Crane Hill Storm Damage

Post by Davis Johnson »

Crane Hill, like I'm sure many of our other beloved links, has suffered significant damage from the recent storm. Luckily, none of the baskets have been affected. The tee pads all seem o.k. too, though 9 and 13 are covered with tree limbs and a tree, respectively. The fairways are littered with large branches. The ones adjacent to the field suffered worst. 12 in particular is a shambles of branches and shattered trunks; 3 is not much better off.

So, chainsaw deployment is going to be in order. There are tentative plans to get a crew out there this Saturday if any of you reading this can assist. Chainsaws would be good, but axes and regular saws can certainly be utilized to work on the smaller stuff which is the majority of stuff littering the fairways. Anyone with tree climbing experience/equipment would be very helpful too because of all the hanging boughs.

Playing wise, one of the early guardian trees is gone on 5, so that'll be a less challenging drive. I'm not sure how 12 is going to look once everything gets cleared, but it's probably going to be a lot easier, and we may want to consider a change of hole placement. 16 is a very interesting case of the trees along the narrow alley to the field, all bent over forming a tight tunnel to go through. There may be a better opportunity to throw over as a result. The bent over trees are likely to straighten back up considerably with time, so that tee shot is going to be an evolving one!

Good luck, Dave. I'll be dealing with our own stuff this weekend. I'm sure Crane will be back in shape soon. And hey -- I'll take easier holes any day. Don't bother trying to make them harder! :P

Jay, instead of posting 30 links I just posted the one to hole 1 and you have to advance to each hole and view the pics on your own after that.

So how is the course cleanup coming ?

I have been busy working on cleanup of my home course (Tolland) as well. We are playing well.

I'm interested in playing up at Crane soon. What is the forecast ?

I played yesterday and it looked great. You can see the damage off to the side. Some big trees still are in the way of the paths to the next holes.

Was out there Saturday and there were still some overhead widow makers on the course. Aside from the damage, it was the first time there and we(5 from albany) realy liked the course.

Some good news regarding Crane Hill: First, Chris and company have completed a great job of installing all the tees. It's a real treat to tee off on all the holes with those good gripping pads.

Secondly, thanks to the contributions of many-- chainsawing, dragging, etc., the course is again very playable. There's still plenty to be done, especially in the area of Holes 12 and 13, but it is amazing how much rehab has been accomplished in the wake of the epic October snows.

Next to come: tee signs and directional arrows.
