I find it bizarre that the loose impediment penalty is invoked during a player's backswing? It's not like he moved the dead reeds with his hand or club before going into his swing. His club could have disturbed the dead reeds during the forward movement of his club during the swing which is defined as the "stroke" in BG rules. However, the backswing is not considered part of the "stroke" so touching the dead reeds in a hazard resulted in his 2-shot penalty.

I agree Chuck, seems kinda silly to me, but kudos to him for being an honorable man and taking his penalty.

I'm sure when he finally does win fair and square the victory will be that much sweeter.

It's done that way so as to eliminate all possibilities of "clearing a path for the downward strike onto the ball" as one is taking the club back.

It's akin to a dg player hippo-ing his butt into a bush behind him / around his lie to get behind the lie and 'give himself more throwing room' (which we know shouldn't be done but sometimes is kind of 'taken advantage of' anyway.

Nice guys finish last..or second I guess in this case.

Seems so trivial, but in the end the guy is sleeping at night easy.

If there is any rainbow for him, it's if in the future if he commits a violation of the rules and doesn't realize it, he will be believed.

I say kudo's to him for that.
