Next big course in CT - Stanley Quarter Park - New Britain
Stanley Quarter Park in New Britain would be absolutely PERFECT for a disc golf course.
It boasts a large parking area by the entrance to woods, 90% old growth forest, rivers, lots of land, rolling hills, old stone foundations, grassy clearings, a grassy hill which used to be an old single tow rope ski hill in the 60's, pines, broad leaf, underbrush, no underbrush, old wagon roads, walking paths, nice central location, possibly open at night for glo, etc. There's so many changing elements that each hole can be completely different. There's also a good amount of recreational use at the park to attract people to use the course.
It's friggin perfect, and suggest everyone take a hike through it sometime and see if it should be the next big project. I'd be happy to lead an expedition to the far reaches of the park. It's a lot bigger than it looks.

I heard similar debates in Bristol - the cost of a skate park is enormous 100K+, but is confined to a small parcel. I'd be interested in a tour sometime - it's been a long time since I've been down there. If you can arrange meetings with P&R or what not I'd vouch for a disc golf course of course...
Big Nic also mentioned it eons ago, so I'll ask him about it if he shows up for Wick league today...

I pitched the idea to the director of park and rec, Bill Demaio, and he was very interested. He just mentioned that funding is the only issue. I bet if we can come through with some funding for it, and utilize Lick's offer for NEFA funds, we just might have ourselves a sweeet new course. The layout is nice enough too that the work would probably be minimal.
DM and anyone else, want to meet up and do a walkthrough for ideas? Maybe tomorrow evening?

I'm totally up for some participation in this venture.....I'm just indisposed this week/weekend. Hell, I LIVE in New Britain.
Wow, just looked it up.......2 miles from home, practically on the way home from work...........excellent.....based on the size of the ballfields in comparison to the jungle, there's easily 18 holes here.

Sure, lets meet at 6:30 at the skate park. There's a parking lot through the woods just past it to park in. The main trail into the woods starts to the left of the skate park.
Also, there's room for 36 holes most likely, and there's two ponds. One we probably can't use, and another that's at the opposite end of the park, that may be hard to access. Either way, it's gonna be sweet.
If you look on Google earth, there's two sections to the park. The other section is across a street. Also, notice how you can actually see the individual trees on the map? That's because they are huge and very little underbrush. You can see where the river runs through the park due to the denser foliage from north to south.

It seems like there's two parks adjacent to each other - Stanely Quarter Park, and AW Stanely Park which are adjacent to the Stanely ball golf course.
Turn on "Hybrid" and you'll see what I mean...

Which is the pond you think we can use? the one Southwest, or the one near the ball golf course? Also, are there any established trails through the woods?

It's technically two different parks, but it's all the same. The pond we might be able to use is the one by the golf course. In the future if we had 18 on each each section, we could park over by the pond at the north end for one 18 and at the skate park for the other.
There are some wide established trails through the woods. There are also some small single track trails too. The wide trails are actually shown on google as the white unmarked lines. Right by the circle on the upper parcel is where there is a really cool old foundation that would make for a cool hole.
Here's some topo views too. There's a decent elevation gradient.

Only on the main main trail is there any real travel to worry about. The farther out, the easier it will be to utilize existing trails.

Oh - any possible wetlands areas to be wary of for environmental or play considerations? By this time of year everything should appear dry, but we ran into a problem with a low lying area that surrounded original pin #10 at Cross Farms that we were unable to see in the dry season.

Re: Next big course in CT - Stanley Quarter Park - New Britain
I thought why not pick up from 2007 back into discussion. I wondered why it died out? Just moved in New Britain over a week ago and been passing by Stanley Quarter Park everyday which is near our home. Looks potential to have DG Course there but I have yet to look around but will soon. Plan to look at dry and wet areas during wet season.
Was hoping to start discussing and get the baskets in. Perfect spot for the City and right next to Central Connecticut State University. Let's get started!

Where Keeney Park at? Couldn't find it on google map.
Thanks for the info about Dave Mourad. Is he on NEFA Forum often? Would love to contact him. Let's hope we can get dirty and sweaty soon if it happens.
Which town you reside in? I notice you go to Page Park a lot as I was there today! haha Love that course.

Anything happen with this? me and a buddy go back there and throw our portables up and play.
Place is massive and 90% of the trails and the huge dirt road that runs through it is basically begging for 18 baskets and a little pruning and molding of some lines. The awesome up hill and down hill shots would be a thrill to play, especially in the old ski slope area.
My buddies father works for the city in the public works department and mother works in the chamber of commerce. If there are enough people behind going forward with this, he honestly believes it can happen.
Then again i have no idea how to start a proposal or even approach making this happen..

Jeff,
If you have an IN with the town..and just need support
Travis just moved there semi recently he and his girlfriend play DG..he is a work beast from what I understand and bet would help
for actual formal efforts Mike Z is your CT nefa rep and can be contacted via somewhere this forum I am sure
there are many CT vets who seem to like design work and I bet would help you guys lay out some fundamental design..
many of the earlier names from this thread are still around and would help and I bet could be reached via email/pm,FB
CT has recently tried to adapt and include a CT series w/i the nefa series and a few other events..also headed by Mike Z and Co..I would think they could help in fundraising efforts to some extent
You mentioned you have a buddy who play so there is more help..just need a few more that play that have a buddy and get em to help..
If you want it..and have 2 years or so to make it happen..gather the people and hey it might happen..
GL..always love the thought of a new course..it gets me more excited then an ace
