To add onto the prevailing wage talk, it's tough on every level. While the contractor is required to pay prevailing wage on the vast majority of public jobs, the municipalities (and their already stretched-thin budgets) ultimately bears the cost. "Laborer-Tree Remover" is $51.75 per hour as of June (rates change every 6 months), with a base rate of $31.15/hr...

Doesn't look like any of the 4 of them will be around to complain about it next year...

Uhhh....nursing homes, right?

I think this whole article against the course was so that Stu Arden had the opportunity to drop this sweet pun:

"This project should be 'disc-continued,'" he said.

Thanks, Stu, for your lovely contribution.

Read the comments after the article. The main agitator throws in 2 more cents. Then he gets ripped by a few people. It's entertaining.

Being that this article was before they put a bunch of tee pads and basket sleeves in the ground I don't know exactly how much influence they have. I can confirm that Henry Kinch Jr. is a whiny little asshole though because I ran into him at the park when I was checking it out earlier in the month. Running around taking pictures of everything and yelling at me about how they shouldn't have done anything without the neighbors blessing, because any park user interested in the disc golf course must be involved with it going in the ground without his permission...

This is an email that was forwarded to me by a work associate, written by the Pawtucket Mayor's chief of staff:

Good morning,

My name is Dylan Zelazo. I am Mayor Grebien's Chief of Staff here in Pawtucket.

As you have expressed support for the disc golf course currently being installed in Slater Park, I am emailing you this morning to inform you of a meeting of the Pawtucket City Council's Recreation Committee this Wednesday October 7 at 6:20 p.m. to discuss the disc golf project.

The committee scheduled the meeting at the request of an individual who is opposed to the course and will be in attendance to speak against the project. This meeting will be an opportunity for you to voice your support for this exciting project in person. If you are available, please join us at Pawtucket City Hall, 137 Roosevelt Avenue, 3rd Floor Room 303. If you would like to speak on the matter, please arrive five to ten minutes early so you can sign up on the sheet on the wall outside of Room 303.

If you are unable to attend, but would like to offer your written support, please email me at dzelazo@pawtucketri.com by Wednesday afternoon so I may have it with me for Wednesday night's meeting. I am also reachable on my cell phone if you would like to discuss this matter further, 860-729-0712.

Thank you,

Dylan M. Zelazo

Calling it an "exciting project" leads me to believe the town REALLY wants people to show up and make the opposition stop their nonsense. If it's the same guy from the article, he seems like an opportunist who looks for many opportunities to rage against the machine.

I sent him an email showing support from me and my 75 year old father. Hopefully, the prospective of a disc golf "Legend" helps quash these rabble rousers.

I can't make this so I sent an email. For those who are attending remember to address the position with smiles and kindness. Disc golf is not a threat to their park and we'll be friends in short order.

I'm not from RI, but I sent an e-mail over anyway. I figured it couldn't hurt to show that a course like this is more than just about a local park, and that it stands to bring in a fair number of disc golfers from around New England.

Dylan just e-mailed me back with a thank you and that he'll have my e-mail at the meeting tonight.

Email received:

My name is Brian Klambt and I live on Eaton Street in Pawtucket. Public records show that you recently spoke at a hearing concerning the Pawtucket Disc Golf Course. I invite you to join us on facebook at: Pawtucket Disc Golf Course - Citizens for responsible design.

https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id ... &ref=br_tf

We will be asking the City Council and Mayor to scale back the project to 9 holes and relocating the holes so as not to impose on heavily used walking paths. The scaled back project would give the city and local residents time to assess the viability and use of the course.

Stay tuned for upcoming comment meetings and newspaper articles at the above link. I believe there is a compromise, we as residents in Pawtucket, can come to with the Mayor's office to meet the desire for a family orientated course, while preserving the beauty and natural trails of the park. With our common interest in preserving the incredible gift of the park, along with our combined voices, we can only hope that the Mayor's office is willing to join us in finding a compromise for this project.

I hope you will join my neighbors in having your voices heard by the Mayor's office.

Sincerely,
Brian Klambt

I was at this last meeting (arrived too late to contribute, and the room was packed anyway), and I have to say I'm surprised to find myself sympathizing w/the residents. I expected general resistance to change, but instead heard some well thought-out legit concerns. I don't know the park at all, so I don't have a clear idea who's really right in this debate though.

Nine holes would really make it less attractive a prospect IMO. Better than zero, but still.

Plus, I keep hearing that this projects funds have been received and must be spent on the exact project as outlined in the grant that's paying for it.

Staying tuned.

Looks like the board voted the course down since the support came from "individuals from other cities and states who support a course in our city primarily because, it appears, their hometowns haven't seen fit to use their own tax dollars to build such a course"

This is just a proposal by the neighbors, they have no power to stop the construction of the course, minus a few hole tweaks to appease the neighbors, the full length 2 tee/2 basket 18-hole course is moving forward. They can oppose the course all they want but unless something drastically changes the course will go in the ground.

"Disc golf — also known as frisbee golf or frolf — is a game where players throw discs into elevated baskets to earn points."

Oh, I guess this is actually a quality research piece.

"In short — they don't want their daily strolls disrupted by a bunch of loud disc-hurling hooligans."

There have actually been similar descriptions offered by park walkers about players at Bellamy Park. Pretty annoying that perceptions of the entire community can be harmed by actions (or perhaps even just perceived attitudes) of a few people with discs in hand.
