Kaz,Chauvin and I took a road trip to do both the Familiar and strange this week. Not because we read it here, just so we could get out and play one of our favorite courses...Yup you guessed it...Helen and Sean's.
As always we had a ball . I rate a course on a pretty simple scale. When I am done with 18 holes, would I want to play it again...now? The answer is a resounding YES when it comes to FR. I took extra shots during the round,we all did, just cuz the course is fantastic. Its the familiar,and its outstanding.

Afterwards we tried strange. It was bad. Like picking up a hotty and realizing it has a penis bad. The level of bad that made us look at each other and say things like "how far is the parking lot from here?" and "I wish we were at an AA meeting instead of coming here".

So, in closing, some times that same ole slam pig is better than the new one. It least it doesn't pee standing up.

Wow Steve, those are some pretty harsh words towards a new course that hasn't been around for very long. there has been very little help considering the amount of work that's been done on that course. Personally I think this course has huge potential. With a little help from the community and landowners it could be this area's toughest challenge. I think with decent pads and great signage this course could be the third of an epic trilogy. This trifecta, RFG flat rock and Tully, Could host an event that rivals Tourney 54. It is unfortunate that Petersham Country Club didn't last for as long as we had hoped but that would have been for completely different courses put in in a small area. This course will blossom into a beast with some help, positive feedback and word of mouth.

Everybody appreciates the opinion but it would be nice if you had something good to say, maybe about the property or the hard work that the few people involved have done. Play and feedback are always appreciated as long as the feedback is in the form of constructive criticism.

Nicely worded Sean, RFG is going to shine and in my opinion is already a great course that puts skills to the limit. the amount of work and labor that has gone into this place by a limited number of people is mind blowing. Folks that have criticism of a course should volunteer a work day. Anyone that wants to put their feedback on RFG into action, hit me up and we will do an 8 hour work day. Until then, scathing unwarranted comments on message boards are not the most helpful. Maybe do a 10th step on that one.

The point of the thread is/was to figure out WTF is going on

I am not stupid enough to believe tees are what has been keeping people from playing there
heck people will play anywhere...apparently anywhere but "there"

I appreciate Steve and Crew for taking the time out of their fun day to take the ride over and check it out....its OBV they had intentions of trying the newby out.

Until people play and test the model out we really are stuck in regards to design...reality and concept can often be difficult to have meet

Steve sent me a more PC version of a review and had some valid points, I appreciate the honesty seriously
To me that is the point
I want you all to play and tell us what you liked/disliked
this is not the old school model of we built this and this is how its gonna be forever
if something the players think really sucks, and I am not talking tees then so be it
something new often does suck..the goal is to make it not suck

he also did offer his help and I do know steve has been to his fair share of work days in his respective area...so thanks for that

I think the post here fits "here" and I got it completely...As soon as I read it I knew what he meant

In fairness playing the course 2nd was prob not the best idea...its tough/rugid and after 1 round at another location it is a workout

the terrain...we can't change the uphill feel
we may be able to alter things where as in a few spots won't be as uphill
things like tees,benches and a few chill spots will evolve
that takes time

signs to help any extra steps are on the way as well

I see a course that comes with awesome perks having the lower portion of property available for all the extra things most DG courses will never see

so yeah did steve make me butthurt a bit yes....did my heart sink a lil when I read his post yes
was I angry at him NO

I revert back to thanks for trying it out, thanks for taking the time to send me a review with suggestions and offering help

Everyone that has a poor review is not bound to come work and make it better
Come play, tell us what you like and don't like
give us some time we shall listen where/when we can and chip away

it helps on the early days going to a worday

Its so strange the mixed reviews I have heard

newb says 9 was his favorite hole in NE now...but hated 18 actually he despised it
a teammate hates all of 17 except the green others love it

what everyone does need to know is all that land was/is not useable land for DG
the entrance of the course has a gunrange on the right and wetland/property boundary on left
it funnels to an access road that is the entrance/exit for the entire project
that leaves us with a start finish location that is a must kinda thing
that does not translate to well lets not put a DG course here...as its nice land for a dg course
we just need to find that middle ground of what we are trying to achieve and what the players desire to then play

maybe it will engage the population to go see for their self

Big fan of Royalston's layout! The up & down is not horrible at all compared to Newton, or either Devens courses, the fairways themselves are clean you can't find s twig on them, some holes are very challenging, and just need a lil more work! I don't think teepads or signs are what keeps players from trying it for the first time but they may keep people from returning! Personally teepads are my only complaint! & maybe Hole 18!

Titan I have time off during the week if you or Guy are ever doing work on a weekday I can lend a hand!
