Burgess Park - Cape Cod Disc Golf Club

Post by Steve Solbo »

Figured I'd start a thread to keep everyone updated on the progress we've been making as a club and as a course.

Ever since Greenleaf Garrison got into town and lit a fire under our collective asses, the club and park have been benefitting like never before. So, if you haven't gotten a change to meet GG, you should, super nice guy and a real motivator/innovator, oh yeah, plus he makes his own killer homebrews.

Anyways, since the inception of the CCDGC, we have sold 30 membership tags each for $20, which all proceeds have gone towards the course, we've also got an EIN number and are in the process of becoming a Non-Profit organization.

The first thing we did was hold a work day, chip piles/stacks of downed wood that had likely been building up for 7 years, moved 3 holes, cleared PI, Briars and other nuisance vegetation.

We'll be holding a Kids Camp from 9-2 on 8/13 (Rain Date 8/14). With lessons from the local Pro's, a 9 hole tourney for the kids, swimming and lunch (provided for the club), parents are encouraged to participate, but don't have to. Small donation to the club ($5-10) per child is appreciated all

7/29-7/30 we'll be holding a work weekend where we'll be working on our tee boxes that need stablization, flattening and just downright maintenance on tee boxes and further course maintenance.

9/25 The club will be scouting Shawme Crowell Park in Sandwich, for a temp course, that could be the venue for a tournament later in October.

10/29 We are planning to hold an Ace Race, I really need to gauge interest for this, Burgess is the perfect course for an Ace Race and likely will be the only one located in Southeast Massachusetts. Tenatively scheduled in Late October, tenatively schedule to possibly have a Halloween theme, twist to it.

Other things in motion... Dry Fit Tee Shirt Design Contest, designs are being submitted via email to capecoddiscgolf@gmail.com deadline is the 31st of July, the club members will vote on the design at league on August 2nd. If anyone out there is talented and has spent time on Cape Cod or loves the cape, we'd love to see your artwork.

Todd is running a 50/50 raffle on behalf of the club. Half the proceeds will go to the winner, the other half will go to the Club. Tickets are $1 for 1. $5 for 8. $10 for 20. We have yet to decide how/if we'll sell tickets over the internet. A good way to earn some cash and support the club at the same time. Tickets go on sale today at league and will be on sale until we pull the winners at the end of the summer, we'll keep a running total for those who would like to donate, date of raffle, TBD.

Dri-Fit shirts. Our first order of shirts will be pre-pay only, we plan on using a dri-fit comfortable model tee shirt, similar to the Dynamic Discs, Huk Lab, etc... Price to be determined after design is chosen.

Anyone that is interested in our on-goings, please check out our facebook page, Cape Cod Disc Golf Club, thanks for looking!

Steve,

Isn't is cool how just a little something is all it takes to bring it to the next level. While I've never been to the CC dg scene, your semi-isolationism made it almost a goal of mine to "get there"...but as yet have. Now that spark has maybe glued the forces (that I'm sure were always there) together into a unit. Excellent. You, the other dg'ers, the community, and all future dg'ers will benefit from this newly-found enthusiasm. Can't wait to come out there someday.

The ONLY reason any of this was possible is because of the great group of people that have been at Burgess WAY before I was there. There are many dedicated members of our club......and it shows. I am proud to be a part of it.

You're entirely too humble Greenleaf  I love how things are truly coming together and I can certainly foresee many good things in the future as a result of the formation of this club. Job well done sir! Also, count me in for Burgess B team...yeah boy!

Jim, we have a Tuesday Handicapped league, it's $5 to play with a $1 optional ace pot, I believe we have atleast 2 separate that are capped at $100, otherwise, I would go out there around 5ish... look for a person with a bag and it usually will end up being one of our established players.

Grab a roc/buzz from your team member and you will be good to go IMO. Maybe a teebird or overstable disc too but that wouldnt be needed on many holes so you could just use one of his too for that shot

Andy's right, I only throw a driver (teebird, which Aubin has about 20 of in his bag  ) on 2 holes and a mid on 4, the rest are all putter drives.

FYI, in case you don't run into a helpful local (and that's just about impossible):

- To get from hole 3 to hole 4, backtrack halfway down 3's fairway and bang a right to 4's teepad up the path.
- Hole 9 tee pad is to the left of hole 8's basket...back in woods (concrete tee pad)..9's basket is the one on the far left side of field (400 + ft). You can switch up and shoot for practice basket in middle of field if you want on hole 9
- There is an alternate long tee area for hole 10 back by the far corner of the field near Burgess House right near the large oak tree (its marked by two white flags)
- Hole 18's basket is down the field past red tee markers on the right in woods

Holes 6 and 13 have 2 baskets on each All holes have two long (blue) tee pads except 2, 6, 9, 13 and 18

Other than this, the course is pretty straightforward...enjoy!

thanks andrew, wish i read that before i left

real fun play on a nice course. the #4 hole location got us a little turned around, but did find a helpful local. i was surprised to see has many people on course as there was. at least a group on almost every tee. we don't see that much traffic at panthorn.

thanks again!

Glad you enjoyed the course...my post was rather last minute so I totally understand that you didn't see it in time
Burgess is quite crowded...especially in the mid-late afternoon when it really fills up. Best time to play is early a.m. to mid afternoon....the earlier you get there, the more of the course you'll have to yourself.

Played Burgess for the first time in a long time (3 months?). The place looks great!! New tee pads, clean fairways and the basket changes on 5 and 11 are sweet. Good job to everyone who pitched in. The pricker bush rough is even beat back and is getting clean. Keep up the good work. A course that receives love will be loved. :D

Just an FY(F)I you'd have better luck contacting us on the Facebook page. Not too many people check the Nefa forum that are regulars at Burgess. They'd rather be playing disc than talking about it. Weirdos if you ask me!
