Who wants to climb Mt. Washington?

Post by Nick Connell »

I am really interested in climbing Mt. Washington this year, as soon as is feasible (maybe as late as May), and I'll give it more thought in due time, with regard to when would be a good time to attempt ascent weather-wise. ( It's currently -25 C wind chill factor, with wind gusts of 82 mph.)

If anyone has Appalachian Mountain Club trail maps/guides (or anything related/similar) and wouldn't mind sharing with me, that would be excellent.

If anyone has climbed Mt. Washington and wants to talk, I'd be up for that.

Cheers!

Nick

Who wants to climb Mt. Washington?

Post by Matt Grayum »

This may sound funny but my mom is a really experienced hiker. She has climbed Mt Washington numerous times as well as many of the great and small peaks of new England and other spots around the country. I have climbed mt Washington but that was when I was like 13. Don't remember to much but I do know that experience is good especially if you are trying to go before May. If you want to ask questions to someone experienced I'm sure you could just message her on FB and tell her I sent you. Let me know if you want to I'll give you her name. She also has all trail maps and other journals and stuff from a lot of different trails and what you would experience different times of the year. Who knows we all might wanna plan a hike.

Having taken dozens of backpacking trips between 1987 and 2001 all over the Whites (I became addicted to remote bushwhack ponds rather than trail hikes) I can offer that, unless you REALLY like tough winter climbs, and are experienced and prepared, you are better holding off until early June...even a little later on Mt. Washington where there's often skiing until then. Especially if you are a novice or are planning "simply" a day hike, since you should prepare for Washington's worst in any month of the year. Even climbing 4000 footers, I sometimes ran into snow packed trails on Memorial Day weekends.

The "walk" up Washington via Tuckerman's Ravine is supposed to be one of the easier routes, although I've never gone up that way. The trail that starts up from the West near the Cog Rail Station (Ammonoosuc Ravine Trail) is not too bad (unless you're packin' 60 lbs. as I was). It's pretty much a busy "highway" that comes out of the forest near the Lakes of the Clouds hut, and then is another 1.5 miles of exposed rocky trail to the top...often in fog so thick it's hard to stay on the trail! There's a way to make that trip a big loop, but it would be a loooong, exhausting day. I overnighted in the hut's lower bunkroom ($5 then), went to the summit the next day, and then down the north headwall (in a raging ice storm in July) to camp in the Great Gulf. Next day it was up over Mt. Jefferson and out.

The Great Gulf is another spectacular way to come in, but it would be best to plan a multi-day camping trek. That time our family (see photo below of us climbing the headwall) hit 75mph winds and 50 degrees in pea soup at the top. Then, 1/2 hour later the fog blew away, the wind died down, it became a sunny 70 degrees...and I could see FOREVER!

The area is laced with SO many trails and has SO many possibilities that there is something for (almost) everybody's level of experience. Looking at one of your web site references that gives distances and time for popular options, just because you MIGHT be able to do the distance in the time listed doesn't mean you WANT to. I'd figure on at LEAST half again as much time to stop and gander at the scenery, take pictures, catch a bite to eat at the top and do a little sight seeing before starting back down in plenty of daylight. You DON'T want to travel some of those steep, rocky, rooty trails at night!. Keep the early adventures simple, fun... and safe!

And, send me a postcard. (Actually you CAN from the Mt. Washington Post Office.)

I just climbed Mt. Washington with my brother and father this past fall. We had possibly the best day to climb the mountain ever. Top of the mt. was like 32 and wind was 8 mph with not a cloud in the sky. The fall is one of the best times to go because of the colors and not as many hikers. If you are going with some able friends I would recommend climbers Tuckermans ravine. Tough hike but awesome! Check out my fb pictures, I got a bunch from the mt.

Nick - I've been up there a few times, 3 times snowbording tucks, once up Lions head route in the summer. I'll take a look for the topos etc. You can download anything you need from usgs website though.

If I go again it will be in April / May and I'll be bringing my snowboard.

Phil. Thanks for sharing. Your experience and stories resonate with other reading I've done. Let's meet up sometime, if you're able to/interested. I work in Hartford. PM me.

Thanks, Matt. I appreciate the offer.

Sounds good, Mike.

Awesome, MSerp. I'll probably take my wife with me, which would mean I will choose a moderate trail (although nothing is easy, as I read). I'll check out your pictures. What did you choose for a trail guide? Talk to you later.

Mt. Wash is one of two of the tallest peaks in NE that I have yet to climb.

Greylock has a great view if you've never climbed it.

Shawn's right...there are tons of other great hikes in the Whites that offer spectacular scenery and without the risks and bad weather that can sometimes spoil a Washington trip.

My favorite, and one I would heartily recommend, is a day hike up to the top of Mt. Carrigain. It's a beautiful trail, not too heavily-traveled, and the view from the old fire-watch tower at the summit is a SPECTACULAR 360 degree sweep of the Whites with the only human-built structures to be seen being a few buildings peeking out in the tiny hamlet of Bartlett and the barely visible buildings atop Mt. Washington on the distant horizon. I've seen it listed as arguable the best view in all the Whites and I concur. There are several trail options including a strenuous loop.

The Franconia and Bond ranges offer great choices, too. Oh, to be young again!

Monadnock is a great beginner climb for anyone looking to climb a real moutain (not wachusett like) and not kill themselves.

Phil's on it. One of my favorites is Mt. Lafayette from Franconia Notch. Right off 93, you can summit w/in a couple hours. 5200' great views of Cannon and Bond ranges. Shawn or anyone else: I'm looking to ski Tuckerman a couple times this year. Have done it three times--all in May. Would like to push it up to a little more wintery conditions. I've only been able to ski down the Sherburne trail once Post up if there's a plan in the works, and we can get some NEFA action on Old Baldy.

I believe Mt Marcy is in New York. I used to live on Shelburne Bay, in S. Burlington VT and I could see it to the west. It was like a perfect pyramid shape.

Want to see why I got addicted to bushwhack ponds? Here's a shot of Bear Pond, a great example of a beautiful little pond tucked away in a remote corner of the Whites that you can only reach by a bushwhack. The nearest trail (13 Falls Trail) is all the way down at the bottom of the Red Rock Brook valley...about 4 miles from the pond and 13 miles from the trail head on the Kancamagus Highway. When we arrived we found that this huge rock slide had occurred that spring, offering us a virtual stairway up to the ridge top where the Appalachian Trail connects South Twin and Mt. Guyot. You can wade across the shallow pond and large boulders just under the surface afford perfect perches on which to linger and cool off on a hot July day! We stayed 4 days and had many adventures including exploring the remains of a 100-year old logging camp 1/2 way up the valley.

Its been about a year since the last time i've climbed it, but if i remeber correctly the jewel trail starts at the visitors center and is a fairly easy, gentle trail.

wowowow.
haven't done any hiking/peak bagging in the whites...looks like that's gonna be changing this year.

to be honest, i'd take a day on the trail over DG any day. anyone who wants to hit the trails for day hikes, or multiple day backpacks are invited to call on me.

thx for the talk and pics. just the inspiration i needed to hit up NH this spring.
