Tourney Days and Players Packs and Payouts

Post by will plein »

For DISCussion

Kinda wondering why there seems to be more tournaments on Sunday.
IMO like the Saturdays. Gives a day to recover before work on Monday.
TDs have their reasons but was wondering what the players think?

Players packs are always fun to get but what if there was a way to pick a disk that you may need for your bag.
TDs usually provide a tourney disk that is popular, which is cool, but not always thrown.

If there is no players pack, the payout should be a higher percentage of the field. Maybe everyone gets to pick a disk
and then spend the funny money they won through an onsite vendor. I like the idea of having a gift certificate to a large disc supplier
to spend the winnings. A nice touch would be to have free shipping (or included). All in all it gives the player a choice in getting what the player needs to wear or throw.

Food for though and comments.

How about no player packs and trophy only? Inexpensive tournaments for Am's and if you want to win more than a trophy, move up and play open.

For the folks that want a tourny stamped disc, sell them separately as CFR discs.

I've seen many different formats for handling player's packs, payouts, trophies, etc. They all work in their own way. Ultimately it's up to the TD to decide what he wants to offer to the players. And it's up to the players to attend the events that are formatted the way they like.

There are more Sunday tournaments because there are MORE tournaments these days,
PDGA & NEFA distance restrictions prevent us from hosting more Saturday tournaments too.

I'd MUCH RATHER run a Saturday event than a Sunday one.

I like having options for Sunday. Take this weekend for example. I can't play Saturday, but would like to have played in a tournament on Sunday. All 3 in New England this weekend are on Saturday.

Completely agree. Also, gives the option for an iron man 2 tourny weekend.

Schwebby wouldn't have been able to come close to the record he set last season without several 2x tourney weekends, they are the best!

I like running tournaments on Sundays, as our busiest day is always on a Saturday at Maple Hill.
If we tie the course up on a Saturday with a tournament, we lose a large percentage of the weeks total.
Tie up the course with a tournament for the weekend and we lose thousands.

I know when I schedule Tournaments, I simply look at the schedule to see when my fellow TD cohorts are planning something so I don't detract from their event.

For a Sunday option this week, come to the (first) Buffumville Disc Golf Club Monthly. One round of 27 holes. $20 pro, $10 am. Rolling start from 11am-noon. More info to be posted soon or check out the Buff DGC Facebook page.

And definitely this.

I have six events that I run over the course of the year. Three are on Saturdays, three are on Sundays. And they break down to three "sets" (two doubles, two PDGA singles, two beginner/learning tournaments) so that people who can make Saturdays but not Sundays or vice versa still have the chance to play one or the other of each set and get the full experience over the course of the year.

When we offer player packs, there is always a choice of discs. It's not an infinite selection, but it's always at least 4-6 options which hopefully can satisfy everyone's needs. Of course, getting there early ensures the widest selection (and it always seems to be the last guy to check-in and get his disc that isn't happy with what he has to pick from...go figure).

I haven't run many tourneys, but after a few, as a TD I like trophy tourney for AM's.
In our tourney's we give a player's pack, and no payout for AM

I think value wise, there is some value in simply playing the tourney, sure. When everyone knows they get a player's pack (i.e. disc, disc+mini, or even more elaborate) and a good time, I think folks are happy.

To what Josh is saying about player pack options (4-6) this I like, and looking forward I will certainly try for more model discs for packs, at my tourneys.

One thing to consider, is many of these Pro+Am tourneys do not have a clue how many AMs will play. This gets tedious as the tourney date approaches. Logically it is yet another great reason for split tourneys. (Next year FTB will definitely be split AM day and Pro day) One will have 72 players one 5, haha!
