New course locations suggestions
Perhaps we can post recommendations for new course locations that people in the area might be interested in pursuing? If you live near one of these places and would like to pursue creating a course, say so and we'll what help can be provided and if anyone's already inquired about the location.
Here's where I know of:
Stanley Quarter Park, New Britain, CT: Park is open to having course, fund raising needed to purchase supplies.
Ansonia Nature and Rec Center, Ansonia, CT: Owen Zimmerman is laying out the groundwork, see other thread.
Timberlin Park, Southington, CT: good land and access
Ragged Mountain Park, Southington, CT: HUGE, and all woods. Largest park in area, and 4x the full size of Panthorn, potential water. Mostly undeveloped as rec area. Some trails for hiking/biking.
Giuffrida Park/Lamentation Mtn. ST park: Beautiful park, with lake and pond, variable terrain, Lots of extra land past main walking circle around lake, easy access and parking, cool natural features: mini gorges and beaver ponds, flora, etc. Great possibility.
Sleeping Giant State Park, Hamden, CT: Has anyone talked to them yet? It's huge and perfect.
Wadsworth Falls, Middlefield/Rockfall/Middletown, CT: Bigger than I thought, multiple access points, lots of parking, water, variable terrain and flora.
[bleep] State Forest, CT: It's the huge patches of area south off route 9 by Middlesex, just google it, it's huge.
Those are some of the one's near me... Google Earth rulez

Really? Are you serious? That leaves a lot open for that first word.

Cool Shawn, is that going to be over near the salmon river? or maybe near the viaduct? My uncle lives in East hampton on 50 acres and would be perfect for it, but he said no
As far as the [bleep] state forest, I'm talking about c o c k a p o nset SF. it's because of the C0ck in it.
Hmm... I know of other nike missle sites around too.... They make for good paintball sites.
Bolton Notch State park would be cool too. I believe there's an old drive in movie theater on the site that would provide some very cool alleys and existing trails. It's right off the left side of 384 right as it ends before splitting into 44/rt 6. There's also a sweeeeeet tunnel there that goes under the road that's huge and would be a friggin awesome hole to throw through one end to the other.
OOOooo I almost forgot, there's a huge place in middletown that's one of the pieces of the c0ckap0nset SF that has a ridiculous amount of land and what's not outlined by the park lines on google is wildlife management land, in other words, open any time of day for anything (including hunting). There are ponds, marshes, rivers, A SMALL QUARRY, grassy fields with groves in the middle, power lines, the ponds are probably reservoirs and are off limits, but everything else... There are some of the best Mt biking and Jeep trails in the state there. You can ride a jeep all day there and not hit the same trail twice. I know it well, and is one of the remaining secluded places in the state to have a raging outdoor party if everyone has 4x4's. If anyone wants to hike around there and check it out, let me know and I'll blow your mind...

Hopefully Pine Brook Aquafur (How do you spell that anyway?), or possibly the old fireman's grounds by salmon river. Town is still dealing with all of the b.s. with the land so it's gonna be a while but it'll happen.

into the void...
May I suggest that we try to "spread the courses out". It's nice (and convenient) to advocate another course near an existing course...especially if it's near YOU, but I think it better serves the sport to "place'em where there ain't any yet".
This is sort of a catch-22 (a course near other courses has players from which to draw from - for volunteer work, etc., but a course near no other course "foots the bill" moreso regarding growing the sport better).
Think of it this way. We have obtained players who - more likely than not - have come into the sport because they are somewhat near an existing course (got hooked on it and can play it frequently...keeping the thirst alive). Another course near the one that "bit them" wouldn't have bitten them any more (it only takes one!). BUT someother course - in East Jebrew somewhere - MAY bite some other potential player (whom otherwise wouldn't be exposed to the game). THIS IS HOW WE GET NEW PLAYERS.
I'd LOVE another course near where I live but there are a few already. How about in the SE CT area? How about in the NW CT area? Anything in MA west of HCC? Etc.

-That's also why I was thinking the middletown area.. It's starting to head further south and east. There's virtually nothing east of new haven. If we keep creeping outward we can use some existing people and invite new ones too. It's going to be tough to go too far that the regular players won't want to drive that far when there's more closer. It would be great to have a nice course near the ocean. Think pebble beach... Maybe Bluff point State park in new london?

Just to further weigh in on Karl's point.
It takes a lot of energy/resources to put in a new course. In areas that have a decent concentration of courses already, I think that the sport is better served putting these limited resources into improving, maintaining, expanding on the existing disc golf courses in the area.
Within ~ 20 miles of Hartford or so we now have 4 courses (incl Heroe's).
Pretty good penetration level.
I'd favor efforts in this area to make these courses all bigger, better, etc instead of diluting resources for additional courses in the area.
Quality over Quantity.

re: bluff pt in Groton- the view from the bluff is priceless. however bluff point has heavy foot/bike/dog/horse traffic. not sure what reserve and preserve means (in terms of land use), but i know it has both.
rocky neck state park? haven't been there yet.

it was a hard decision to move to such an 'isolated' town, lacking amenities like a golf course within 50 miles. but the weather is ridiculously mild on the shoreline, so it is an ideal location for a destination course. i will happily volunteer my time toward any SE CT new course initiative. many of my colleagues are ann arbor transplants and they know of DG. i think a local course would get a lot of use.
keep up the brainstorming!

How about a silver/gold layout at Wickham?

I think this thread needs to be revived.
I'd love to make some more headway on a course at Mansfield Hollow. When I brought it up last year I wasn't sure how committed I was, but now it seems like it'd be a sweet summer project. Years have passed since someone tried, maybe there's been some changes in staff and the newcomers would be more receptive to the idea. If there's interest, we can continue this discussion here:
http://www.nefa.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php ... eld+hollow
E.MauMau, Case Mountain is also a sick idea. I think we should go out there one day and just take a look around, maybe put together an object course or see if we can progress further.

Rock House Reservation
I was in touch with The Trustees of Reservations about putting a course in at The Rock House reservation on Rt9 West Brookfield/Ware line. They were very interested in getting more information about trends, traffic and impact on hikers. The place is beautiful with acres of woods/meadows. They were already involved with the creation of Tully and seemed open to this idea. I just had a hard time putting together an informational package for them. Would love to rejuvenate the idea with them, but I'd need help gathering the information they need.

I am going to be going to talk with the head of the Enfield, CT Park and Recs Department in the near future, there is the Frank Mancuso Rec Area in Enfield that is not getting used for anything, there is so much land / wooded areas a river and just this amazing amount of land that would make for an awesome disc golf course. There is room for a Pro Shop as well, it would make for another great course in the northern CT area.
I'll keep everyone posted on what the Park & Recs Dept says, I might see if the head would like to go out and play a round as well.

I wrote the first draft of the RWDGC proposal ... mostly just reworked the on that was used for a course in San Francisco ... but it might be a useful starting point for you. PM me your email address and I'll send you a copy.

I don't want to jinx this but I'm getting good vibes from the new P&R guy in Essex, Ct. (exit 3 off rt.9, mins. from I95) I was involved with a proposal given to the former board that ran P&R but they didn't have a clue. This new guy is young and knows about Disc Golf and wants to do some demo days. There is an area of land called Viney Brook that may be a sweet spot for a course (fingers crossed).
I've lived in Deep River for 8 years now so I no all to well about living in a Black Hole of not being near any courses, suX!
I'll post any new info. I get and I might be calling out to NEFA land to help with a demo day/temp. course.
peace,
jack

There has been some progress with the Park. There are some areas under review and more info will be forthcoming.

Callahan!!!!
I'm all about Callahan State Park! It's BEAUTIFUL!!! It's 820 acres - 100 of which are open fields. It's gi-normous and it's all by itself out here. Metrowest is in desparate need of a course. Let's make it happen!

Another nice area in Groton, CT is Copp Family Park. I've walked out a 18 hole layout with a nice mix of woods and field shots. Waiting to bring proposal to town. Probably resistance, though they cleared/fenced in an area solely for dogs. (called Central Bark). The area has its on sub commitee in the town parks & rec. dept. They originally said they'd like to keep the area "low impact", not much lower impact than DG. Now they're talking about clear cutting 100 or so acres to provide much needed athletic field space for youth sports. i guess the 8-10yr old boys lacrosse and 5-7yr old girls feild hockey can't practice at one of the 20 schools in the town. I'm done venting, sorry. I've got a new "in" to the town parks & rec. Chairman.
Another area possible is Moheagn Park in Norwich, CT. Existing open space is used for picnic areas, small beach/pond, and small zoo area. Huge amounts of harwood uncleared land though.
