Innova MAMBA

Post by Dave Jackson »

We just got a bunch of this new Innova driver called the MAMBA.

I was told it flies like a well worn Wraith.

They are champion plastic and ultra sexy.

What do players think of it???

the archon was supposed to be a well worn Wraith- which i think it is (the champ archon is a decent disc)- i'd love to borrow a Mamba and see how it goes, but what's the deal with coming out with two 11 speed slightly flippy drivers in under a year?

INNOVA RANT GOES HERE: bla bla bla big business or something

anyway, still can't help being curious!

slightly flippy?

-5 on Innova's scale, that's damn near a boomerang. might be fun to roll though.

I had a couple players this weekend tell me they love it. They were players that throw less than 300' with a backhand toss, so I figured it's under stability would lend itself to more D.
And it did.....

Come up to Maple Hill and try one out...

I tested a stack of 150g Mambas yesterday. Very flippy, kinda like a longer Roadrunner with little/no fade. Reminded me of a Roadrunner/Monarch progeny. Not warp speed, but faster than a RR. I bombed a couple of HUGE accidental rollers before I realized the amount of hyzer necessary to get this thing to fly.
Cheers & chings!

Players with lower arm speed are raving about this disc giving them extra distance they had previously not seen before in their drives...

Just got it Yesterday and went to hamp with it.. I have to agree with that. I am not a big thrower/arm and I definitely get more distance with the MAMBA... Love it....

Terrible name, though. Makes me think of fruit hats and lime green dance skirts.

I was at the Clearwater disc golf store while on vacation and was introduced to the Mamba. The store dude said he sold one the other day and the guy hit a $500 Ace at Cliff. I said that is the disc for me and bought one.

I didn't bring a lot of disc to Florida with me so I was throwing the Mamba quiet a bit. I was at Water tower HC league and mentioned that this looks like a Mamba hole. A guy in my group said he just bought a Mamba and hit a $500 Ace with it at Cliff. Small world. I told him he was my inspiration for buying one. I was throwing it so well and so much that my group started teasing me, calling each hole a mamba hole. I am a true convert to the church of Mamba.

As a relative newcomer to the sport of disc golf (1 1/2 years) what exactly is a "Mamba" hole? Is it similar to Wickham Holes 1,7,8,11,12,17 and 18 or Page Park Holes 6,7 and 14? For those holes, I generally throw (RHBH) a 157g Blizzard Katana. I'm on the fence about getting the Mamba but don't want to get another disc just for the sake of getting a new disc. I mainly play Wick, Page, Tolland and Panthorn in CT and Pyramid, Maple and Newton Hills in MA. Definitely looking forward to playing different courses.

I can't throw this thing at 20% on an inverted hyzer without rolling it at about 200'

That said, it's a good turnover/roller off the shelf. I can't even imagine this thing will be any better than a paper plate after a beating, tho.

Mamba hole is any hole that is straight/narrow (atleast for my throwing style)

Wickham holes that I use it on:
hole 3,13

Page park

sometimes hole 2,4 and 5
always on hole 10

Panthorn

sometimes hole 1,5,9,14
always hole 3

Or any new course that I am playing and want something to go staight without any left or right fade at the end of the flight.

If you have a strong throwing style or a lot of wrist snap, this might not be the disc for you. I have good luck with using it as a control smooth backhand disc. If I try and crank it (like throwing Wick hole 1) or flick it, the results are not ideal.

it IS flippy- but it's faster than a paper plate
i don't leave it in my bag often, but when i do i use it on stand still trouble shots
i.e. when i hit an early tree on a par 3 and want to throw 285 feet from a standstill
with the Mamba it's possible-

that being said, i pulled it out of my bag and used it very unsuccessfully last time i played Newton Hill- it turned me off from it for the time being, i'm better off throwing a short and straight shot
at least 4 times i tried it on uphill shots thinking it was going to work for me, but i don't throw wider rimmed drivers accurately at all and it does turn over very easy.

I've been experimenting with it for thumbers/tomahawks....it rotates really fast, making it useful for uphill shots, and other times when you want it to turn quicker than an overstable disc will.

i love that with domey discs- the rotation with a tomahawk. you can hit a window and then it'll pancake flat for you perfect (so long as you don't put too much height on it). it's especially useful when you're on a steep hill and want to make a run at the basket without blowing past it. pye brook has four or five of these holes-
