Guts

Post by Boomtown »

Hi there, I'm Ryan and I am a hardcore Guts Player from Michigan. I Googled around and saw this board with a Guts Thread on it. Only it was dated in 2003!!! i guess i am a bit late for that. But I am here to invite all you suckers that play Guts in this area to at least get out and play some Guts. Maybe you'll get good? We have a website www.gutsfrisbee.com . there we videos and pictures too. We would like to see some new blood. There is a tournament/ demo in Ohio on memorial day weekend (sun/monday) at a big ultimate tournament. if you have questions about Guts, any questions at all, E-Mail me Rymac1010@yahoo.com.

i started playing last year. I played golf for about 4 years( i was ok), but this game is exciting as hell. i hope i get some kind of response. i'll check back in.

He said he wants "new blood". How appropriate for a guts thread!

Just checked out the website...looks like a really cool sport to play...I've heard of guts before but never really knew what it was about. Do most guts players tend to use the pro frisbees, or does it truly vary?

they use the pro model 110 gram frisbee. you can get discs from Discovering the world.com i think... they are kind of expensive, the more you buy, the less they are i think. you can also use DDC discs. they are the same weight and size as guts discs.

did you check out the videos? the japan long clip is really good. the guy with the hige beard is really good.

the main rule is 14 meters apart and catch it with one hand

Thanks for the vids! Guts is pretty much the only disc-sport that I haven't had much experience with. . . Used to throw a few back and forth at Ultimate practice, but no tourneys. Kinda brutal! Rotary-nail-clipper anyone? It's amazing that the Pro is still in use--probably BECAUSE of Guts, I guess. I doubt if it would have lasted if it weren't THE preffered disc. The smooth DDC 110g. seems a bit more reasonable--all those finger-ripping rings on the Pro just never made much sense to me! How about the Heavyweight? Ouch.

Anybody up for some night-time glow Guts?

Ryan--you say "they are kind of expensive. . ."

$4 is expensive? Man! Can I get the $25 Dyed-Star plastic variety and then throw it in some snake-infested sludge pond, never to be seen again?
Ha-Ha.

Anybody know if the Pro-15 mold is still based off the original Pro (ATPP!)mold, or is it completely new?

The original 1955 American Trends Pluto Platter mold (which underwent 7 modifications between 1957 and the early 1960s) became the Mold #1 Pro Frisbee in 1965. Due to the demand, several other molds were cloned over the next few years, including the Mold #15 which is still used as the official Guts disc. The #1 Mold reportedly was sent to Wham-O's Canadian affiliate, Irwin Toys, around 1969 to make discs for the Canadian market. I've never heard it's fate.... :study:

Oh...and as an artist I've always valued my hands and fingers too much to ever even TRY Guts! Yeah...I'm a wimp! :shaking:

I play guitar all the time, and guts never impeded me playing it well. Just make sure you clip your nails, and you'll be fine. The most I’ve gotten hurt was a shot to stomach because I new to the game. I’ve never heard of anyone breaking a finger playing Guts. All I’m asking is to try it. Hopefully some of you can get good. And come out to Ohio for a demo this spring. I know people would be super excited to see new people playing it. This is dieing sport. Michigan and New Mexico (weird I know) are the 2 biggest producers of Guts players. Texas is starting up too. Why not New England? And I think disc golfers make the best Guts players because they have to throw hard at some point.

Also, 4 bucks is a lot when you're poor like me.

Next time you're bored, throw the disc at each other.

Thanks for keeping this discussion alive

Okay, Ryan...you called my bluff! The truth will be told...

Bodily injury has never been the overriding reason for my aversion to playing Guts. I guess you would say it's the overriding CONCEPT of Guts that turns me off!

I was attracted to flying discs in the first place (49 years ago this month) because my buddies and I enjoyed tossing TO each other rather than AT each other (as you say). Come to think of it, I've never pursued sports that have as their main purpose to make your opponant fail rather than emphasizing one's own excellence. I've played a bunch of sports, especially devoting a huge chunk of my life to disc golf...all at high levels. I love stiff competion...I just don't enjoy pummelling my fellow competitors into submission.

Remember, this is only ONE feller's opinion...mine—but you MAY find that that's at the core of why Guts is a "dying sport" as you claim, and perhaps why it never caught on with us gentle (genteel?) New Englanders?

That's not meant to discourage you, Ryan. Just one player's possible explanation. More power to you if you can find like-minded folks and build up interest in one of the most venerable forms of disc play!

Let's hear from other NEFAites...

I respect why you don't play. Golf is a relax sport, and Guts is more of an extreme sport. :P

So did you give up disc golf? Guts sounds like an exciting game. I've checked out some of the video clips. I used to play catch with an ultimate disc in front of my house on the street. I live in Boston and the streets are fairly narrow. I believe this helped with my disc throwing accuracy. After playing catch and getting the arms warmed up we would start drilling each other with really hard throws. We would try to catch the disc with one hand because we knew that's how it was done in guts. We(my brothers, Jim, Charlie, Danny, Pete, nephew Anthony, Donny) would also use the street to skip the shots at each other. The pavement would scratch up the edges of the disc making it kinda sharp. I also played ultimate for a couple of seasons in the mid 90's-boy I can't run and jump like I used to. I think guts sounds fun. I think it's hard enough trying to get people to play disc golf. I would play guts if for some reason the guys I play disc golf with wanted to play but I think most of us are really dedicated to disc golf and only really care about that. Good luck in finding people to play. If I was young, single, and had a bunch of money I might take the trip to Ohio to play in the guts tourney but that just won't happen. Okay so I rambled on for a little bit. Grip Underhand Target Score...Graveyard Utopian Tapas Sangria....alright enough. Bottomline guts is a fun, fast paced, exciting game that unfortunately will never take off like disc golf.

I play golf quite a bit. Ive done the whole street skipping thing as a kid too. It was always fun. Granted Guts might not get as "popular" as disc golf, but i have a feeling it's coming out of its hole soon.

There is one tournament a year(disc golf) that offers guts afterward. We play two on two guts, round robin. I love the adrenaline rush from a good guts game. I don't think it would ever be more than fun once in a while for me though. Good Luck Ryan. Golf is where its at for me.

Guts Frisbee

Post by Mark Banghart »

Hello All. I'm new to your site and glad to see Ryan has introduced the topic of Guts. I started playing Guts in 1969. I also started playing Ultimate the same year. I played ultimate for Michigan State, Ferris State, and the Houston Aerodynamics, and was an all-star for the West team at the 1976 World Frisbee Championships. I also played Guts for a number of teams during that same period of time, my Guts play culminating in a World Guts Championship, also in 1976, with the Air Aces. I am also a PDGA member and have played disc golf as an amature and a pro for many years, winning some but not making a much of an impact nationally. I did tie for thirteenth at the Amature World Championships in 2000 so I am reasonably competitive. I've also competed in DDC, freestyle, TRC, MTA, and some guts with minis while on a airplane.

I give you my resume only to let you know that, though what I'm about to say is my own opinion and I respect everyones opinions, Guts, when it's good, and it's always good, is the best of all the disc sports.

I still play golf and ultimate and I enjoy them both thoroughly. But Guts provides a thrill, even in a friendly practice, that the other disc sports can't produce,

If you haven't played Guts, you owe it to yourself to try it. But if it's flat, plastic, and you're throwing it around, it's all good.

In the spirit of full disclosure, I must tell you I am also a member of the Boomtown Saints Guts Frisbee Team, along with Ryan.

Hi folks, I am certainly willing to hook up with those who would fling some plastic hard at each other some time this spring and summer. I was introduced to guts in '69 at the tender age of 10 and it was through this that I learned the kind of shots I use now in disc golf. It's been at least 35 years since I played but I wouldn't mind jamming a few fingers with some good people. I started playing disc golf in aug '05 after I moved to las vegas where I thought I would be in ball golf heaven. One weekend spent between buffamville dam and at Jason's pyramids course on marshall st. was all it took for me to realize that I was hooked. My golf clubs may never again see the light of day. Just found the course at Devens today due to having by chance seen a video posted on the local access channel, (nice work Steve) and it looks challenging and since I recently moved back from Vegas to Ayer, it's now a 20 minute walk to play. I am blessed for sure. Anyone wanting to get together on a weekend or occasional weekday to go a few rounds should email me.

Anyone play Guts anymore? Glow Guts? Snow Guts? I bought a Guts disc thinking people would play after tournaments, but people seem to be afraid of hurting themselves. Geez, some people won't even play catch to warm up before a tournament.
Sometimes I wonder, "Why is that disc getting bigger?". Then it hits me.
