The Newton Hill Open makes its return for a second year! Falling so close to the Maple Hill Open, the stakes have been raised for this year, and we're eager to have this event be its part in what's going to be an awesome summer for disc golf in New England. Pros will be competing for cash, Amateurs will be competing for trophies only and will receive players' packs with a Newton Hill Open dye with their name and PDGA number on it, plus more. For those of you who have played at my tournaments before, the prize-stuffed minis will be making their return. Here's a look at what the tournament discs will look like:

Additional discs are available, with your name and PDGA # (if you desire) on them, with all proceeds going to fund the tournament. The option for additional discs are available on the tournament signup form; if you won't be able to attend but would still like one, you can get one from my shop. If you know (or are) someone who would like to help sponsor the Newton Hill Open, please have them contact me at ahassett@gmail.com or visit the sponsors' page.

There will be a six-hole safari final featuring the top four MPO players (extended to other pro divisions with 5+ players) on what's called the "Belanger Six". The Belanger Six came about in response to a discussion late last year; could a challenging, yet fair safari course be designed on Newton Hill, geared towards top-level play? It's called the Belanger Six because Rob Belanger elegantly solved the riddle, creating six professional-caliber holes keeping in the spirit of Newton Hill; reasonable fairways combined with difficult recoveries for missing them. The Belanger Six features thin fairways, tight landing zones, and have the potential to radically move around the standings; rewarding players who play aggressive disc golf, while punishing those who fail to execute their shots. All amateur divisions with the exception of MA3, FA2, and MJ1 will resolve any necessary playoffs on the Belanger Six.

Hole A (Par 4, 537'): Teepad of Hole #1 to basket of Hole #2
Hole B (Par 4, 567'): Teepad of Hole #3 to basket of Hole #9
Hole C (Par 3, 616'): Temp Teepad near lightning spire (that pointy thing on top of the hill) to basket of Hole #10
Hole D (Par 3, 461'): Teepad of Hole #12 to basket of Hole #9
Hole E (Par 5, 730'): Teepad of Hole #13 to basket of Hole #1
Hole F (Par 3, 389'): Teepad of Hole #2 to basket of Hole #18

PDGA Refund Policy- No refunds will be issued after the 7th day prior to the start of the event, but the player shall be sent a player’s package if one was provided to event competitors.

Withdrawals made before the 7th day prior to the start of the event shall receive a 50% refund.

Withdrawals made 14 days prior to the start of the event shall be refunded 100 %, less postage and handling, which shall not exceed 10% of the entry fee. With production of amateur players' packs requiring more than two weeks, players receiving a players' pack who withdraw will receive a refund less the cost of their personalized disc if it has been produced; the disc will be sent to you with your refund.

Don't be discouraged if you end up on the bottom of this- people drop because they find out they can't come, people don't sign up off the waitilist, and on the day-of some people spend their money and no-show for inexplicable reasons. There's always a decent amount of motion on the waitlist.

Re: Newton Hill Open, July 20th **REG OPENS TONIGHT**

Post by Adam Hassett »

Registration opens tonight at 7pm. I'm expecting a registration crush for this tournament- not one of Soltian or McHaleian proportions, but one that will fill spots fast. If you're looking forwards to this tournament, get your registration in tonight.

Fifteen pro spots will be reserved up until July 5th; after that, they open to the waitlist. With $500 added cash, this should be a non-issue.

See you up at Newton Hill!

FPO Ladies- If at least three of you show up, I'll add a minimum of $100 cash to your division, weight you an extra person when it comes to dividing added cash between divisions, and pay out the top two of three. (Obviously more if more of you ladies should come on out!)

Eleven right now, I'll try to get that updated/posted today.

Don't panic if you're on the waitlist or even if you think you're deep on it, there's usually some motion on it as people drop and others on the waitlist don't use their spots.

I talked with Rick a few days ago and the city will have workers there starting on July 3rd, although I'm there quite often and haven't seen brush that's different than any other course in the summer. Until then, if anyone feels that there's regular maintenance to be done on the course like brushwork, and are looking for people to do it, Home Depot is still selling work gloves.

the first one is free as i can not read your tone.. when i was a part of the FoNH we were explicitly told not to do course work without someone from FoNH.. liability to the city and such.. as my question read "..work days scheduled?" implying that i may partake in the efforts if it fits in my schedule.. if they prefer to take care of it themselves i will sit back and have no worries... as far as "..any other course in the summer.." if that is the standard to which we want our course to be labeled then mediocrity it is.. thanks for getting back to me promptly though.. i appreciate the insight...

First things, waitlist:

Will Plein- OUT
Tim Smith- ON DECK

That being said, we're just six days away! The city workers have been all over the park, gussying it up and making it look nice for the tournament. I've been dyeing discs like a madman for the Amateur players' packs- you folks are going to be pretty excited once they're in your hands. Some pretty awesome items have come in for the random prizes in the players' packs; in addition to a whole mess of dyes and minis, we have:

A plug-in Samuel Adams sign (courtesy of the Boynton)
A free 6" cake at the Bean Counter (their cakes are insane)
$25 Dunkin' Gift Certificate
Round passes to Webster Fish & Game
Round passes to Hyland Orchards
Flat top Marshall Street Rocs
...and anything else I can scrounge up in the interim.

The MPO division will be competing in a six-hole safari final on the Belanger Six. For those of you amateurs who are wondering why you'd stick around for another hour to watch people play disc golf, I'll be running a little gimmick: inside each players' pack will be a random ticket color-coded to one of the participants in the final- if your player ends up with the best score on the Belanger Six, you get a $10 credit to Sweet Hat! Disc Supply. Basically, that means I'll dye a disc for you for the cost of buying an undyed disc. These tickets are valid ONLY at the tournament- if you take off and get in touch with me three days later about how you have a winning ticket- so sorry, Charlie. I'll offer a short window in between the second round and finals where people can purchase additional tickets for some small fee which goes towards reimbursing me for this event.

Please remember that this is a B-Tier event! The difference being that at a C-Tier, I have the discretion to warn you if someone says they've seen you drinking alcohol, and at a B-Tier, I'm forced to play the bad guy. Please don't make me be the bad guy. Once the event's over I will happily join you in a stagger to the Boynton.

Really excited to see you all up there for our second Newton Hill Open!

So after all the work, it's hard to believe the Newton Hill Open is less than two days away! You'll see some brand new teepads and gorgeously groomed fairways when you're up there on Sunday- the course and cit volunteers have been quite busy getting ready for this event.

Registration is MANDATORY and runs from 8-9:15am. At 9:15am I start the waitlist call- if you haven't checked in by 9:30, you run the risk of losing your spot to a waitlister. CHECK IN! Amateur players will have their players pack discs and minis to pick up- don't forget to check inside your minis for your random prize! Also included is a "Safari Ticket"- if you stick around for the MPO final, each player will be coded to a color. If your player ends up winning the tournament, you get $10 off a disc I dye- it's basically like buying a disc normally and getting it dyed for free. These tickets are only redeemable at the tournament, so stick around and watch the top pros get stressed by the Safari Six.

Address: 299 Highland Street, Worcester, MA 01602. Drive all the way up and left into the back parking lot. If you find yourself lost (there's always someone who is, every tournament), e-mail me at ahassett@gmail.com with your phone number.

Newton Square Pizza will be up there in the morning taking lunch orders, and delivering them for the lunch break. For people who are looking for a restroom, there is a Port-o-Potty located near the tennis courts by hole 7. I would have loved to have the school bathrooms open for this, but the city charges $400 for that, so, right, yeah.

Current Registration: Please check this for your PDGA and NEFA numbers. If there's a discrepancy, let me know.

PRO PAYOUTS: Based on 17 players. The top four players after the first two rounds (including any fourth-place ties) will compete in a final round on the Safari Six- see the first post for information about those holes. For those of you looking for the temporary teepad on C it's marked with two green flags on the crest of the hill. The flag by the oak tree marks the straight line to the basket. (MPG and FPO divisions currently have one competitor and will receive their entry fees back minus tournament fees.)

1) $335
2) $230
3) $175
4) $135
5) $105
6) $85
7) $70
8) $60
9) $50
