Re: Best Valued durable disc grabbing basket
Just a sleeve.... the lock thru the basket pipe and sleeve controls the overall height of the basket from the ground.
Keep it simple.

Drill the hole for the locking pin before you cement the sleeve in the ground.

Re: Best Valued durable disc grabbing basket
I have 2 DB5's, both have been outdoors for over 5 years and no sign of rust.
On both baskets the circle at the base of the stand broke off from the legs, but both were easily fixed with 3 U-bolts.
The stand comes off without altering the height for permanent installations.

Re: Best Valued durable disc grabbing basket
I can't believe I overlooked this, so I'm going to quote Cookie Monster twice for importance...
The DB-5 IS a portable basket, albeit it probably weighs about 75lbs. The basket is 5 parts - Base, Bottom Pole, Top Pole, Basket, Chain Assembly. These are all held together by thumbscrews. Even if you scrap the base and sleeve-install the DB-5, anyone can come by and unscrew the Chain Assembly, the Top Pole, and the Basket... about 90% of the overall assembly. Then they take it and get their own lower pole and next thing you know a theif has a new basket, and you have a nicely mounted pole and no basket. Creative means to secure ALL pieces/connections so that they are theft proof is a MUST for this basket to go into a course.
Another alteration necessary to safely secure the DB-5s is that you need to replace the thumbscrews that hold all the pieces together.

Mine broke off too from rolling around in the back of a pick up when I was too lasy to take it apart. I brought it down to a machine shop down the road from my house. I had to take it here the name of the shop is buzzz's machine shop. LOL $20 all fixed and he reenforced a couple of the bars on top where the welds had split.

and how much is upgraded hardware for locking nuts? would you still want nuts to be removable just more secured locked or would they be perma fused ? if that makes sense?

three sets of carraige bolts and nuts..... few bucks per basket plus drilling thru the pipe because the threaded thumbscrew hole only goes thru one side of the pipe.
I'll try to get some close up pics today while i'm out there.

JW TY..def post when/if ya remember please
also through face to face discussion as of late through the region as I have been here there and everywhere discussions have arose..It started when I was scouting some potential land on the mohawk trail and seen a blacksmith shop...with a sign that said we can fabricate anything!..and some other mumbo jumbo...so then I was talking to Ranger Billmer local tully vet and neighbor of mine..his grand parents own an "old black smithing/metal fab" plant in town and our currently trying to get as a historical landmark and have it back in operation..looking for local area projects...and someone else that owns an area shop has also expressed some interest
that said...and ya may see where I am going already
has/was/is there any place in NE that has/tried to design a PDGA approved basket for DG?
If not realistically what would be the PDGA approval process....lets leave the business side out as I understand the patent, ect ect logistics would have to be determined/completed ect ect...
There must be a way to design a durable NE terrain/realistic installation basket that could someday be approved by PDGA or another sanctioning body of DG(obv pdga would be ideal and may be only//although PDGA could give sanctioning as it would be more relative to NE anyways and we are not talking A tier courses)!~
Could always design/fabricate to specs for PDGA approval...get em out to courses and hope they get approved..if not hey we have semi legal baskets in ground that are sweeet
I am sure the cost could be cut down a lil having some regional connection/relationship..and who knows maybe some innovative design that can save cost can be found..IDK
Maybe the steel would even come from America..(I doubt but at least it would be made in USA)
I will continue to explore this just kinda wondering what the pdga end would be..I will pm chuck link to thread
discuss?

No problem designing a new target and getting it PDGA approved. Follow the published specs, produce a model and ship to Jeff Homburg along with $350 fee.

Re: Best Valued durable disc grabbing basket
I have an idea for the anchoring system as Billmer and I discussed how the army core anchors poles/ect for projects..seems digging deep enough for sleeves is main issue in most NE spots...
well anyways I will keep doing some research here and see what kind of ideas/partnerships arise
just seems right

produce a model and ship
does "model" mean a finished product? or design as in software/paper?
and ship would then mean entire basket if that is what model means?

Re: Best Valued durable disc grabbing basket
Yes. You ship your completed version, not a prototype. Presumably you build a few protos, test them out, finalize your design, make your first production models then send one of them for approval.
You can always safely submit your design drawings with dimensions to Homburg in advance if you think there are issues you'd like to have the Tech Standards group check out before building.

yeah many "new basket" companies..with little to know support/info via web, phone or anything
the arachnid seems to be up to date and functional
I can't wait till I can align all the resources I need for a potential future basket adventure!..I know over the next decade I will be needing many baskets anyways..as the johnny apple seed trail will evolve to the DG Trail!

Hey guys,
My name is Kyle Hughes Co-Founder of Arroyo Disc Sports and one of the designers of the Vortex Basket (on the left side of the basket in the photo). Over the past couple months we have been doing a couple design tweaks and quality control tests in order to ensure the best possible product. It has taken longer than we had originally anticipated but I would just like to thank everyone for being patient with us through this process. We are a young company with big plans to grow the sport for the future and are eager for everyone to try out the new basket. 2012 will be a big year for us so please keep an eye out and spread the word about Arroyo Disc Sports.
Please check out our website www.arroyodiscsports.com for more information about the Vortex.

I know the PDGA changed a spec requirement on them. In accordance with the No Wedgie rule that started last year, they wanted the grid spacing on the tray to be tighter to make wedgies much less likely to begin with. So ADS had to change that to get approved for Championship Level Play.

Re: Best Valued durable disc grabbing basket
To be clear, the spec requirement to reduce the size of gaps on Championship baskets had been established in January 2009 more than two years before they submitted their first target model for approval. They then decided they wanted to meet the Championship target specs and went back to tighten up the gaps to meet it. The PDGA (Tech Standards) did not change the specs on them in the middle of their approval process.

Re: Best Valued durable disc grabbing basket
I contacted them for 50 Vortex baskets and he quoted me list!
No break on 50!
They look like nice baskets but not at $360 each for 50 with a practice basket at NC.
Hopefully the get their costs down a little.
