Campgaw Mountain Reservation, Mahwah NJ

Post by Scott Howard »

The Mighty Gaw layout is in the ground at Campgaw Mountain Reservation in Mahwah, NJ. This course is only 20 minutes from the Tappan Zee Bridge and if anybody can get the chance to play this course, come on down. The pro tees play around par 69, the am tees are playing at a par 57. Hole 18 is a 1400’ downhill par 5 that plays from the top of the mountain down to the lodge. The fairway is about 300’ wide all the way! Hole 15 is a 640’ downhill ace run! The course will be in the ground until mid November so play it while you can. There should be a doubles event there in early November. Email me for a course map. discgolfnj@hotmail.com

It was my understanding that due to environmental concerns, the county has not mowed the grass on the ski slope - has this changed?

Yes, this has changed. Mighty Gaw will not be in the ground if the conditions do not permit. The hill is mowed and will hopefully be mowed again in October. Course map is now up .

The Mighty Gaw is back in the ground for the month of May. If anybody has the chance to come down to north Jersey to play this place, I promise you will not be let down. Be sure to print out a course map here.

Whats the status with this place and that gate. Last time I was out there in the winter the gate was closed and we didn't feel like making the hike up the hill. Is it usually closed? or opened on certain days? Thanks for any help

The gate and course is open year round. Gate closing times vary in accordance to sun set and the ski hill hours. I think the closing time is posted at 7PM right now. With the ski hill operation winding down, gate closing times vary due to what they are doing up there. The ski hill will probably stay open until the end of March. During that time, the gate stays open until 10 PM i think for night skiing.

Wow, a year almost to the date - Oct 5 vs 7.
It's hard to believe this epic course is the closest to NYC!
If you haven't played the Might Gaw layout, you [bleep].

We are planning a dubs event for Sunday Nov. 1st, the day after Halloween. But the club still needs to work out some details.

The baskets are being moved this evening to the Mighty Gaw layout. The hill has dried up nicely and the course should in prime condition for the next month. Play it if you get the chance.

The Mighty Gaw has been pulled for the winter ski season. The 18 hole Campgaw layout is in for the rest of the winter and quite pososibly, for ever. We have a fund raiser going and we should have enough $ to get 8 more baskets before spring. This will allow us to have the short Campgaw Layout playable year round, and the Mighty Layout in the ground from Spring to early winter.

Scoward and campy crew: Whats the status of the gaw? I know there is a lot of snow... anyone know whether the pads have been touched? I am hoping to play Friday AM. Will be my first gaw in a year. I dont mind bringing a shovel if necessary.

On the other hand, does it seem like FDR might have less snow? Trying to get a handle on the best NYC-centric option for Friday. Input appreciated.

Just found this post,

How did Gaw look? I haven't had a chance to get out there lately. Snow around here is like 4" of frozen skippy crust right now.

We are getting real close to having 8 more baskets installed at Campgaw. This will allow the shorter Campgaw layout to be open for play 365 days a year. Here is a flyer explaining the changes that are coming up.
