Lost cause?
So this aquantience moved to Portland from Buffalo. He played some disc golf in the Buffalo area.
From my understanding, a lot of the courses over there are free.
Upon moving over here, nothing but gripe about how almost all of Maine disc golf courses are pay to play. I explained that for the most part, they're located on private property and they're well maintained. Even mentioned that sometime it's a good thing to pay to play st the top courses.
His reply? Disc golf is becoming a sport for the privileged people. The popularity of DG has driven to that point. DG was an alternative sport for people who cannot afford to play golf. It's not that what I know anymore.
What? I don't know how to respond to that!
We're talking about a measly $8 for the whole day, sometime $20 at the most for the weekend.
Should I take him to Maple Hill or Sabattus?

Re: Lost cause?
10-15$ to spend an entire day at a manicured course is a steal. I went to Sabatus last year(9$ for the day) and was blown away by how pristine the conditions were. Not to mention a sick pro shop.
I have not made the trek to Maple Hill yet, but am looking forward to it and will gladly pay whatever the Fee is, I know how much work goes into maintaining quality conditions. free courses are great, but as the saying goes you get what you pay for, tell your friend to pony up the dough, quit whinning, build his own course or find a new hobby.Maybe use a bit more tact but you get my drift.

I'd be a lot better if those trees didn't get in the way.

Trust me, I am all about free, but even at my most broke I can come up with 5$ And to say DG is for privileged people is crazy. That said there are are free courses not to far away. Bellamy in Dover and Squamanagonic in Rochester are both free. Of course The Maine and Spaulding Turnpikes are only for the privileged so he would have to take rte 1 or pick his way through Sanford...

Re: Lost cause?
Sooooooo many people stop at Maple Hill on their way to Sabattus. It's kinda funny actually.
Lots of PA folks too. Many times people have said to me that they were from south of massachusetts and on their way to Maine to play.
I ask politely, Sabattus?
All too often they say yes.
We are like a pit stop on the way to the holy land in Maine.
Hope this helps

Re: Lost cause?
On a nice day, I'd rather be at a pay to play course, because there are too many hacks and people playing herd golf at the free courses. I also find that there is a greater chance that the other people on the course have proper etiquette. For example, I love me some Tully, but I find things are smoother and more professional at Flatrock.
Sometimes I wonder, "Why is that disc getting bigger?". Then it hits me.

Gotta say, I was blown away by Sabattus when I was there last year. That place definitely takes DG courses to the next level. All it needs is a clubhouse with a bar & grill.

Re: Lost cause?
Tell him the 'free' playing courses have 'players' who love to leave their trash and empties in the woods, on branches, under stone walls, etc.
Pay to play definitely attracts the players who respect the course and the sport they love. imo.

Re: Lost cause?
Did he ever volunteer any time at the free courses in Buffalo? If you add up time some of us put into the courses, it's hardly "free" for all of us. Maybe that perspective will help him appreciate what his $5 actually represents.

Re: Lost cause?
Truly a 1%er sport these days at $5 a round. I had to sell one of my helicopters AND a Lambo in a really discounted package deal to play league this week ($10)!

Re: Lost cause?
I think anyone who has an issue with the bills to be dropped on a round at one of Maine's pristine facilities needs a trip to the Clearwater area during spring training.
Beautiful public land, free, decently maintained with glorious 5-30 minute waits on holes with shared walking paths. Most of the pedestrians either have no clue what DG is, or if they do, they'd rather share a quick F*CK YOU with ya than understand you've been waiting for so damn long to throw and would love if they could hold up for just a sec "please and thank you"
