Devens Wednesday Weekly - 2015 League - Both Courses!
League Basics (2015 Structure):
Scores & Standings: http://devensdg.blogspot.com/p/leagues.html
The Wednesday Weekly returns on March 11th. Come get your 2015 bag tag and be ready to tee off by 4:30PM (15 minutes earlier for The General). This was once again the most popular singles league in New England last year (nearly 1,900 golfers came out) and we are aiming to make it bigger and better again this year so come join the fun. Our biggest advancement this year is that you will have the opportunity to pick your course for league!
We use league as our primary fundraiser to help pay our yearly insurance bill. We make it fun and fair for all, so don't worry that you have to be an all-star to have a good time. We group players into four groups based on skill/gender, so you'll always be competing with someone about as good as you.
Details
• Wednesdays, starting March 11th
• Be checked in and out to your starting hole by 4:30pm. Tee off on The General will always be 15 minutes before main start time.
• Initial cost: $20 for 2015 tag
• Buying a tag saves you $2/week. Visiting non-taggers can still play and get in on the cash payout but can't compete for a tag
• Four player pools (A pool for players who average 58 and under on The Hill , B pool for players who average between 59-68 on The Hill, C pool for players who average 69+ on The Hill and a women’s pool)
• A weekly divisional cash payout, an ace pot (capped at $250, will roll over to a additional pots if needed.) and a season long points event. Lots of raffle prizes at end of the year including some big ticket items
• You must be a tag holder to collect the ace pot
• We will do a skills challenge at the end of the night as soon as daylight allows. Just for fun!
• Players opting to play on The General will receive a handicap. The handicap will be based on the pool that you play in. Essentially, all scores on The Hill are averaged by pool and all scores on The General are averaged by pool and the difference between those averages is deducted from each players score based on the pool they declare.
• 31 weeks of league play (last day is Wednesday October 7th)
• CASUAL PLAY IS DISCOURAGED ON BOTH COURSES ON WEDNESDAY EVENINGS DURING LEAGUE SEASON
• One round of singles
• If you leave before tags are redistributed, get someone to grab it for you or risk us losing it.
• Tags are in play for casual rounds and tournaments. Higher tag can challenge a lower tag and under most circumstances, lower tag must accept.
• If there are no aces for 2015, half goes to the course maintenance/insurance fund and half goes to the 2016 WW ace pots.
• There will be a year-end Bag Tag Bonanza to end the season. For tag holders only! Saturday October 24th
• Lots of raffle prizes at the Bag Tag Bonanza. Earn raffle tickets by attending league, hitting an ace. The more you play the better your chances of winning are!
Weekly cost
• Tagholder: $5 -
$2.25 payout, $1 course funds, $.75 ace pot, $1 season points event & payout.
• Non-Tagholder: $7 -
$2.25 payout, $3 course funds, $.75 ace pot, $1 season points event & payout
Points Series Rules
• I will track points for each player & post the up to date standings on this discussion thread
• A, B, C & W Pools will have separate standings
• 1st place in A/B pool gets 5 points
• 2nd place in A/B pool gets 4 points
• 3rd place in A/B pool gets 3 points
• 4th place in A/B pool gets 2 points
• 5th place in A/B pool gets 1 point
• C & W pools will have a top 3 (3, 2 & 1 points)
• Everyone gets 1 point for playing (you can accumulate up to 25 attendance points)
• If you move up a division at any point in the season your points/standings will stay behind in your previous division and you will compete in the new pool for the nightly payouts, etc.
I encourage everyone to play in the highest division possible for your skill level.
• Top 3 (or more) in points will win a cash prize at the end of the season.
• Other ways to gain a point - hit an ace

Re: Devens Wednesday Weekly - Begins March 11th
Starting the discussion for 2015 league
Here are some potential changes and notes for 2015:
League will begin on Wednesday March 11th. A player will have the choice to play either course. Players opting for The General will need to tee off 15 minutes prior to the main tee off on The Hill and we will likely trickle start those players off of holes 1 & 12 as groups of 3 sign in. Limited to groups of 3 as best we can for speed of play on The General. We will handicap the rounds on The General by 5 strokes so that we can continue with one pool of tags, payouts, etc. (I compared the scores from our two 2014 tournaments and the scores were 4.07 strokes lower on The Hill. Hole 1 on The General plays a little harder now so the average is probably more like 4.50 strokes lower on The Hill)
A & B pools will pay out 5 spots - C & Womens pools will still pay out 3 spots. CTPs will remain the same except that there will be a separate CTP for those on The General. This will probably always occur on hole 2 to keep it fair within divisions and for ease of getting flags out there with a trickle start.
Still unsure of points, I think keeping it at top 3 in each division keeps it fairer for those those moving up from lower divisions but would consider changing point structure to 6,5,4,3,2 for top 5 in A & B pools.
No PDGA round ratings this year.
Anything else that needs to be addressed?

Re: Devens Wednesday Weekly - Begins March 11th
Did you look at how the handicapping varied over different skill levels? I would guess that there is a smaller gap for higher rated players than 5 strokes. I have not played the General that many times, but I would estimate that my handicap would be closer to 10 than 5.

There wasn't much data to go through. 3 pros on the Hill to 5 on the General.

Re: Devens Wednesday Weekly - Begins March 11th
great ideas and changes. some things I've been thinking of, and you addressed the first one:
1. More points for placing. Its hard and quite an accomplishment to place in A pool, so more points. Which you addressed with a 6,5,4,3,2 structure. I was thinking 5,4,3. but that was with paying out 3 places.
2. Limit the amount of attendance points (I lobby for this every year). There are 30 or so weeks? Make your attendance points calculation Max out at a certain value (like 25) So players get 3-5 free weeks off without losing ground.
3. taking your points up when moving needs some more thought. you don't want to prevent people from moving, but you also don't want to let someone gain ground they didnt earn. What about the player moves up, but their standings & new points remain/go to the previous/lower pool?
5 strokes difference sounds about right.

2. I'd be more apt to agree to this now. Still gotta think about it make sure I can work it into my spreadsheet without screwing it up.
3. Yes, I agree this needs tweaking. What's the magic formula that:
A - encourages players to move up
B - doesn't negatively impact the higher pool
C - works within my spreadsheet

Assuming you've got number of weeks attended it its own cell - lets say E4. Then make a new column: Attendance points: =MIN(25,E4) and that's what you add into the total points instead of E4.

I think its a little more complicated than that with my current set up but I think I can still work it out.

Re: Devens Wednesday Weekly - Begins March 11th
My suggestion is cut out Ctp's all together. Take that money and split it between ace pot and payouts. With a bigger acepot you could even have rules about you only win half (or split the ace pot into a general and hill ace pot), Everyone has at least a couple holes they can ace at devens so it doesnt exclude anyone. Fewer things to be concerned about also, people forgeting flags, figuring payouts ect. just a suggestion though. Love the idea of playing the general. 5 strokes sounds about right.

If this is something people want I would totally go for it. I always thought most people liked the additional chance at winning a decent bit of cash. So, does anyone else want to get rid of CTP stuff aside from Doug?

I'm indifferent to the CTPs. Kind of fun when you're out there, but more to payouts might be nice especially if the payout pool is getting deeper (and thus thinner).

Re: Devens Wednesday Weekly - Begins March 11th
might be a little controversial ya. I get the reasoning behind ctp's. it gives everyone a chance to win something which is great. The reason i think it applies less now than it did in the earlier days is that we have the A, B, C, and Ladies division. So the goal of Ctp's (giving everyone a chance to win something) is already accomplished by having the divisions set up the way they are (short ace runs helps also). You could do some fun stuff with Ace pots if more money went there, heck a ladies only ace pot? no biggie,,,i love the league no matter what. no clue how majority would want it. ctp's are a big chunk of cash people can win.

Re: Devens Wednesday Weekly - 2015 League - Both Courses!
What are the chances that the snow will be gone by the time league starts?
Yeah, right!
Yeah, right!
Sometimes I wonder, "Why is that disc getting bigger?". Then it hits me.

Re: Devens Wednesday Weekly - 2015 League - Both Courses!
Unfortunately, there is still a lot of snow on the ground but we will carry on with our scheduled official start to league NEXT Wednesday! We will need to make a few concessions though until the courses are in better shape. We will be limited to just The Hill for the time being and for at least the first week we will be doing a 13 hole loop. I will figure out a way to project scores out to a full 18 so everyones average doesn't get too messed up.
Since the walking paths are good along the course and the lower road is in rough shape we will be playing holes 1-9 then 15-18 to get people out to onto the course as easily as possible. Hopefully we get enough melt so we can do a full round the following week. This hole limitations also means that we need to limit the # of players to 52 for the first night.
Tags are currently on sale at the Hawks Nest up until this Friday. After that you can grab your tag when you check in for league OR at the preseason league round we are running this Sunday March 8th. This will be a full round of 18 holes (Again, just The Hill since the General is still buried). Everything will be the same as a regular league except that nothing will count towards your yearly standings. It's basically a practice run for running this thing with a newer spreadsheet and a fun round for everyone else. Check in starts at 9 and tee off is at 10am. Hope to see you there.

Re: Devens Wednesday Weekly - 2015 League - Both Courses!
Finally, league is back in session this Wednesday! Sure, there is a bit of snow on The Hill but with the proper footwear walking the course is actually pretty easy. We did a little preseason league yesterday and 5 groups of 4 players played the course in about 2.5 hours. Some people are still using ribbons but most discs are staying on top of the snow. It is still a good idea to keep a close eye on all throws and use spotters on the blind holes.
We have already sold 47 tags and have some new players in the mix so I expect the league to grow again this year. We may start a little slow due to the snow but I expect to pick up the pace in a few weeks!
While we will normally start in the main parking lot near hole 1 we will be meeting at the Hawks Nest shop for the first few weeks. We were going to do a shortened courses but after the preseason round I am confident we can finish the whole course if we all keep play moving along.
Couple notes about discs lost in the snow. Please limit search times to 3 minutes and come to a group decision on the spot of the disc if it is not found. There are no penalty strokes assessed for lost discs at this time. When all the snow is melted we will go back to the usual lost disc rules (re-tee or re-throw from previous lie with a penalty).

Huge start to league! We had 58 players slog it out in some tough conditions and several more late players had to be turned away. Full results later today.

Re: Devens Wednesday Weekly - 2015 League - Both Courses!
Back in the saddle. It was great to get everyone together on such a nice warm day after what seems like an extremely long offseason. With the snow still piled up pretty high on the hill we were expecting a max of about 30 people but more than double that actually showed up.. We got a total of 58 people onto the course to play and we turned away several who showed up too late to get to a starting hole. Play was slower than expected and several groups finished in the dark so we will still with a 4:15 start next week. Important to note that, given the large # of people, starting at the hawks nest turned into a bad idea. Next week will start from our usual spot in the main parking lot near hole 1. I'll be there and set up by 3:15 so please be signed in and at your assigned hole by 4:15.
Among the 58 players were about 15 players who either haven't played with our league before or maybe have done so once or twice in the past. Hoping this is a sign of a good year to come.

Re: Devens Wednesday Weekly - 2015 League - Both Courses!
League tomorrow! Gonna be a little colder than last week but the walking should be easier and play should be faster. We will still start at 4:15 and play on The Hill only. Meet at the main parking lot by hole one..
Finalized the handicap stuff for when the snow is gone and you can opt to play The General:
Players opting to play on The General will receive a handicap. The handicap will be based on the pool that you play in. Essentially, all scores on The Hill are averaged by pool and all scores on The General are averaged by pool and the difference between those averages is deducted from each players score based on the pool they declare.

Re: Devens Wednesday Weekly - 2015 League - Both Courses!
Props to the 45 dedicated players who braved the fierce wind and cold last night. On the plus side, the walking was much easier than the week before with the hard packed snow instead of mush. Scores were really high (almost 67 on average) but I expect those to start dropping soon.
Next week we will start at 4:30 since every group made it off the course before dark this week.

Re: Devens Wednesday Weekly - 2015 League - Both Courses!
Third week off league and the devens crew showed up in full force again. 58 players in total! We have had 161 players so far and have sold 87 tags along the way. Thank you for your continued support!
We started off with some nice weather last night but the winds picked up a little as the round progressed and there was some light rain for the last several holes. The rain really kicked in during payouts/tag distribution. I don't know about you all but I'm ready for a league day with good conditions all around..
I was hoping to advance to a 4:45 start next week BUT there were several groups finishing in the dark last night so we will continue with 4:30 next week. Be checked in and out to your starting hole by that time.

Don't forget to bring some extra cash for raffle tickets. Hawks Nest is selling tickets for $10 each in effort to support St. Jude's. You could win a sweet piece of Disc golf landscape artwork by rollstone farms!

Re: Devens Wednesday Weekly - 2015 League - Both Courses!
Pretty decent weather last night and we had 57 players. It was nice and sunny with a little breeze to start the round but the wind died down nicely.
We have now sold 94 tags!!
Next week we can start at 4:45pm and we will start implementing The General into league!! At check in just let me know which course you wanna play so I can plug the right info into the spreadsheet. Last call for players on The General will be at 4:30pm. If you arrive after that time you will have to play The Hill. Hole assignments will remain the same for The Hill and The General will have a trickle start off of holes 1, 11, 9 & 14. I'll send groups of three out at a time..

Disappointed with the weather forecast but excited to start playing both courses at league tonight. Tee off is 4:45 for those playing the hill and by 4:30 for the general.
Hopefully next week we have some nice weather to work with and can get a big crowd!

Re: Devens Wednesday Weekly - 2015 League - Both Courses!
Weather was pretty crappy but we still managed to draw 49 players for our 5th week of league.
We have now sold 96 tags!!
Next week we can start at 5pm. It seems that the trickle start on the General worked a little too well. There were groups done with their round for an hour before some of the Hill groups started coming back. Let's try the hill doing a shot gun start at 5pm and the general having a shotgun start at 4:45pm. We only walk out to 4 different holes on the general so there may be 6 or 9 people at each starting hole. Just split into three somes and start. If this doesn't work well I'll create some new cards with different starting holes. On the General you do not need to wait for the start call. Just start at or around 4:45...
ACES (worth additional point in standings & $$)
none -
Hill Pot at $191
General Pot at $12
Considering just making it one pot good to hit on either course. I'd cap pots at $250 and start a new one. What do you all think?
