Speed Disc Golf

Post by Seth Wolfman »

I love playing disc golf. I also love playing speed disc golf. I play speed rounds either early in the morning or late in the afternoon when courses are empty or near-empty.

I've been playing speed rounds for three years now, and have noticed some situations that are unique to speed disc golf that need rules. I couldn't seem to find rules I needed anywhere, so I wrote a set of rules for speed disc golf. If you're bored, read them and let me know what you think :) I feel best about the method for combining score and time into Score-Adjusted Time. I've seen some ideas out there for this but none of them seemed quite right. This method is simple but very effective IMO.

I would love to see more tournaments offer a speed disc golf side event, even if it's just a hole or two during lunch or at the end of the day. Easy way to raise some money and exciting for spectators to watch!

Here's a hot round from yesterday: Maple Hill Red in 15:29. +3 score for a score-adjusted time of 15:59. Moved very efficiently but the time is beatable due to the lack of deuces and about 20 seconds looking for a disc.

I'm interested but still haven't gone yet, and am probably still out of shape.

I found some rules for speed golf on the wiki, on the thread the above stache linked to.

Congrats Dave!

If you ever want to get out for that speed round let me know and I'll join you.

The rules on the wiki are for ball golf. My rules are specifically for disc golf and deal with disc golf specific issues like the 10-meter rule, marking, and drop-ins.

For score-adjusted time, their solution of just adding strokes to time works for ball golf because both numbers are about the same (75 shots in 75 minutes, give or take) so speed and score count equally. But in speed disc golf we can go around in about 1/4 as many minutes as shots on easy courses (60 shots in 15 minutes) so if you're just adding them together then you're putting 4 times more emphasis on shots than time, which isn't right. I still say that my solution is the the best for score-adjusted time in disc golf:

If playing 1-6 holes: +/- 30 seconds for each shot over/under par
If playing 7-12 holes: +/- 20 seconds for each shot over/under par
If playing 13 or more holes: +/- 10 seconds for each shot over/under par

Anyhow, glad to see there's some interest. Let me know if you ever want to crush one!

We used to do speed golf at Devens, after tournaments.
Sometimes I wonder, "Why is that disc getting bigger?". Then it hits me.
