MAX or min POWER???
Max power?
obviously if you're looking for a touch shot or a putt, you don't go max power
and I'm not talking about "spazzing out" max power where you're trying to throw a disc over the moon-
I'm talking about full reach back, controlled power
do you think this full reach back helps accuracy?
on an average drive from a tee box-
you watch clips of ken climo and the guy barely takes his eyes off the target, and doesn't have a huge reach back- but torques his body to get the power
and then there's Nikko reaching back as far as he possibly can, not keeping a ton of eye contact-
apart from saying "whatever works best for you!" which do you think is better?

Look at the body type.
Nikko is short and has average arm length, he needs to gear up to get the power.
Climo is super lanky and his long arms give him the snap and power needed.

climo barely reaches back at all- and i wouldn't really call nikko short- but i definitely agree that climo has a lanky body-type.
i just don't like taking my eyes off the target in terms of accuracy
but i don't know if i agree that a super big reach-back helps either... in a way its like you're extending the line you're hoping to hit, but it's harder to get your body in the right position-

Re: MAX or min POWER???
Nikko gets away with such a huge reach back because most of his throw is muscle memory and practice. He dials in his line, does a run through to get the timing down, and then boom, off the disc goes. Its almost the same as shooting free throws in basketball.

I don't look when I'm throwing off the box for D... If it's a tighter shot then I've started looking more and giving up some of the D.

Re: MAX or min POWER???
I have visualized the line in my head for 25 years. The amount of power I use definitely affects my accuracy.
Now if I can tell myself that all weekend i should be ok.

Re: MAX or min POWER???
The reach back on Back Hand shots causes your head to turn away from the target and take eyes off the target. Serious dance instruction (like Ballet, Modern Dance, etc) teaches how to center yourself so you turn back to the exact same spot.
Yet on Fore Hand throws this does not happen. So when I need extreme accuracy if my back hand warm up shows a turning away from the target, I consider switching to Fore Hand. Especially on long putts.

Practice with purpose.

Re: MAX or min POWER???
If you look at this video, all 4 pros shown have a big reach back and at take their eyes off of the target for at least a second: 4 Pros - Simultaneous Drives
I've seen pros not look away, but the vast majority have a huge reach-back that requires their shoulders (and head) turn.

Re: MAX or min POWER???
Shorter back hand shots don't require the same reach back. Check out Philo's video on approach shots. With shorter backhand shots you don't have the same need to take your eyes off the target. If you are turning your head on long back hand putts, you are doing it wrong.
