San Diego Lost a Landmark
San Diego Lost a Landmark
The shoe tree fell yesterday. It was on the second hole of Morley Field in San Diego. People would throw their shoes up in it. Some for reasons others for none. It was something special that will certainly be missed.

I can't believe the thing held on for as long as it did. Whenever it would rain, not often in SD, all the shoes would become waterlogged. Can't even imagine the weight. It think the storm we are getting today was the one that did the nasty to the shoe tree.

People chucked their shoes up for many reasons. Did you read the article? I guess it started as a bet. If you lost, you would have to throw your shoes up in the tree. When I would wear out my shoes(concrete tees), they would go up in the tree. They had to take down a pair of skates that someone got up there. It was really hard to get any shoes to stick all the way up at the top.

I grew up in San Diego and the shoe tree on hole 2 was definitely the signature landmark of the course. Now I know how New Hampshirites must have felt when the old man in the mountain collapsed.
Ive been reminded of the shoe tree at ski areas here in New England. At many of the ski areas there are all kinds of bras and underwear hanging from one specific tree adjacent to a chairlift. What a strange phenomenon.
