Ninigret Disc Golf Course...soil contamination remedeation..

Post by T.M.DYER »

Hey this is good and bad news...

Holes #3,#4,#5,&#17 have been removed until the completion of the soil contamination remedeation....

Hope that they will be finished by the first week in January...

Hope to get permission to run the "RI Frostbite Classic" for the 17th time in mid Feb. 2008

We in RI have been waiting almost four years for this contamination project to come to a close...

So maybe we can finish installing real poleholes on the rest of the course...

please keep your fingers crossed for us...

Thanks,

Destruction Update:

The area from the right side of hole 3 to the left side of hole 4 has been totally cleared. A big ol' wasteland. You can see the pond from hole 4's tee. Kinda scary what modern day landscape machinary can do in a day or two. But anyways, looking forward to big freakin hole and then some fresh soil. More to come....

Hey I spelled remediaton wrong...

The destruction of the vegetation took about 4hours....

I was there on Sunday, day before... back on Mon. at Noon...ALL GONE...

They have done some surveying and put paint all over the ground....

I named two of the trees on Hole#4 around the sand trap" Bonnie and Clyde"... The whole clump of trees around the trap were spared the machine...

Hole#4 should have alot of the same stuff as before, except, that the entire left side is completly clear now...

The back half of the green on hole#17 is also gone... from the walk out path back... Entrance to the green unchanged but nothing behind the pin to stop flight now...

The Army Corp will erect a temporary fence around the peremiter of the project site soon...

There is a fact sheet poster on a pole near the site with all the drawings and paticulars of the project...

Quick Background you may not know...

1986 removal of five 35,000gal underground fuel tanks....

there is some residual contamination that was not completely remediated in the 1986 tank removal...

To remediate this...

The Army Corps intends to remove almost 900cubic yards of soil and replace with clean....

I am on the agenda for the next rec comm mtg... Dec mtg was cancelled...no quorum...Hope to get to the table in Jan and to see what's next...

Happy Christmas and Merry New Year to Y'all

May your discs fly like you thought before the release...see you in 2008

Hey TM,

Did they dig the hole yet? I may be coming down this saturday to check it out. The damage is less than we originally thought. Why are baskets 5 and 17 still out? Do they have to get machines down those fairways? And what about hole 8...will that be put back any time soon?

Matt

Have not been by the course in the last week before the snow...

Last time I went by, nothing had changed...

Hole #17 the back half of the green is in the work zone...

If we put the hole back up it will be on the other side of the temp fence that they will erect before they start to dig...

Hole #5 is not in the work zone...but because of the hole is very close to the work... the town asked that we leave it out till the completion of the project...

I hope to get to a rec com mtg in Jan 2008...

I was on the agenda for the last mtg in Dec... it was cancelled because of no quorum...

We can NOT do anything until we can get to the table and tell them what we would like to do to achieve our goals...

Deal with the towns concerns and keep their liabilities to a minimum...

Hope that we can move forward with a plan soon...

NOT SOON ENOUGH!!! (did I say that out loud???)

There was a project fact sheet on the utility pole near the #4tee...

Color pics, arrows, what is where and little bit of why...

Check it out ...

yeah, last time I was down there in RI, I saw the fact sheet on the bench for hole 1. It all seems very positive though...I would like to see that course end up with a full 18.

Also, for that frostbite tourney, you should really consider a payout this year. Take a look at what Buff was able to generate for their cause last two years. I'm sure $10 from everyones entry fee would be enough and you would get many more participants. Just putting it out there.

Hey

The Saga continues...

The "No Dig Order" is still in effect... and remains in effect until...

The ACOE project has not moved forward since the last report on the demo of the vegatation on holes#3,#4,#5and#17...

Not sure why...there is some snag in the project... not privy to the reasons why...

I have withdrawn my event application for the Frostbite Classic.

There is a public forum mtg on the New Long Range plan for Ninigret Park on Thurs. eve. at the Charlestown Town Hall 7pm...

I will be in attendance to see what happens...

There was a question about disc golfers and their dogs that were loose...

Not sure if there was a confrontation between the unleashed dog and ...

There is a leash law in Ninigret Park... please respect the rules of the park...

Also there was alot of discussion about drinking of alcohol in the park...

The rules forbid the use of alcohol anywhere in the park...

I will post on Thurs after the public forum... maybe some new info or???

I have been involved in this project since the early spring of 1997...

Ten years and counting... the course is still "under construction"...

Thanks for all of the postive vibes and real help over these last ten years...

Hope to finish in 2008...

If there is anything I can do to assist you in your fight please let me know.

Also, I'm in some discussions with Greg Wintrob about overall course development in RI. You have been involved for a lot longer than me. Could you please provide us with 2 lists.

#1 any piece of property you know of in RI that might be suitable for a disc course

#2Any piece of property you have approached about installing a course and we denied.

You help would be greatly appreciated

Hey Gary,

Thanks for the offer, it is not really a fight...

The "no dig order" will not be lifted untill the soil remediation project is completed...

The project is slated at present to be finished by spring...

This means that no digging or disturbing of the soil any where in the park is allowed for any reason... not just the disc golf site...

The long range plan is interesting... I hope that I can make most of the layout and topography involved in the disc golf course an integeral part of the vision for the future of the whole Ninigret Park complex...

Time will tell...

I have approached a few different places over the years and have a few in mind that might be worth chasing...

I have learned quite a bit about who to talk to and what they expect from you...

The space requirements for X# of holes... exculsivity...

I have contacts in the RI State parks system...

I have some ideas that I am not quite willing to share with the whole world...yet...

I do know of a proposal at a private education facility...

I have heard through the grape vine there are some very small courses here and there at childrens day camps in RI...

Is that bubble big enough to attract interest from ???

Gary, I hope that you and Greg can get with me some time for some face to face about what and where...

There are 18 permanent pole hole anchors in the ground at Miantonomi in Newport... I still have fleeting hopes that a course there is possible...

I am sure that I can get permission to run an event at Miantonomi...

I need 18 poleholes for the weekend...

Please give me a call or pm or e-mail dyer_tm@yahoo.com

Hey TM, I tried to call the number provided by the ACOE to see why the project was stalling. The number said to try for Deb but when I called the answering service went to someone totally different. I was wondering if you have been able to reach the ACOE or have any insight as to why they are taking so long?

Ryan,

The project is slated to be finished in the sprihg... it is only a guess... but I think that with the current deficit situation...maybe some $ issues...just a guess...

I hope to have disc golf included in the towns long range plan...

Time will tell...we must wait until we have permission from the town...before we do anyrthing...

I hope to start a post card campaign to the powers that be in Charlestown about who is playing and there interests in moving the course forward...

Hey,

It is spring of 2008... I can hardly wait...any day now...they(ACOE)will finish what they started...

Once this project is finished...the course construction could be completed...

IMO...The course has never been finished...it is still under construction...

Thanks to Matt D. for donating the ace pot from the Ninigret League play to the pole hole fund...

We hope to purchase "real poleholes" for the rest of the course with this fund...also we need some good signage to help navigate the course...

Keep your fingers crossed that all of this happens soon...

NO MATTER WHAT IT IS NOT FAST ENOUGH FOR ME!!!

Thanks,

Hey,

They have fenced off the area where they are working...

Machinery and an office trailer are on site...

Hope to stop by on Wed this week and see if I can chat with a site supervisor and find out what is there plan of action and time frame...

I think that it should only be about 3 to 5 weeks ....

I will post more when I have more details...

Hey,

I went down and met with Fred the site supervisor at the remediation of contaminated soil at Ninigret Park...

They will be finished by the first week in June maybe a week earlier...

They have grubbed out all the stumps from the vegatation removal...

When they are done with the remediation process...

They will re-grade the impacted area to its prior topograghical levels...

They plan on hydro seeding this area with a natural grass mixture....

They will hydro seed twice...this year when they finish and then they will return and hit it with more hydro seed at a later time...fall 2008 or spring 2009...

I hope to get to the table with the town and see about moving the construction of the entire course forward again...

The next mtg of the Charlestown Recreation Commission is for April 6, 2008.. if there is no quorum and this mtg doesn't happen... the next meeting is not until Sept..

I hope to convince the Rec Com to allow me to move forward with some planting projects and digging of stumps and spreading chips and much more...

How about finishing raising funds to purchase more pole holes???

I must realize that we could still languish all summer before anything can really move forward...very frustrating... but a real possibility...

Please keep your fingers crossed for this to move forward sooner than later...

Thanks,

Tim, how much money is needed for the remaining pole holes??

Is the plan to keep the basket on 10, the innova disc catcher, and get eight others like those on the front?

Hey Ryan,

I would like to get nine more matching pole holes... I Love the DGA mach IIIs...
Chainstars are nice... Not really sure... we have $2500.00+ on hand for more pole holes...

I would like to put #plates on the mach IIs that we have...

Like to use the disc catcher for a practice basket up near the 1st tee...

I am trying to get on the agenda for the Rec Commission Mtg 5/6/2008.

Cannot do anything til we talk to them and see what is happening...

I have sent in a formal request...

The contamination remediation should be mostly complete by then...

It all seems to be moving in the right direction so far...Still at least 4 or 5 weeks away... may be more...

Thanks,

Hey,

Did you know that the "Course Builder" is suggesting to players on the course that it will only be a few weeks ....new pole holes for the course!!!!

Not sure where this is coming from... I have not even gotten on the agenda to speak with the town about anything...

Please, Please, Please, Do Not Do Anything to the course...

We have not been given any permission to do anything...

Please help spread this around...

If things are done with out the towns involvement...Kiss this course good buy...

Ten years to this point... and Yes, it could all be yanked right out from under us...

Please, consider the effort to this point that could all be lost...do not do anything til we have Charlestowns permission...

Thanks,

Yeah, I wonder who is spreading that around. New pole holes in a few weeks? Nice. I wish....

The idea of a practice basket is good. Probably would be safer to dig (when permission is given) and put the basket into a sleeve since that front area attracts some vandalism.

Number plates really??? How much of an investment are those? IMO funds could be spent on signage and little things but number plates seem unnecessary. There are many ways we could use the money not spent on number plates to improve tees and signage to help others navigate the course. Maybe numbers on the polehole itself instead of plates???

Seriously, don't purchase anymore money on tee signs and other ancillary items for the course until there are a full set of 18 baskets. It doesn't make sense to buy signage to point players to a basket and when they arive they play to a well. Honestly, if the course had baskets, you could actually run a successful tournament and raise funds for the rest of the upgrades.

TM, did the money that I gave you from Ninigret league make it into Jim O'brian's hands yet?

Hey Matt,

I have the $ right here in my checking account...Mr O'Briens phone # is on my desk to call him soon...

I agree that the first order of business is a full set of Pole Holes and tees from which to play them from ...then signs, benchs and other ammenities will follow over time...

We still have to get to the table to speak with the town...

I should know more by the end of this week...

Ryan,

Mach III,s have #plates... I like the concept...DGA makes a bolt on #plate...it's been a while since a price check...$18.00 each...

Then if we got pole holes in the back with #plates the ones up front would match...

All up in the air right now...

If we don't play within the towns sandbox rules we may have nothing...

Thanks,

ryan, are you ever around on mondays? I'm off most mondays and would love to play the course before the summer growth takes over. I'd definitely be interested in a tour of the temp holes.

Love that course, i'd hate to see it go under, I even love the well baskets, definitely adds character

Hey,

More of the same...if you think for one minute that I did not expect and anticipate this...

The ACOE is not quite finished...as of Fri 5/30/2008...all of the equipment behind the fence should be removed by Fri 6/6/2008...

The fence should come down in the next few weeks...

They(ACOE) need to return on 6/19/2008...to "do three more days work"

The last thing that they are planning to do is Hydro Seed the area with some "natural summer grasses"...a second hydro seeding of the area is planned for the fall of 2008...

The next meeting for the Rec Com was for this Thurs. 6/5/2008...

It has been cancelled...the next mtg is in Sept...

Hopefully the town council will revoke the "No Dig" order for the park prior to the Rec Com mtg in Sept.

Don't hold your breath...

It is not all bad... the Rec Com at the last mtg accepted a long range plan for the whole 220+ acre park...

This plan will be presented to the town council at their June mtg...

It seems that they will ratify the document the way that it is...

The entire 18 Hole Disc Golf Course is part of this plan...

The disc golf course is part of the Master plan for the future of Ninigret Park .... .... ...

The Saga continues...

I want to get the poleholes back in the ground on holes #5,#17,and #4...

I may get this done after the ACOE Hydro Seeds the area...

I like to work when it is cold anyway...

Thanks,

the fence is down, and most of the equipment is gone. On a side note however the course is looking better than ever, the grass has been mowed on most of the holes.

Not sure if you are the same Ryan I met Tuesday at Ninigret, but if you are, just wanted to say thanks again for the course tour. Good luck with the course developments!
