9 WTKK.
Is this Martha Coakley’s Shannon O’Brien moment?
In 2002, Democratic gubernatorial candidate O’Brien was still considered
the front-runner over Mitt Romney when she sat down for the final debate,
moderated by Tim Russert. When the debate was over, so was her campaign.
Her extremist answer to a question on abortion, and her flippant tone as
she talked about having a tattoo, combined to bury her. In that moment,
voters’ concerns about O’Brien (too liberal and not ready for the job)
were captured and galvanized.
On Tuesday, while Scott Brown was rumbling across Massachusetts in his
pickup, Martha Coakley jetted off to D.C. for a lobbyist-hosted
fundraiser. Nearly all the lobbyist hosts had ties to Big Pharma and other
health care business interests - highlighting Coakley’s support for an
Obamacare plan most voters oppose.
Politically speaking, that was bad.
Leaving the big-wig reception, Coakley stopped for a few press questions.
She happily answered the first, but when the Weekly Standard’s John
McCormack asked if she stood by her statement that there are no terrorists
in Afghanistan, Coakley looked at him like he was a servant girl caught
wearing Madam’s jewelry. Instead of answering, she looked around and said,
“I’m sorry, did anyone else have a question?”
Strike two.
As she walked away, the Weekly Standard reporter attempted to join the
press gaggle following in her wake. He was suddenly shoved into a fence by
Coakley campaign aide (and longtime Massachusetts Democratic operative)
Michael Meehan.
Meehan proceeded to block the reporter’s path, shoving him again and
again. Meehan demanded ID, which McCormack showed him, but when the
reporter asked Meehan who he worked for, Meehan answered, “I work for
myself.” The shoving continued until Coakley’s entourage was gone.
Oh, and did I mention all this happened . . . on videotape?
That’s why this might be a Shannon O’Brien moment. It’s a single incident
that reminds voters just why we are so angry.
First there’s the hobnobbing with lobbyists. It’s one thing for Coakley to
admit to The Boston Globe-Democrat that she has no plans to do retail
politics. (Standing outside Fenway Park [map]? In the cold? Shaking
hands?) It’s another for her to go to D.C. to pick up a sack of lobbyist
cash from the same Beltway types who gave us bank bailouts and Obamacare.
Then there’s her refusal to answer a simple question on Afghanistan. The
same day Coakley was denying there were terrorists in Afghanistan, word
came that three American soldiers were killed fighting them.
Was Coakley’s refusal to answer in D.C. an admission of incompetence or a
display of arrogance? Either way, it plays into the fears of many voters -
Democrats included - that Team Obama doesn’t know what the hell it’s
doing, but doesn’t want to hear any complaints about it either.
Which brings us to the shoving.
Watching that reporter get pushed again and again, I kept thinking of the
typical taxpayers I’ve talked to the past 12 months. From tax hikes on
Beacon Hill to backroom deals in health care in D.C., they feel ignored
and abused.
We speak out against higher spending, rising debt, fat bailouts, etc.,
etc., but our political class keeps shoving them down our throats. We show
up at a town hall or tea party to be heard, to try to get the political
class to respond, but what happens? We get insulted, dismissed, shoved
aside.
All the guy did was ask a question and the Coakley campaign pushed him to
the curb. How many Massachusetts voters watched that video and thought
“Pal, I know just how you feel”?
Coakley may not realize it, but we’re tired of being pushed around.
Tuesday is our chance to push back.

Who is helping the others career out more, Scott or Ayla Brown? I heard Ayla campainging for Scott on the radio and thought... what a stupid ad.
Then I saw her and said, what a stupid ad. She should be doing television ads, not radio ads.
Martha can now go back to being the sea hag that she. Nice move MA Democratic Party. Way to pull a Plaxico Buress.

A bunch of things happened to change the outcome, I think. She said she didn't want to hang out at Fenway in the cold to shake hands with (ugh) regular people. The miscue about Afghanistan having no more Taliban. Having her bodyguard push the reporter around as he was asking a couple questions. And to top it off, having Obama fly in to bail her out at Northeastern to me was the icing on the cake.
Especially when he (Obama) said he didn't know Scott Brown, nor did he know about his record. uhhhh, you're in this to win, you're the Commander in Chief, you should know SOMETHING about the 'enemy'.
The next time a million taxpayers show up in front of the White House with something to say, it's pretty important to, well, for lack of a better word, ...listen.
I think they'll be listening now.

Don't forget about the comment she made that maybe Catholic Drs should not work in the ER if their religion gets in the way of doing the job. Not a smart comment in a largely Catholic (and Christian) state. Doesn't she have handlers? Where the heck were they?

Let the healing BEGIN...yeah boy!
That's why he won, cause that's the best you can come up with. Dude's squeaky clean. Let's see, vs. Fells Acres, curling irons, and letting the illegal alien convenience store clerk walk after perving out on a 4 year old boy. And there weren't any controversies in the state legislature she could have investigated or prosecuted? Nah, they're part of the same machine.
Republican Scott Brown......Republican Scott Brown....Registered Republican Scott Brown
And I just heard Air America declared bankruptcy again....what a great week!
