Freestyle !!!

Post by Shawn Kennedy »

I don't know about all of you (and I mean it!), but I do my fair share of delaying and yet I don't talk about it much, there's nobody I really jam with, and I rarely read about it on this Great Forum we call http://www.nefa.com/phpbb/
NEFA's probably dominated by 98% disc golfers, with very little coverage or discussion of other creative disc activities, right? We've got this category called "Other Disc Sports", under which we have but one choice: "General Discussion"which is meant for "DDC, Guts, Freestyle, other non-golf disc sports". But wait! As it stands now, two of the four threads here (well, I guess I'm in the process of adding a fifth!), are about golf. Man! Talk about aggressive. I thought Ultimate was the testosterone minestrone. Maybe there's a place other than NEFA more accepting to the other modes of disc play, but I don't know about them yet.
In any case, I'm a closet Freestyler. May as well start a thread about turnovers, Zzzzzzs, macs, air bounces, snap, and heated discussion about brands of silicone or krazy glue. We'll see. . .
Am I just peeing in the wind here?

At the risk of quickly turning this into one of those father/son debates...I think it's unfair to blame the disc golfers for the one-sidedness of NEFA (an issue that's also bothered me over the years and which I've posted comments about, mostly in vain. I even suggested in one past post that, at the rate things are going, the organization should be honest and rename itself the NEDGA!).

If my flagging memory holds true, NEFA was founded in the late 1980s by a gang of predominently disc golf-oriented folks. (As #11 I was one of 'em.) The Ultimate crowd had split off fairly early in the competitive disc scene (which was born in the mid-1970s). Sure there were a few notable cross-over players, like Jim Herrick, but by 1980 the Ultimate scene had gone its own insular way. Soon after it was the Freestylers. That rift was well underway before NEFA was launched. Both Ultimate and Freestylers formed their own support groups and ran dedicated tournaments. All-around, multi-event tournaments (sans Ultimate) persisted through the 1980s but eventually petered out in the 1990s. Last year's valliant attempt at restoring the proud tradition of a New England Overall Championship drew some older-timers out of the closets but indoctrinated few new-comers.

If NEFA truly wants to champion the cause of ALL flying disc sports, it must be more encouraging and welcoming to other than disc golfers. Doors and arms must be opened. An overall, oversight posture and promotional capability would need to be developed at NEFA's highest level. Beyond that, I think it's up to the "Others" to want to be included enough to get actively involved. It's gotta be a mutual thing.

...oh, I take counter.

Yup. I've quickly found
http://freestyledisc.org/learn_to_jam/index.php
and have been reading through it's threads, but there isn't as much discussion as there is question and answer.
Very few people on the forum, and not much postage, but that's Ok I guess. . .
There are some heavy weights on the roster!
Good info aimed at the beginner.

Hey to all you disc players,
Just for the record, Freestyle and overall events are alive and well. I just returned from the 30th Virginia states Frisbee tournament. 158 copetitors in ddc, golf, accuracy, mta, distance and of course, the best disc sport, in my opinion, FREESTYLE. 20 teams, Over 15 states and 3 countries were represented. There were folks jammin all day Friday, Saturday, Saturday nite in a field house we styled until 1:30 am on one side. with guts and ultimate games on the other, then all day Sunday. The Freestyle competition didn't start until 6pm and didn't end until dark. They really appreciate and respect all disc sports.
This weekend Acrobatic Paganello is a freestyle event within a beach ultimate tournament in Italy. As of now there is over 50 freestylers signed up. Europe is the hotbed for freestyle. 2 years ago Nike made a freestyle comercial that aired on mtv euro, and now a McDonald's freestyle comercial is being filmed in Brazil. Truly amazing.
Curently I am working with the Spinning Bees foundation. I have started the New England division. We do one of a kind hands-on shows and demonstration for schools, camps, company outings, parties ect.
If you would like to book a date give me a buzz,Toddy@ 508 883 6371. or e-mail me toddybro@comcast.net. Keep em spinning and grinning
