Maple Hill Open - Pro Side - July 3rd to 6th, 2014

Post by Steve Dodge »

Image
It began in 2004, with the dream of building a truly great event in New England. We succeeded. The MSDGC ran from 2004 to 2007.

Image
In 2008, this dream expanded to become one of the sport's premier events each and every year. The Vibram Open ran from 2008 to 2013.

Image
Now, we continue the tradition with the only change being a nod to the course that makes this event truly great. Enter the Maple Hill Open.

Visit the Maple Hill Open website for details: http://www.maplehillopen.com/

Registration opens on 1/1/14 for the Five Spots Wait List.

Two changes we are making:
1A. We are bringing back Skins: Champion Skins ($2,500 on the line), will start at 5:30 PM on July 2nd. Plan to come out and watch Nikko, Nate, Cale & McBeth shred Jackson's Skins Course.
1B. We will have a play-in Dubz Skins competition with $1,500 added to all of the play-in entry fees collected. Dubz Skins is also on Wednesday, July 2nd.

2A. NT Clinic is going to be a hands-on putting demo where you get to talk to one of the instructors (aka, touring pros) and have them review your form and tell you what to work on. This will be Wednesday, July 2nd at 5:00 PM.
2B. NT Clinic expansion. Saturday night before the Long Drive competition, we will have several of the Long Drive finalists conducting one on one clinics with people from the crowd where they will watch your form, and give you some pointers and things to work on.

Brad nailed it. The Champ Skins is the past four champions (Nikko, Nate, Cale, Paul M). The Dubz Skins will be the top six scorers in the Skins Play-in (on the first six holes of the Jackson Skins Course (note: the skins course may change, this is my best guess as to what Dave is thinking.))

Hole 1: Gold tee to White pin
Hole 2: Golds
Hole 3: Golds
Hole 4: Golds
Hole 5: Golds
Hole 6: Blues
Hole 7: Golds
Hole 8: Blues
Hole 9: Blues
Hole 10: Whites
Hole 11: Whites
Hole 12: Blues
Hole 13: Golds
Hole 14: Golds
Hole 15: Golds
Hole 16: Golds
Hole 17: Gold tee to White pin
Hole 18: Reds

You nailed it Steve!!!

With one minor exception: Hole 9 play the RED course I'm thinking?

Here's my reason: A decent tee shot should leave a good look for deuce on the red layout. If you leave 60-90' left for the deuce from the top of the hill, you are going to go for it trying to grab one or even to apply the squeeze.

Just a thought.

Here's why I like the Blue layout on the 9th: The pucker factor. There is nothing that makes you pucker like a green surrounded by water you can reach with a putter.

This hole choice for skins will be left up to Mr. Dodge.

I am pumped for the date change. I can envision in the month of August, hosting a kick ass new tournament.
Yes, Things are gonna be even better for 2014.

Thanks Mr.Dodge 8-)

yeah Todd, that's hurts. But I see that the PDGA has NT's scheduled on Memorial day weekend, July 4th weekend, and Labor Day weekend. I am guessing that in some ways it's better for volunteer and players work schedules?

When Steve came to me and told me the weekend the tournament was gonna happen in 2014, I was bummed at first.
There are a million reasons as to why it is a less attractive weekend than so many years prior. I'll agree, it kinda blows.

The one thing everyone can count on is the level of awesomeness will be at an all time high for the 2014 Maple Hill Open.
There is no chance the very first Maple Hill Open is not gonna be better than prior MSDGC's and Vibram Open's. You'll see.

I told Steve, having this tournament 4th of July weekend might just be the best thing to ever happen to it.
It's happening on a weekend where the country is typically partying and celebrating. Going to gatherings and parties, cook-out's and all the rest.
We are just gonna have to make Maple Hill the place where everyone wants to be for the 4th of July weekend, 2014.
Food.
Wobbley-Pops.
Party.
Dancing.
Pregnancies.
Glow DG.
Table Slides.
See, it's all there and then some for 2014. Be there!!!!

Why was it moved? Is it a NT-related decision?

I heard that Worlds is in August this year in Oregon.

So perhaps reducing the extra mileage touring pro's would have to log to play both may be a factor.

I know that many pro's have complained that the big tournaments don't have a very good "flow" to them from a travel perspective. So maybe this is an attempt to better optimize that equation in 2014.

With Worlds on the West Coast in mid/early August, there was no chance of our standard date being available. This way, we are an East Coast NT before the jump to Europe for the pros that do that and we are still able to fit (sort of) into the standard NT schedule. It is the least awkward of the available weekends. I do not envy the job that the scheduling folks have to do.

Going for everything on a modified layout to suit the skins format.

This is gonna be a fun one to watch and something to talk about for years to come.

Working on the HTs now. It's going to take a concerted effort to bring the amount I feel like I will need to satisfy this event's appetite...

...however, it will be done!

YOU DA MAN JEFF!

Just picked up a case of Stone Enjoy By 07.04.2014 Double IPA bombers for the occasion. But if somebody wants me to bring something a bit more Pennsylvania local, please lemme know. I've got easy access to favorites from Weyerbacher, Victory, Troeg's, Sly Fox, etc. which may not be available in Massachusetts and New England.

I'm in the Harrisburg area this weekend so I will see if I can swing by Troeg's and grab a fresh case. My father-in-law works at Chocolate World in Hershey and the kids visit Grandpa at work often, so being able to drop by the Troeg's brewery to have their scratch beers on tap definitely doesn't suck! :drunken:

Apparently, Nikko is not registered in the tournament. Will there be a sub for the skins?
