It is rare that I am at a loss for words, but today I was so grateful for the crew that showed up that I could barely speak. My Heroes include, TM Dyer, Luke Adolph, Doug Callahan,Josh St. Dennis, Donnie Philips, James Scirad, his son, Titan, Ira Divoll, and Adam Shempke. If these guys didn't show up, we would still be a long long way from where we needed to be.

Long story Short, OTTER BROOK STATE PARK DISC GOLf IS OPEN FOR PLAY

The amount of work this crew crushed in 8 hours is really incomprehensible. All baskets are in and the course is very playable. Obviously there is a ton more work that needs to be done, but today pushed us over the edge. Pictures to be posted soon, come check it out.
I'd be a lot better if those trees didn't get in the way.

ACOE DG COURSE KEENE DESIGN GREEN LIGHT WORK SOON

Post by Luke Adolph »

Wow! What a course.. Great 9 hole layout for now. Pristine beach and horseshoes, etc

Thanks for all the work you put in leading up to today rob. You set the stage for everything and great teamwork made everything go smooth. Hard work for sure and I was gassed by mid afternoon. Worth it though. Can't wait to come back to play

Granite gorge 9 holer 2 seconds up the road makes for an excuse to take the ride. Time for Keene disc golf to take off

well THANKS to you warriors..really helps restores faith guys in course expansion efforts...a big big whole hearted thanks

Devens brings the pain in DG of late I like...

Crazy how sad I was when I left..knowing it might be a few eeks till I could get back to Keene..I was so happy things lined up and I got back for that round..Bob Picard is the first official out of towner to crush it..guy says I wanna play a new course..lol He is a work beast as well and was impressed by the crowd covered in DG work filth

Mark B and Derek big TY...ACOE steps up again with a semi reasonable green light process

Rob,

seriously bro I am super impressed by your work and mind set of finish finish gotta friggin finish..will finish...dude you should be proud and you fullfilled your commitment you once made in stating you would crush it's ballz...well more work for sure but keene went from no baskets..baskets in Marks garage to your garage..to storage shed..to finally a friggin free to play SNH ACOE gem

this will mold into something special and the back nine will be even more fun..the place as stated above offers great opportunities for fun and DG recruiting, events etc etc

again people you all showed and majorly helped out from afar some very afar be proud of that..spread that mentality and lets keep this in motion at all courses new and old

Is anyone else a bit sore today? I know I am, doesn't matter, I am still riding the high that yesterday brought, going out today to get some official hole measurements, I'm predicting front 9 comes in at about 3500 feet. Will post more pictures soon but here are a few from yesterday.

Went out Today and Played! my best round is a 26 (witnessed) 2 birdies and pared everything else.

One MAJOR housekeeping item,
PLEASE DO NOT USE THE CART PATH ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF HOLE 9 this goes directly through the caretakers private back yard, there is a clearly marked path (Pink Ribbons) that is directly behind hole 9, use this one, it will bring you right back up to where you started on #1.

I am not a rules Nazi, I basically have 2, no liter on the course whatsoever, and be respectful, we are guests on this property. As we are in the infancy stage, it is of utmost important we be good stewards and show them the overwhelming majority of Disc Golfers are class acts all the way

On a different note, I went and measured the distances today, here's the breakdown:

#1 325

#2 225

#3 395

#4 320

#5 295

#6 215

#7 450 (plays like a mile 8-) )

#8 275

#9 195

Total Footage 2695 ( I thought it was actually going to be longer, but the dramatic elevation changes are deceiving when determining distance)
I'd be a lot better if those trees didn't get in the way.

not bad footage though..I think the back is rather longer..so 6kish will be cool total

the elevation on 1,7 make them play about 100ish feet longer each though

rob did ya measure the shorts by chance just curious on the comparison

also how far away from pin was the devens bombers shot on hole 1 that I witnessed? any realistic chance for a 2?

Seriously, I thought it was going to come in at about 550-600. I was using a roller measure, so my distances are not dead on, but within the ball park. I'd like to know the elevation change, do you or any of the other Devens guys know how you determined the elevation levels at your course. I love the signs @ Devens, very specific.

i believe it is some GPS application rob

not sure if phones have an app for dat...but most hand held GPS's do..did derek buy one? I thought he did just for this task awhile back

tullz said for 3 years now a summer ranger would do this for us at Tullz..no go

that hole may have 2 elevation notes..downhill kinda off box then up hill at end..interested to know what each are..

hole 1 from tee to pin has to be in the 40-60% grade range IMO

Josh probably put it about 60 feet away.. Somewhere around there..

For distances and elevation you should check with John Borelli. http://www.killerbdiscgolf.blogspot.com/
He did all of the measurements and signs.

impressive for sure

thinking 1 is just a tough par 3 we shall see..there is wiggle room on green for more D 90 feet or so..just don't wanna make an impossible birdy..but and easy three and if it was par 4 how it sits now just isn't right IMO...just hate 3.5 holes

well anyways wanna see some big arms play it and see if the 2 is realistic..if someone can park it anyone I would tend to just leave it as a tough 3..

time will tell

anyone park 3/if so what disc selection putter/mid/driver? and did 7 play as a tough 4 or an easy 4? I think the hole requires 2 tough shots and a putt...but again if it is playing with lil scoring spread the green has room to evolve in the future to strengthen the upshot

I personally took a 6 but had 2 terrible awful shots to start

rob another thought maybe a drop box of some kind for hole 1 for people to get scorecards and drop them off so we can review scoring spreads..might help us see what needs what better..math does not lie or a large sample size

I think you can potentially get a bit more distance on hole 1 and have a chance at 2. Its a good hole!

Hole 3 - Josh put it within 20 feet and hit the birdie putt (not sure what disc). I put it about 35 feet away and missed (buzzz)..

Hole 7 - I put it close to the base of the up hill portion but a bit too far to the left. I had to just toss out to the open sort of laterally and then parked it under the basket for a drop in 4. It should be a par 3 IMO.

I talked to the Army Corp guys today re: signage and directions to hole one for the kiosk that they have up near the parking area. I also discussed them making some steps up the bank to hole 1. We'll see if they come through. I explained it was more of a safety thing yadda yadda, so hopefully they will move a little.

Also in talking to with the corps, they are going though some management changes and some decisions are being made above Jim's head. They forced the boy scouts who have been using the park for a one week camp for the last 15 years to pay a $250 5 year license fee. Unfortunately it might mean license fees for us as well. Ttime will tell what it really means, but hopefully they will move at govt speed "glacial" so we might not need to worry about it for a bit. Generally it means that "handshake" deals we've made in the past might be a thing of the past.

I do have GPS thing but I gotta admit I have no idea how to use it. I tried testing it at Tully, and let's just say I need some practice. I will poke around and see if I can find an iphone app as well.

Hey Rob and Titan,

I agree with Luke on hole #7...I did not get all of my drive... going up the right side toward the short tee...hit a small branch along the way...came down just left and a little ahead of the short tee...was able to shoot to the bottom of the up slope...easy up for a 12 ft putt for the easy 4...

I want to say that all of the holes are FUN to play...

I was happy that I could come up and help move things forward...

Thanks for the Kudos...

I look forward to my next trip up...

Thanks,

Went out and played today, and did pretty well. Shot a legit 25 pars on 1-3-4-5-8-9 , birdies on 2,6, and got a 3 on #7, should have birdied 9 but missed a 20 footer. I don't think going out there will ever get old!

I'm not convinced that #7 should be a 3, I'm keeping an open mind but I will be interested in seeing what the huge guns of this game can do on it. I got my 1st 3 on it today and was psyched, crushed a flick the base of the hill, and then flicked again and made it to the top, hit a 15 footer for the 3.

Maybe someone with more experience determining pars can weigh in, I'm currently of the mind that If the only way an average arm can get a birdie is by nailing a 150-200 foot field shot, then it is something to look at. What are the schools of thought here? Discuss.

rob,

math really will cut through many opinions..so just need time to gather a sample size...
also rob made the airways so nice that the lengthy holes are semi doable if ya can throw max distance

torn myself on the 3-4 issue there..

hole 1 I think is def a 3..as first thought was par 4 though I am now not convinced of that

funny but hole 3 will turn into a must bird for many top level DG'ers....and some of us OK golfers as well

Luke,
TY for the feedback response..I value your input

Derek,

just work on maybe finding someone who knows how to use GPS or worst case we have plentyof time for more accurate distances..heck tully is still way off on signage..lol

TM..yes pictures and more pictures would be awesome..good thing they have a former photo guy on their crew up there..so soon I am sure we can see the entire vision in picture form

also please folks...this is crucial my next statement

there is now new issues as many courses often have...we will leave those issues alone for now cuz I tend to think it is just the first "growing pains" of the course and ACOE to KDGC relationship..we all have weathered that storm at our respective DAM courses...so we will tread easy on that for now

So that said

Please all and any DG'ers please shoot ACOE in Keene an email TY'ing them for the land use and for bringing DG to the property...I really do urge you all to do this..it will help the relationship get off to a great start and give them that warm fuzzy feeling...

will post email when I find it..on their website I am sure

TY

edit derek if ya have link hit us up with it and I will put a more formal thread to the Nefa community..if they have a general Email would be best not to spam bomb someones direct email..TY

I am constantly amazed by the power of social networking. Last night I posted a quick note on facebook to have people send the Army Corps guys a quick thank you email. I talked to Jim this morning to discuss access points, signage that sort of thing, and he specifically said he was amazed by the number of emails he received saying thank you, and was shocked by the number of people already playing the course. KA BOOOM

Also, our website has been updated http:// keenediscgolf . com (spaces included to prevent spam). My kids and I are planning on doing some arts and crafts this weekend to put together a poster for both park kiosks. I've also been putting together a score card.
