sweet! by "landfill area" does that mean it will be pretty much a wide open area, or is it tucked back for some classic Cranbury woods play or a bit of a mix?
The "landfill area" is not part of Cranbury Park. In fact, you can see this property from I-95, between exits 15 & 16. This is going to be an "urban setting" course which will make it unique. The property itself is basically one very large mound (hill) with water surounding it on three sides and the highway on the other. There will be a lot of elevation but no trees. There is a foot bridge that connects the property to a parking lot. The couse will only be 9 holes. There is also a fishing pier connected to the property.
Now, before everyone gets too excited, the city has decided to put this course here because the property is not really useful for a park in the traditional sense and can't be used to make a soccer or baseball field. The property is near the Maritime Aquarium and is walking distance from a rural area. The idea is to introduce discgolf to a whole new population by making accessible to a high traffic area.
That said, the plan is still to make the course challenging and iteresting to the seasoned discgolfer. I've walked the property a few times but never with the mindset that it would become a discgolf course. So, I need to go back there (which I will do this week with the P&R director) to assess what might be the best way to layout a course.
The good news (and this is the best part) is that the city is going to pay for everything. And that decision has already been approved by all the necessary red tapers. I'm going to recommend concrete tee pads and a pro shop but we'll have to see what they say.
Great news Adam! The plan for the DG course sounds like it's a great way to reclaim land, and provide further recreational opportunities to the community. Certainly a challenging "9" for a seasoned disc golfer is a far better option than simply squeezing in additional holes if there isn't sufficient space...
Adam, I've also walked around this landfill area with the funny sculptures (I took a stroll from the maritime center). Funny b/c I was thinking that a dg course could work here...and I figured it was underused b/c of parking and "neighborhood" issues.
We've never met, but I live like 7 minutes from this area and would be interested in helping with the course design. Tim Smith and I have been working on getting disc golf to New Canaan. I have credentials if you need them, but I'm sure someone could back me up.
How soon does the park and rec committee want to act?
When do you plan on working on the design?
Also, what is planned for parking? Right now, the only reasonable parking that I know of is near that children's playground (next to the cemetary).
