3 way playoff ruling

Post by Jeff Wiechowski »

OK so we came across the 3 way playoff this weekend and I asked Karl for clarification....... He said that the eventual winner comes in 1st and the other two tie for second. I took this as gospel regardless of when the other players dropped out of the playoff.

This particular playoff went 4 holes.
Player A took a bogey on the 1st hole and players B and C went 3 more holes before a winner was decided.

SOOOOOOOOO, fast forward to yesterday when I uploaded to the PDGA............. the system will not allow for a second place playoff tie. :? :? :?

My personal opinion on this specific outcome was that Player A comes in 3rd because he failed to keep up with Players B and C until a winner was decided. It seems that the PDGA upload agrees.

That has always been my understanding, regardless of how many people are in the playoff.

I wouldn't take a shortcoming in the PDGA upload as indication of anything but a shortcoming in the PDGA upload process. Karl is correct, all the non-winners in a playoff officially finish tied for second no matter what order they were eliminated in during the playoff.

Take as exhibit A the 3-way playoff at the USDGC two years ago. McCray was eliminated first, then Schusterick and McBeth played on before Schusterick eventually won, but in the official results, McCray and McBeth are listed as tied for second.

What has always been your understanding? That its a tie for 2nd regardless of when the players drop out of the playoff?

So I can expect it to be corrected once the tournament goes official? I did add the 4 hole playoff to the Notes Section of the spreadsheet.

I agree with both you and Karl. Playoff is for 1st place only. Additional tie breaking would be for trophy only. You are correct in the order you put them. Sounds like the problem is with the PDGA software.

That the playoff settles the winner. I know the PDGA software can be a pain sometimes, but it is still easy to use overall.
