Groove or Wraith?

I lost my Groove a few weeks ago and I'm thinking about buying a new one. It wasn't my favorite but i hadn't really broken it in. What do people think about the Wraith?

Wraith is one of my favorite new discs. Very over stable, so it is great in a head wind, and it is the first disc that I have been able to flick consistently well. I HATE the groove! but to each their own

I have both in the bag but the seasoned Champ Wraith is my go to driver. The Groove is still in the experiment phase...... I expected it to hyzer flip similar to the Monarch(only more D) but i have to but much more steam on it to get close to that flight path.

wraith, not even a question for me personally. the groove quickly earned a place OUT of my bag after I was over the puppy love stages... far too inconsistent a flight for me, I never knew if I was going to get a flat flight out of it, S turn, or hyzer the whole way with the slightest deviations in how I would throw it / wind direction / planetary alignments.

Wraith, for sure. More consistent and reliable. Work your way up to the heavy weight I think. It took me a while to finally learn to throw better and in turn throw Wraith well. It was well worth it. Then I moved up to Destroyer this year.

I consider Groove and Katana (except Champ) to be trick discs. I wouldn't advise throwing them until one has more control.

Wraith gets my vote.

wraiths will beat in very differently in different plastics ...

pro starts out over stable, but will beat in to understable very easily and then stay consistent
star beats in slower keeping its stability longer
champ beats in the slowest, but will remain the most consistent and controllable over a longer period of time

never liked the feel of the DX - something to do with the rim edge ... just never liked the grip, always felt like the rim was cutting into my hand ...

On big wide open crushes, my wraiths were getting outdriven by Discraft's ESP Nuke, so I've made the switch to Nukes on holes where I need maximum distance. I've thrown a Boss, Groove, and Katana, and the Nuke is by far the easiest of the HUGE RIM drivers to get a good consistent throw with.

I'll be the one on his own who highly prefers the Groove to the Wraith. However it's because of bad timing that the Wraith has never worked out for me, while the Groove came in at the right time.

When I first started I got a Champ Wraith and it was way too much disc for me so I sold it. Hated on the Wraith for some time (didn't know much back then about flight ratings...etc). Then I became able to throw 300+ and found some Pro Wraith X-outs on sale so I gave it another shot knowing I could probably throw it fine. For a few weeks it was great, but then the Pro plastic beat in and is just a junk hyzer flip disc now. Thing sits in my trunk collecting dust as I have plenty of hyzer flip discs.

Then as I was getting better at throwing last year I tried a Groove and had real good luck with it so I stuck with it. The champ plastic beat in ever so slightly and it now is a bullet. Thrown flat, maybe a few degrees hyzer, it darts out of the hand, turns a little, and fades back. But it goes forever and on open holes, you can usually deal with the fade/skip. One of two discs I've been able to clear the 360' fence where I practice driving.

However, lately I've been neglecting all other drivers as a Buzz/Stalker combo is really improving my scores. Screw trying to throw your shoulder out pushing 400', when a Buzz/Stalker combo can push 280/330 dead straight.

It seems like there's a new model of disc every week these days, and I'm starting to wonder just how different they (Overstable Distance Drivers) really all are.

Wraith hands down. I have 10 in various stages of wear/weights in case I lose one

What an uninformed opinion. Threw the Groove today on several "Wraith" shots, and well, I liked it. I'm going to keep throwing it in practice rounds.

I threw a couple first runs a lot right when they came out. Overall consistency got me away from the groove, exactly what DmC is talking about. Sometimes she flips and sometimes she stables out. This would have been ok if it was a longer disc, but it's no longer than a wraith or destroyer

I ended up getting a wraith and love the thing. Def turned into one of my most used drivers. Thing goes straight as an arrow when flicked, easy to control, and the best part is it doesn't have a goofy indented rim.

It's a very inconsistent, touchy mold. No two are alike, and even a 'good' one is tough to throw perfectly. Generally considered one of the worst discs to be released in the last few years.

The wraith, however, has become my main distance driver. I used teebirds almost exclusively for the last year, as anything faster with a wider rim just didn't go as far and had much less accuracy. After getting the teebird to where i was super comfortable with it, hitting fairways in the 280-320 range consistently, I tried out a bunch of speed 9 discs (valk, PD, etc)... again, no major difference in distance. Max speed discs were still too much, so I tried a Wraith and i'm really digging it. Bombs with good grip and control. I use a DX for open shots and pro wraiths for more stability or woods.

Wow, this thread makes me laugh. Not in a "you're all dumb" way, but more of a generally surprised way. I personally LOVED my Groove last year before I lost it. It was 100% my long distance TeeBird and was predictable on every shot. Anytime I got to an open field it was my go-to bomber. Handled wind very well, and always knew what it would do for me.

Once I lost it I went to the Halo which I found to be very similar in flight and the rim dimensions felt about the same as well. But I lost that too

Because of this thread, I went out and bought a Wraith. I've only had 2 Wraiths in the past, same weight. One was a Champion when I first started playing and couldn't do a damn thing with it as my form blew and was too stable, and then later on when I could throw much better I bought a Pro which was just the opposite... the most flippy thing imaginable. That's why I never was a fan. But I will experiment with the Star version I just got. Hopefully doesn't break in too much like the Pro.

If it doesn't work out, then I will be going back to the Groove or Halo... probably the Groove as it sounds like from this thread there will be plenty for me to choose from at the shops

Neither one of them ever worked for me. I like Orion LFs for "wraithy" shots and nukes or destroyers for other d lines.

Grooves can fly quite a ways but are really really touchy IMO, never the same flight.

Wraiths are amazing. Consistent flying disc that can be crushed as well. I need to get my champ wraith back from amesbury.

As always, it is nice to hear other opinions, but the one that matters most is your own. I haven't bought a Groove yet, but I really like the way the rim feels for a flicker on the tee box.

Groove or Wraith?

Halo Pro Wraiths are still the best wraiths for flying, but they beat in too quickly. Personally I just haven't had as good experiences with the Star or Champ flavors. The Groove is WAY too inconsistent, but it's a tempting disc to throw because when you DO nut it, it's sooooo nice.

The Halo gets you fast disc speed, it gets you a controllable release, and it has the most predictable finish I've seen from a disc since the original flat-top Orcs. Win all around and you always know what it's going to do when you throw it.

Flat top mint green echo star wraith, they hold their high speed stability well, I had a copper pop top that was a straight Anny disc. Grooves are junk. Should mention those echo* are pre-production. But dome height will determine HSS imo

I agree that the Halo is a killer disc. Just always thought the same of my Groove as well. When I lost the Groove, the Halo fit in my bag perfectly in its place and did the exact same thing.

Finally threw my new Star Wraith in a field last night. I must say it was nice "out of the box" as it barely turned which means it will probably beat in a little and have that true -1 turn for me. But it wasn't the longest new driver I threw last night... that's for another thread in Equipment talk
