X2. Very nice work all season getting stuff up so fast! I am very proud of my substantial contributions to that big total throw number... Feels like I must have thrown 6000 throws in NEFA events just by myself! :P

I want to help with proposing a new format for the Points Series and Finals. I have been studying the fed ex cup (ball golf/pga tour.com). Nefa's current system is completely broken. Who is the 2012 NEFA champion? Greg Wintraub or Joe Yaskis? Why arent the best NEFA member golfers in all divisions represented at the finals? Why are all points series winners and finals participants from Mass?

Basics:

3 Regions
North/Central/South
Equal Number of events in each region.
Top 1/3 from each region go the the finals.
Players earn points during regular season.
Points re-set at finals based on Fed ex cup formula.
Finals are heavily weighted.
One champion is crowned for each division.
Everyone in the finals has a mathematical chance of winning the cup, but the higher the regular seasons points, the better your chance.
The re-set prevents someone from clinching the series beofre the finals (Vijay Singh 2007.

This is proven exciting system. Maybe NEFA wont have a $ 10 million prize but I bet it will work.

I crunched the numbers a couple weeks ago w/ regions, and the best way I could get even values, based on '12 tourneys, was:

North (ME, NH, VT)
Eastern Mass
Western Mass
South (CT/RI)
New York

I can't seem to find my numbers, but I think each region would have between 8-11. It's hard to get an even balance, because Mass has so many, and I don't think it would be fair to tournaments to not let them be a NEFA event just to get the numbers balanced.

If the goal is to have even numbers in your regions, you'd have to set a drop deadline for scheduling and not allow for latecomers to be a part of the series (or require latecomers in one region to find a new event to add to each other region in order to be included...Missouri Compromise style). That way, once you have all your events, you just divide them up in whatever way works best to give you the results you want. That would be a pretty dramatic hammer to drop though, so I can't see it being workable.

The alternative is to just suck it up and divide the area regionally and take what comes, including late additions to the schedule. Maybe come up with a weighting system such that if a player from one region participated in an event in another region, they get some credit for it in their regular region. Because no matter where you draw the dividing lines, you are going to have players on the borders who can feasibly do two regions or even three depending on how much you want to subdivide. Should these players be encouraged to only travel in one direction or should they have some flexibility to play all over and not be handicapped by it come time to determine place in the finals.

You certainly would not want the regionalization to discourage travelling to a different region.

I think there should be two separate series. The points series as it stands (with maybe a re-evaluation of points distribution, it's ridiculous to get 100 points for winning a two person division).

And a Championship series to determine Finals qualification and NEFA Champions. I love craigs idea for a Fed-Ex Cup style series.

Rather than limiting play to a players home region, just limit the maximum number of Championship events each person can play. If there are 12 per division with 3 divisions(36 total)...set the maximum at 10 (or 8 or 6). You can play them wherever you like. It makes it a chess match to determine which ones to play, and get's still gets rid of the advantage Mass players have of being centrally located with the ability to play in more events than people on the edges of NEFA.

great idea troy. I agree and would not want to see players limited in anyway. I just want to see growth. I have been a member for 10 years and the finals/points series is the same as it was 10 years ago.

now to cross-reference the stats with revenues earned for NEFA,
amount of money raised for charity organizations, average # of players per division,
average player cost for a tournament by division....

c'mon math nerds!

I also like Craig's/Troy's ideas. I never would have guessed only 419 nefa members, i just assumed there were alot more. Obv there needs to be a bigger incentive to join, especially for the players outside MA. No easy solution though, i get it.

Personally, I hope nefa moves away from the Banquet idea and makes the Finals a one and done event, bigger the better, with all payouts/trophies happening that day.

IDEAS to make things different/unique/one of a kind

FINALS
invited event (members only?), no fees, awesome trophy only

invited:
tournament winners only (still must meet qualified # of events)
(if not enough peeps, maybe the the top 8 at season's end too)

no fees:
$10 from each nefa tournament is put aside to pay for greens fees and trophies.
2012 = 39x$10 = 390 (good start)

trophy only:
season for the money, finals for the pride. and awesome trophy!

format:
2 rounds OR match play bracket (16 max, 9 hole matches?)

banquet could be held on the night of finals...encourage people to come early and hang out.

earning an invite could encourage more competitive tournament play during the season.
to encourage members to play tournaments, charge more for non-members (+$5 cheaper than the PDGA)
and maybe that can pay for FINALS?
