Bob,
Strange as it may seem, a regular pair of ball golf shoes (with rubber / plastic spikes - not the metal ones) are great. They're made to be worn 5+ hours (for a typical ball golf round duration), can be waterproof or not, and the "spikes" 1) don't grab stupid well on concrete / rubber tees (causing some people - or so they say - to not twist with the plant and thus hurt their knee), yet 2) because all but 18 of your shots are on grass / dirt, they grab wonderfully (when you need them to).
Either that or a pair of cheap trail running shoes.

Bob,
Ball golf shoes aren't like "your father's golf shoes" now-a-days. They can be sneakers, sandals, gucci, or damn near army boots - just about any look you're looking for.
But each to their own.

Bob, listen to your father (me) when I speak.
Go to REI in Framingham, don't be a bitch, just go there and buy your Salomon, Keen, Garmont, Lowa, North Face or whatever you are gonna buy.
When you get to REI, become a member. It's $20 for a lifetime membership and you receive a discount on everything you buy in the store. Not to mention you get like 2% of your purchases back at the end of the year in the form of "dividends". It's just credit to REI.
Now, remember to get your membership. Don't eff that up.
They have a wide selection of the shoes want. All should be about $80-150, depending on what you get. Gore tex just simply adds to the price of anything. (And worth it)
One of the biggest benefits to buying ANYTHING from REI is that it's LIFETIME GUARANTEED!!!
Yes, I have blown apart a pair of shoes bought there 11 months after I bought them and REI replaced them for free, no questions asked. They even offered to refund my CC if I wanted instead.
I'm partial to certain brands. They have to have a Vibram sole on whatever I get, or I don't get em.
Some of the companies I've used over the years with success:
-SALEWA
-GARMONT
-DANNER
-LOWA
-HI-TEC
The one shoe that did damage to my foot was the Merrell Moab shoe, or something like that. Complete piece of crap structurally. Design wise, they work like a slipper, not a trail shoe.
While at REI, check out the aftermarket inner-soles made by SUPERFEET. TheY make a nice addition to any shoes and give you better support under your feet.
Check out REI, it's less than a mile off the mass pike and worth the trip. Not to mention, there is some nice tail running around that store often. That ought to get you to go there. Lol.

One more thing:
Spending a little extra on your shoes is not a bad thing. It's your feet and a your feet are a good thing to invest a little extra $$ in.
EMS is good, but does not offer half of what REI offers as a store. Especially to its members.

Re: Disc golf shoes
I mostly use football cleats (with rubber bottom) for over 8 years and love it. It wears out once or every other year depending how often you play. No, the rubber cleats does not effect the performance on any kinds of tees (except ice-covered).
Like Karl said, most of your "feet-time" are spend on grass than on tees.
Making long approach shots while standing on steep hill or wet grass can make or break your game based on how your shoes grips on the hill or wet grass.

Dave speaks the truth. He knows that superfeet are the secret weapon in ski boot fitting.
I like the fact you don't want gore tex, which I think is overrated in footwear. Save the dough there, and go buy some quality smartwool (or darn tough, or equivalent) wool hiking socks. They come in all thicknesses, heights, colors and styles. With them, your feet are pretty happy.
Personally, I use the sticky lizards from garmont, but they seem to have a pretty narrow fit, so they are not for everyone. Dave's brands listed above should offer enough variety, although I might add Patagonia footwear to it. They also have a lifetime satisfaction guarantee, which is def worth the price premium in footwear.

Personally, for my feet, Salomon have been the best footwear for DG. They fit my narrow foot well. They break in almost immediately. They are light weight. You can find a good pair on ebay for less then $75 usually. They rock!

Re: Disc golf shoes
I second the Merino wool socks; started wearing them a few years ago and they were and are a great investment. Warm in the winter, cool in the summer. With a pair of good traction running shoes or light hikers, I can't complain.
Change up the socks at halftime during a tourney and your feet will smile throughout the day!

afaik REI return policy is only for ONE YEAR from purchase now.
no more lifetime returns on non - defective items.
that said, i have returned 3 pairs of keens due to rubber delaminating on the sole due to constant disc golf.
these north face sneaks i have now are comfy but the vibram rubber doesnt seem to be as durable as i remember,
or my toe drag is too much on my RHFH

I've always had good luck with New Balance being great shoes - and I was looking into these for playing.

Haven't read into them too much but they seem like they could be great for playing.

My problem is finding boots that can survive my toe-dragging flick on the tee box. Too bad I can't get a protective piece to stick on my DG boots.
Sometimes I wonder, "Why is that disc getting bigger?". Then it hits me.

I've had those boots for a couple years now. Best ones I've ever had. Feet stay bone dry and they haven't worn at all. I also like the flexibility, gater clip, etc...
Great boots!
I'm like the Lebron James of disc golf...except for, you know, that whole being a giant douche thing.

Same here, Bugaboos for past two years, not completely waterproof, but incredibly insulated and feet stay warm.
I'd be a lot better if those trees didn't get in the way.
