Skill Development Point Series Singles - Odd Weeks

The SDPSS will be a season long point series race which will culminate in an awards party to be held at season’s end. The overall goal of the series is to:
  1. Have as much freakin’ fun as humanly possible
  2. Help beginner and seasoned disc golfers practice situational disc golf skills by rewarding points for good play.

Here’s how the points will break down:

Overall Semi-handicapped Points
  • First place - 10 points
  • Second place - 7 points
  • Third place - 5 points

We will run 3 pools for handicapping purposes
  • A Pool is for players who generally shoot under par and will receive 0 handicap
  • B Pool is for players who have play disc golf on a regular basis and generally shoot over par. B pool players will receive the following handicaps - 3 strokes on w/w, 4 strokes on b/w, 5 strokes on w/b, and 7 strokes on b/b.
  • C Pool is for players who have little to no disc golf experience. C pool players will receive the following handicaps - 6 strokes on w/w, 8 strokes on b/w, 10 strokes on w/b, and 14 strokes on b/b.

    Skill Challenge Points
    • Front 9 challenge - 5 points
    • Back 9 challenge - 5 points

    Within Your Group Points
    • Low Score On Card - 5 points
    • Star Frame - 5 points
    • “Biggest Putt” - 5 points

Pre/Post League Skill Challenge
  • Putting challenge - 5 called live putts from 20’, 5 called live putts from 30’ - 1 point per made putt ... if you make all 10 putts, you get a bonus 5 points for a total of 15 points!
  • CTP challenge - All players get two throws at it from 150' ... C pool players who are within 30', B pool players who are within 20', and A pool players who are within 10' will all receive 5 points. We'll have a measuring rope attached to the practice basket to assist with your measurements.

The points series will run in three sessions ... May/June, July/August, and Sept/Oct and trophies will be available for each session as well as an overall year long winner.

  • C Pool is for players who have little to no disc golf experience.

Handicaps will be applied to the following teams:
  • A pool player with A pool player - 0 handicap

It will be interesting to see how the A,B,C handicapping goes. I miss Borderland Thursday night league. It has always been very experimental and fun.

4:30 is what it needs to be early in the year especially if we're going to play other courses as well. We tried a 5:00 start for a little while mid summer to see if that would increase numbers (it didn't) and we were tight making it out some of those days as well. It's been 4:30 just about 10 years now, sucks indeed for those who work typical working hours but we're restrained by the park hours for sure.

In any event, we're going to ease our way into the year with a round on the white/white course.

The front 9 challenge will be a driving accuracy challenge ... on hole 5 white, the player must call the inside or outside driving lane and must go through it. The playing group will confirm if the player completes the challenge ... to complete it, the player must go through either gap. If they are short or go outside the determined 'lane' then they do not receive their 5 bonus points.

The back 9 challenge will be a putting challenge ... flags will mark a tough putt on hole 15, you get two shots at it and if you make one of them you've got your 5 bonus points. These putts do not reflect the score on your round.

Hope to see you there!!

It's alive!! 16 players for week 1. Thanks to Rob for continuing to make us all better golfers(hypothetically anyway :D )with his fun skill challenges. I'm sure he will post full results at some point but the hot white to white rounds were:

Dylan D 47
Matt M 47
John G 48
Mark S 49

Oh! Adam S also aced hole 3 for a cool $20

Couldn't say it better myself John ... it's alive indeed. Happy to see 16 players make it out to our first league of the year, let's keep this going :)

In the money were Dylan D. and Matt M. with 47's, John G. with a 28, and Mark S. with a 49. Adam S. aces hole 3 for the first ace of the year (sadly the ace pot was just about empty but we added a smidge to make it worth a cool $20). Challenges were fun ... the hole 5 driving accuracy challenge was hit by 32% of the field while the hole 15 tough putt challenge was hit by 26% of the field. Total points will be tallied over the next few days ... I run a poker league which meets tomorrow night so my focus will be there for now (gotta focus in on the B's for the rest of the night).

BTW ... we got out of the park at 7:15, 4:30 starts it will be for the foreseeable future.

Sorry for the late notice y'all but I forgot that I have a mandatory training at school tomorrow and won't be there to run league. Can anyone do that in my absence? Should be pretty easy as it's a random draw dubs week ... just remember:

Handicaps will be applied to the following teams:
  • A pool player with A pool player - 0 handicap
  • A pool player with B pool player - 1 stroke on w/w, 2 strokes on b/w, 3 strokes on w/b, and 4 strokes on b/b.
  • B pool player with B pool player - 3 strokes on w/w, 4 strokes on b/w, 5 strokes on w/b, and 6 strokes on b/b.
  • A/B pool player with C pool player - 4 strokes on w/w, 5 strokes on b/w, 6 strokes on w/b, and 7 strokes on b/b.
  • C pool player with C pool player - 6 strokes on w/w, 8 strokes on b/w, 10 strokes on w/b, and 14 strokes on b/b.

$8 to play ... $5 to payout, $1 to league, $1 to ace pot, $1 to the course.

Let me know if you are willing to help out 8-)

Sandy/Pete V(who didnt have his discs) shoot a 47 adjusted (49)

No aces.

Fun round last night. Sandy and pete led for most of the round until the final three holes(2,3,4). A turkey to finish while Sandy and Pete got cold at the end for the 1 stroke victory.

Jon I have your T-54 mini.

Its true we got cold towards the end - we had a stretch where we had 5 birds in a row including Sandy's drive past the basket on 12!

Great finish by Mike and Jon. At hole 13 we missed the bird and they got it. mike says here we go and I jokingly replied stop trying to talk your way back into it. We had such a big lead after hole 13 I didn't think they could come back. I think we were ahead by 5 strokes at that point with 9 holes to play. The last 9 holes we got 2 birds and 2 boges and they got 6 birds. Damn.

Yeah, I don't have it up and running yet because I'm trying to get a google form set up so that we can input scores into a spreadsheet, have the spreadsheet calculate them, and whalla ... instant points updates. I'm just swamped at work so I haven't had the time to really put into it as of yet but don't worry, I've got all of the scorecards for inputting when the time comes.

Tomorrow is an odd week so we will be playing handicapped singles on the W/B course ... we may do threesomes to ensure we can get everything in on time. 4:30 start.

A pool receives a 0 handicap, B pool gets 5, C pool gets 10.

Front 9 challenge will be on hole 2 and will reward players for a well placed drive along with a good second shot. Get around the corner in two shots past the left most tree on the right side of the fairway (no cutting the corner). Get by in two and you've got 5 points.

Back 9 challenge will be on hole 17 ... this will be an approach challenge from the fairway to the blue basket. I'll have a flag near the white basket representing a mediocre drive, approach to within 20' of the basket from the basket and 5 points are yours. You've got one shot at this so make it a good one ... this shot is outside of your round and does not count towards your score.

I think that's it ... let me know if you have any questions and I'll see you tomorrow 8-)

21 players tonight on what turned out to be a very nice evening with just enough of a breeze to keep many of the blackflies at bay.

In the money were Mike D. winning with a 58, followed by Greg S. and Pete V. with 59's, and Thomas B., John G., and Chris B. with 60's.

57% of the league were able to navigate the front 9 challenge (through the gap on hole 2 in two shots) this week while only 33% were able to get the back 9 challenge (approach to within 20' of the blue basket from just beyond the white basket on 17).

We're looking forward to some doubles next week. Let's keep the numbers moving up ... woo hoo 8-)
