High Top Suggestion

Post by Ben DAmore »

Looking for a good pair of high tops to play in. Badly twisted my ankle for the second time in a month while walking (both times on relatively flat paths). Need something to support my weak ankles!

My Garmont high tops are gore tex and offer great stability in a lightweight shoe.
I think they are about 150 bux.

Ben, i've got ankle problems too including tendonitous in my achilles and previously torn ligaments that took months in PT to heal/strenthen. I avoid using high tops whenever possible however. I am a hiker and backpacker too, and only put on my high top boots when I'm either carrying a full (30+ lb) pack for many miles or know I'm going to be on very uneven/unstable terrain. I find i am far more nimble in low tops which IMHO reduces the risk of injury. Also, high tops are notably heavier which increases fatigue potentially leading to mis-steps. What i do is wear a neoprene support (Mueller, ~$7 at WalMart, etc) that serves two purposes, it offers just enough support to prevent many ankle rolls and, since it is made of neoprene, heats the area, bringing blood to the injury aiding in healing.
Of course, this is just what works for me, but I though I'd share my experiences in case it might be of some benefit. If you do decide to go with high tops, pay attention to the weight and try and get some that aren't considerably heavier than lows.
Good luck with that ankle.

I ended up getting a pair of Salomon high tops. Not much heavier than low tops and already prevented one ankle turnover. I also have been wearing a lightweight brace on one of the ankles as well.

While the Chucks look cool, they're just a little short on the waterproofing

Ben, how do you like them so far? I have a pair of the mesh ones that I'm going to trade in for goretex ones, and I can't decide whether to go high-top or low. I know winters around the corner and high tops will prob keep more snow out, but I also don't want them to cramp my style if they're too bulky.

The high-tops tool a round or two to get used to, but now I barely remember I have them on. No real problems with run up or pivoting on them. Of course, you know how short of a run-up and how little power I get on my throws regularly, so take that into consideration!
