Crane Hill Hill Evolves!

Post by Davis Johnson »

Hole 13 at Crane Hill will soon be combined with Hole 14 to make a long, challenging dogleg left fairway. Your reward for surviving this will be a new, short ace run across the ravine, Hole 14. Several of us this week cleared the hole and poured the cement for the new hole placement. Remaining to be done: some additional clearing of modified Hole 13 to allow for opened up avenues to the new pin.

Our neighborhood mower has unfortunately, soured on the job for reasons not quite clear. So the field is high in all its glory, and discs play "where's Waldo? We are trying to figure out other mowing arrangements. If anyone has a mower and some volunteer incentive, it would be much appreciated!

Played the new changes yesterday, I didn't know about them and I thought someone had stolen the basket until I saw the path to the ravine hole. Very nice, love the challenge!

Oh yeah, I shot a +3. I don't remember if any holes were par 4, so I counted everything a 3.

I believe that 16 is a par 4. Maybe the new 13 is also a par 4?
Sometimes I wonder, "Why is that disc getting bigger?". Then it hits me.

You are right. It plays par 56 now with 13 and 16 both as par 4s.

Just an off-beat question 8-) , how often is 15 deuced?
And an even more off-beat question 8-) 8-) , besides a roller ramping up and in anyone think this hole could be aced?

I play Crane often, and I kid you not Karl, I ask myself these same questions every time I play it. In my very limited disc golf opinion, it's a poorly designed hole. Others will disagree, but it is a bad par 3 hole, but it is an equally bad par 4 hole. I have hit the front of the basket once for a deuce from about 80 feet, and am beginning to have more looks from 50 - 60 feet, but to get in reasonable putting range on the drive takes a perfect shot. I'd love to see it sometime. An Ace? I doubt it will ever be aced. This is a hole I would love to see a pro play because I might have a different opinion. I think it's the hardest hole at Crane Hill.

I would love to see the pin be pushed back about 70 more feet and made into a par 4. Not too sure on how much more room is around there to play with pin placement, but it would allow for better play.

Granted it is a hard par 3, but with a well placed drive, and then a solid approach, you are sitting right under the basket. If you have a flick for a right handed player, the hole isn't too crazy.

I have only heard of one person getting a birdie on that hole and i know that an ace there is near impossible.

perfect the back hand roller and you'll have your putts for duece,... that's about it... toughest par on the course

Imo, it's perfectly acceptable to have holes that challenge you to make par rather than birdie

Btw, i here two tee pads are installed already.. keep up the good work at crane

Hole 15 begs for a sidearm from a righty. With a half decent one, 3's become pretty routine. I can see the merits of a RH backhand roller too-- that is if the groundskeeper has been by. Right now, the course has two official par 4's; 13 and 16.

And yes, Hole 1 has a brand new permanent tee, thanks to the work of a bunch of volunteers under Chris' expert engineering and direction. I've been away ever since so not sure of what further progress, but have a sneaking suspicion 18 might now have a new tee too.

The rest of the tees will be installed in due course. The main change will be to move the tee back for Hole 4 to get it on level ground
and get it away from the cart path.

Crane Hill, thanks to the hard work of many while I was gone, now has beautiful permanent tees on four holes: 1, 18, 15 and 16. Base material has been distributed to the rest of the holes in preparation for tee installation on them too. Thanks to all who have helped!

Is the big tree on the left of the opening on hole 13 a mando? The one with caution tape. If so, maybe someone could make a "M"ando sign to clearly mark it. Caution tape doesn't really do the trick.

Laforce and I shot a course record -11 in doubles the other day. Playing hole 13 as a mando.

This was done several times at league this year... Kelly did it with more than one partner. Great round, but just wanted to be clear that this isn't a new doubles record.

Any non-productive citizens, unemployed and/or social loafers are encouraged to attend....

The first workday will be held on Thursday the 19th....8 am start....

Thanks to the hard work of some devoted folks Crane Hill got a pretty big cleanup today....

-Lots of wood was bucked down and moved off the fairways...
-Piles that were made adjacent to the fairway during the first cleanup attempt were moved further into the woods...
-Some "snappers" or "hangers" were pulled out of trees...
-Drop zone on hole 11 cleared
-Walking path from 15 to 16 (the one no one uses, behind 13's tee) was cleaned up...

There are still some widow makers out there and a few piles that could be dragged a little further away, but we are
one step closer to having the course tournament ready. Hopefully February 4th ends up being a great day, with good disc golf and a lot of good things done for charity....

Thanks to those who came out in the frigid cold today to work their asses off....Steve Merrill, Mike Keilb, Tom Silva, Jeff Avis and the two guys from the Town P&R Dept. Tom and Dominic....and last but not least Jesse C. You are the man....you do the work of three normal people...

It looks like the weather is going to make for a challenging workday on Saturday, so it looks like it will be postponed....I'll make a final decision tomorrow....

I will refrain from voicing my opinion on the two other things I saw out there today that almost made this a bad day. In the end it was hard to stay mad at the actions of a couple after seeing the production that the rest of us accomplished....

But....Don't you HATE stepping in dog poop?....especially on the disc golf course....I will say no more....
