Alan MacLean wrote:Hey guys,

So after finally seeing this course for the first time on Saturday, my concerns about Hylands being too large to get 2 rounds in on daylight are completely squashed since our 4some was able to get in a round in under 2.5 hours with 3 severely lost discs taking up at least 15 minutes of our time. We should have no problems getting in 2 rounds with time to spare.

oh, and the course is like Maple Hill on roids minus water.... nuff said!!!!

This is what scared me the most. Though this is a very fun course, I'd say Hylands is more like Borderland Yellow on roids. I didn't look at the scorecard but I'd bet Hylands is shorter than Maple Hill Reds. If my memory is correct (for those that haven't seen the course yet), on Hylands #s 1, 2, 4, 5, 8, 9, 11, 13, 17, and 18 are all reachable in 1 shot if you have a semi-decent arm. Obviously tees/footing can change that though.

So I guess that brings me to the tees. Again, for those that haven't played, most tees are natural or have ball golf driving range tees (the 5' x 5' rubber mats w/ green astroturf top). I'm thinking the astroturf will be an ice magnet because it will hold water and let it freeze on top. So should we have a resolution to the tees??? Do we allow throwing behind or to the side of them for safety's sake (behind should be allowed, but some don't have area to throw behind so 2' to the side should be considered for a casual team challenge). I'm guessing the course doesn't want us running on the mats with microspikes but obviously microspikes will be a huge plus to get around the course. Please discuss...

Also since I'm reading that December is the only month the course is open to non-members, will we have enough members in January to cover us all? Haven't seen that answered since we pushed the date back to January.

Holes 3, 14, 15, 16 are also reachable in 1 shot if you have a semi-decent arm, comparing to other holes you have listed.
As far as the tee boxes, I believe you have up to 5 meters behind the front of the box to release, or something like that, I'm sure someone can chime in and confirm this, i just remember going to Boom field a few years back for a tourney, and the Mass guys where saying to just throw from behind the box as you have up to "___" meters behind to throw.

I will help to make sure T boxes be that what they may, will be clear of ice and snow.
I will also have some fires going so if weather is real cold you'll have a chance to warm up.

Yes they will be there the same day. It should not be a problem though. Hylands can handle two challenges at once. I will figure out a way to have the two groups meet at different locations so there will be less confusion.
I will be there that day to help out and make sure things run smooth.
This will be a good thing. It will help to show that disc golf is going to be good for Hyland. If there continues to be people coming throughout the winter, the owner will notice and think he made the right decision by having a course. The more people the better it will be for him.
Thanks for deciding on Hyland.

TEams Dam-Buff,

Sorry for picking the same day at Hylands. Both B-lands and Wick had a very hard time getting on the same page for this match up. If possible we would like to keep this date, as long as you feel the course can accommodate both challenges (which Don believes is possible).
On the positive side, a four team lunch will be an awesome party!

We will play at Hylands it sounds like a fun course and that also gives the dam team time to check it out so Jan. 22nd Hylands Be there or be square!!

Is anyone concerned with literally getting iced at the box allday with four teams playing at once? I'm sure it will be very cold with little day light to pull off two challenges on one course. I'm just saying it will suck to wait at every box allday long.

I don't know. Don has been to a few challenges and it's his course. He will be there to help us pull it off but we will need a plan. Maybe we start on the back 9 and they start on the front 9. If both challenges start at the same time 9oclock sharp that's are best chance. Or earlier maybe?

830 would be a smarter move........ and I don't wanna hear any "that's too early" because in order for me to make 830, i'll have to be out the door at 6am.

If all 4 teams field, lets say, 14 players....... that'd be 14 foursomes. We'd have 4 open holes to help the flow.

I think 8:30 can work fine. I originally was scared that the 2nd round wouldn't have enough daylight, but as I said in an ealier post after playing singles in a 4 person group, having 3 severely lost discs, and playing it the whole course blind, the round only took 2.5 hours. I'm confident at 8:30am we will have plenty of time to get this in (let's just keep lunch to 1hr after last card comes in).

Woah, 8:30 start? That's early.

Will you guys be trickle starting off of hole 1?

What has worked for us in the past challenges was the captains start with the matchups. As soon as you have a foursome, they get sent off to start on hole 1. Then by the time the next match is decided, the first group should be on hole 2 and you can space out groups. I think that will be the only way this will work with two challenges taking place.

Where is the contact information for the captains of these two teams? I checked the contact info thread in the "captain's only" section, but only saw Adam's info. Still need Alan Maclean, Dave Hickson, and Bill Person's contact info so that we can have a discussion via email regarding the challenge. Shoot me an email and I will get something together. I don't think there will be a day light problem. A tricle start would help even more. One challenge should start on 11 and the other on 1. Hole 1 and 2 play quick so the first group would be out the way before the next group. Starting on 11 would work also. By the time the first group plays 11 the next group would be just starting their walk to 11. I do think both groups should start at the same time. It should work out so the groups don't run into each other. It should take no longer than 2 1/2 hours to play and doubz should go quicker. Unless there is a ton of snow. I can also close the course that day so you will have other players slowing you down.

If anyone goes to Hyland before I can remove the snow from the T boxes, please throw from behind, infront, or to the side of the boxes. Walking on the boxes will only pack it down and make it harder to remove. Pass it on if you hear of anyone going there. Thanks....
