Current rating vs. Registration time etc.

Scenario: you are rated below the maximum rating allowed for a PDGA event in a ratings-protected division (MA2, MA3 etc), so you pre-register for an event that is 2 months away. During that 2 month period, you rating goes up over the maximum allowed.

Are you 'grandfathered' in, being pre-registered before the update, or are you forced to move up to the next division?

I believe that if your official rating update gets posted within 2 weeks of a tournament (no matter when you registered), then it is YOUR CHOICE to move up or not.

If the rating update is posted more than 2 weeks before the tournament, then you MUST play in the higher division.

Any of you seasoned or rule-savvy disc golfers can correct me if I'm wrong.

I ran into this last year (having no understanding of ratings and division requirements), and I got a lesson really quickly. I chose to play in a higher division, mostly due to peer pressure, but I had the option (so I was told) because the rating update had just occurred within 2 weeks of the tournament.

I think the PDGA ratings system is only 1 measure of ability, and we give it too much credence. However, being that it is probably the only common measure (even if imperfect), we have to use it in PDGA tourneys ... and it seems to work for most but not for some situations.

You CAN but that doesn't mean you SHOULD. Don't get me going again Abel.

Some divisions are rating protected, meaning you have to move up if your rating exceeds the level.

BTW... i'm not trying to kick anyone out of a division, just the opposite. A lot of upcoming events are NEFA/PDGA together, and if someone gets booted from a lower division because of PDGA rules, it might affect their NEFA standings or even the ability to qualify for finals... i want to play against the best guys this summer, and in the finals.

I'm guessing that that person(s) would have to play in the 'higher division' as mandated by the PDGA guidelines - with the NEFA points series taking a "back seat" for those (PDGA having precedence over NEFA). One of the "problems" with getting better .

I'd LOVE to be that 1050-rated player playing AM1 but I fear it's never going to be in the cards for me (just getting older too fast to make it up with additional skills obtained) .

From the PDGA "Ratings FAQ" page:

New ratings were just posted. Mine’s above a division that I pre-registered for. Now what?
If you have pre-registered, the TD may allow you to remain in that division as long as the event is within two weeks of the ratings posting date. If you did not pre-register before the new ratings were posted, then you are expected to play in the division where your new rating now resides.

As I recall:

These are suggested:
Novice (AM4) <850 (no minimum)
Rec (AM3) <900 (required for greater than 850)
Intermediate (AM2) <935 (required for greater than 900)

Advanced 935+ (required for greater than 935)

Open (open to ALL) but suggested minimum rating is 970

All amateur masters+ and juniors have NO ratings protection ... protection is age-based ...

you guy's got it all wrong. forget the rating it doesn't mean anything. my rating is 955 in pdga. it's funny cause i play like a 1000 rated player. But if you take ur rating and go play in west coast you'll get manhandle.
