Curtis Corner Fields, South Kingstown

Post by Jay Melllo »

Limited info out there on this project, but here's what I could find:

http://devensdg.blogspot.com/2013/09/cu ... south.html

If anyone has more info, lets get it up here to start generating some interest.

If you're not helping at Dacey, Devens, Otter Brook, or Royalston this weekend and you're an Rhodie or southeast Mass resident (or if you really like driving), go show these guys some love. Every man hour counts!

South Kingstown Disc Golf Course UPDATE

Post by Jimmy Blakeney »

Thought I'd post an update on the course as it's come a long way since we started this project a short 4 months ago!

First a short account of how the course came to be: I emailed the Town of South Kingstown (where I am a resident) Recreation Department about possibly installing a course at Old Mountain Field. The superintendent of parks responded and said that location wouldn't work, but that he thought there were several other locations that could. This was a great sign for two reasons, first because he responded at all, and second that he was positive about it. We ended up checking a few locations together, and I walked the properties extensively, and we finally determined that the wooded areas near the Curtis Corner Playfield Complex would make a great course. With the towns support and approval, I then put together an official proposal. It called for a two phase plan to build an 18 hole course, with phase 1 going in Fall 2013 and phase 2 completed by summer 2014. It also required that we raise the funding for the course, since the town had no budget to put towards the project (which should change for 2014). The proposal was submitted to the SK Recreation Commission, who subsequently approved Phase 1 (and later received the approval of the town manager). $7,000 has now been raised from local businesses and organizations (BIG THANKS to all sponsors to date: Arnold Lumber (all materials including kiosk), Granville Builders, All that Matters Yoga Studio, Lighthouse Realty, Belmont Market, Stedman Bikes (who will be carrying discs!), Matunuck Surf Shop, Borderland Disc Golf Club, RI Disc Golf Club and the RI Ultimate Players Association. More in the works, and if anyone is interested or knows of anyone who would like to sponsor the course please email me at whitewaterhelix@gmail.com

We are now nearing completion of phase 1, which features 10 holes (1-9 + 18). It is unofficially "open" for play, please contact me for a temporary course map so you can navigate around if you'd like to check it out. There are currently temporary tee boxes in the ground (header board and roughed out tee area, nothing special) as well as temporary targets (stakes with buckets). We are now tweaking the tees and pin locations before installing the baskets at the end of November, and refining the final tee locations (they will remain earth until next spring when we begin to install more permanent tee pads).

I'd like to send a HUGE thank you to all of the volunteers who have made this course happen in such a short time, some of whom don't even play disc golf (yet)! We are super excited to double the number of Disc Golf courses in Rhode Island with this project!

If you would like to help out, please contact me and I will add you to our contact list (for both volunteer days as well as course updates/information). whitewaterhelix@gmail.com

Next volunteer day (which will include playing the course to get feedback) is tentatively set for November 17th from 9-2pm

See you on the course soon!

JimmyB.

It's been fun seeing this come together. Hopefully the back nine happens and get the island hole approved!

Any news on when there will be baskets?
Sometimes I wonder, "Why is that disc getting bigger?". Then it hits me.

Baskets will be installed as weather permits. With the cold temps lately, the ground is tough to work with. I would expect that a good estimate would be late March/early April for the baskets to be in the ground. Take this post with a grain of salt, as I really don't have a clue! I'll send a message to Jimmy.

For all those interested, 9 baskets are now in the ground!
Tees are "roughed in" and being levelled/framed for fly-mat placement.
Selective fairway and green areas still being cleared, but def playable.
Continuing with hole layout, cutting, briar removal, etc.
Props to: Jimmy B, Town of S.K., and everyone that's volunteered!
Peace,

I will let Jimmy respond with further details once he sees this, but the plans are to have 18 holes in the ground this summer! Pretty ambitious, but I think this crew can make it happen. I shared my opinion that as long as the baskets are in the ground and there is an area to tee from, that is all that is needed to hold an event. That said, a NEFA points/PDGA C-tier event will take place at the course.

Targeting August 29th as the date for the first event. Not only will you be able to play Rhode Island's newest course, you will also be able to take advantage of enjoying one of the best coastal locations in New England! OK, that last part may be a little biased opinion since I grew up here, but the area is wonderful and you should plan on making it a weekend event with the family.

Any update?

I have family in North Kingston, so I'd like to check this place out when I'm down there.

How many holes are in so far?

Is there a lot of poison ivy?

On May 9th I played the 10 that were in at that time and it was pretty sweet. They were clearing more holes that day and had a big work day in May but I don't know if there are more baskets in.

I didn't notice poison ivy but I don't usually look for it. Definitely worth checking out and bring the family. This course is a great place to introduce the game.
