Below are some of the discs highlighted at the Disc Art Gallery @ the GHO . Next year I'd like to set up a real stand as the wind kept knocking these puppies down.

Our Judges determined the following...

1st Place Jacob Najac
2nd Place TRB
3rd Heather Eng Tied with Shawn Mullen (not pictured) who was throwing his disc doing something like winning the Advanced Division.

Send me the logo BUC and what type of disc you want it on and I'll try it. Star and Champ Plastic are the best to dye on.

i've decided to get back to dying a few of my discs. Gonna go a little old school first to get back into it and do the New Mexico flag disc. that's just a red Zia symbol(like gabe miller did on one) on a yellow QMS. After that I got quite a few others to do. Still working with contact paper instead of sing vinyl. Need to get some of that eventually.

I'll also throw down a crayon dye, haven't decided of what yet. Hope to get them on here soon. Nice stuff everyone. I'm really impressed. Have to say gabe's lighthouse and ryan's yin yang fish are my two favorite so far!

The skull was a last minute addition when I realized how much space was going to be in the center. Kind of stole it from gabe's idea of a similar dye, but he had a basket in there.

all hand cut out on contact paper with an xacto. skull was hand draw super quick then cut out. also placed by hand, didn't have any transfer paper.

Hopefully the first of many to post up here. Oh yeah, picture was taken after it's first round this AM.

new vs. old

Post by Manuel Trujillo »

alright, here's my new dye for tonight. it's a star destroyer. i think the star wars star destroyer is already over done, so i decided to go with something along the lines of 'Conan the Destroyer'. Again, original art work. This took a long time cutting out and placing piece by piece, because i still haven't gotten out to get vinyl and transfer paper.

Image

Also, here's and oldie but goodie. One of my favorites, I don't throw it anymore because of that.

It's a QMS. Did this by using a crayon to draw the image. The wax of the crayon keeps the dye off the discs. Wherever you didn't draw gets dyed.

not sure...

Post by Manuel Trujillo »

if you mean mine or gippy's(which is super sweet btw)...

but the destroyer took about 2 nights total, 30 mins to draw on the contact paper, and the remainder of that night and the next cutting out the pieces and placing them. total about 4 hours i guess.

the skull took about 10 mins to draw. that one was super easy.

Nice work Gip.

Manny, if you don't have transfer tape...
try using blue painters tape to transfer images.
I have found that it works pretty well in a pinch.

also...are you from ABQ? I did grad school down there
and played a lot of golf from 2001-2003.

Yup, SIPAPU!!!! Miss it. As you can imagine I play it almost every time I'm home. Two Gray Hares was the first course I ever played and was addicted. I didn't start playing until about 2005.

Thanks for the info.

Definitely sweet worky, Gippy

Does doing all this dying damage the pots that you are using to cook up the dye? Trying to get started, but the wife will kill me if I mess things up.

Suggestion would be to hit up a thrift store and get a pot or deep pan, you don't need that much water in the pan 2 inches at most. I keep my dye after I mix it in rubbermaid containers. But yes I wouldn't use the pan that you're dyeing in to cook in as well.

Wal-Mart and Target have cheap pans you can get as well.

Anything you put rit dye in or touch it to you should not eat off of or cook in. It's toxic.

I like to use a 9 inch cake pan on a 5th burner. The cake pan makes it easy to float the disc and removal is easier than using a deep pot.
