I'm gunna repost this so it's on the most current page.

Sup fellas, I am looking forward to a 3 day weekend next week for MLK day and I couldn't think of a better way to celebrate the struggle for our civil rights better than a bunch of white dudes throwing discs in the woods. Here is my proposal:

What: $5 Random Team Doubles
Where: Dacey DGC in Franklin MA
When: MLK Day, Monday 1/21/13, flip for teams at 9:15, tee off at 9:30
All money gets paid out to first and second place teams.

One week from today! Seems to be lots of interest between Tully Ice Bowl and Borderlands doubles. Should be fun!

To be fair, it would be right to give the course a cut. It's expensive to build a course and keep it up and running.

Agreed. Do it the same as Borderland and charge $6($7 with Ace Pot) with a buck per person going to the course.

Yesterday at Borderland, overheard a couple golfers bad mouthing the league players. Saying that the players don't do anything for the course, and that they are just a bunch of elitists! They said that the league players don't do any course work and that everything was done by one man named Dean.

It's really funny to hear something like this. For anyone that has played casual or league rounds with me, you know I'm an ambassador for the course and league in general. Always trying to get new players to join in, since it is such a good learning experience for the new players to play a doubles round with other, more experienced golfers. Does that sound elitist? While I agree that Dean has done the lions share of the work out at Borderland, a lot of what has happened to the course over the past 5 years has been a result of leagues and the club. The fact that the person knew enough about Borderland to know Dean's name is interesting. Really wonder who that could have been...

So really, is it worth it in the end to run a league at a course where the players that frequent the course don't give 2 shakes about all the good that those league players bring forward?

What I'm trying to say is that sometimes, it doesn't pay to run things for the benefit of others. All you get in return is a bad attitude misdirected towards the people that do the work. Should Dacey run a league and collect a buck a player to try and raise some funds? Sure, it could benefit everyone. Is it worth the efforts when in the end, those people will be looked down on for what they do? Guess that's a question for the people that are looking to run things.

Woah! Easy there, take a step back. Didn't know you were there yesterday? After this response, I wonder if that person bad mouthing all of us was you.

We should be talking about league and Dacey. This b-fest is getting us and the course nowhere. We're acting like a bunch of little girls.

Asking for a cut from a casual gathering? Hmmmmm...

I think putting a donation jar out that morning might be more appropriate, but when it comes to what's appropriate, I'm probably not the one to be giving opinions.

Unless next Monday is a league day. Leagues should give back to their course.

I wish I heard this conversation. While not all Borderland regulars are able to help with the course maintenance, there is a solid core of us who help keep Borderland clean, shoveled, replacing baskets etc.......Elitists? I, and the dozen or so guys I play with regularly, are always trying to get people we run into to come to league, emphasizing how casual it is and open to all skill levels.

I agree John and Matt - these comments are ignorant. I sure hope it was not said by anyone I know. This would be highly disappointing.

I have never and will never think myself better than any other player on the course. I am always encouraging others to join league because I wish someone had encouraged me to years before I finally did. I also believe that players will take more ownership in a course when they are in more organized weekly groups.

I honestly think people feel that way because they just don't know any better. They don't realize that there is a fairly large-sized following of very dedicated and enthusiastic disc golfers out there. They see us with the bags and the dg-related clothing....hear us using the terminology and talking about different discs and flight patterns...different courses and tournaments. They see us throw shots they can't make, and see us get bugged when we miss putts they aren't capable of hitting. I can remember when I first started playing...I was somewhat intimidated by it...I think we all were like that up to the point where we played our first league and got our feet wet in tournament/competetive play. For many, that hill is too large to climb so they are put off by it and ultimately end up with the negative attitude towards the "Elitist golfers".

What I find frustrating is that people bad mouth it, yet they have ZERO clue. Verbal Diarrhea. I, too, wish I was there when this went down. It's moments like those that provide excellent opportunities to educate the uneducated. I think that's one of the best qualities league players have - the willingness to educate and show how we are stuards of the course.

We should maybe run some informal leagues to see how attendance is and spread the word to the local golfers...
Lets make it so there is never that sentiment about "league" at Dacey.

Wow! Clueless comments. No one would argue that Dean is the official Borderland workhorse! What those folks don't understand is that the league players make a lot of that work possible by generating the funds needed for equipment and supplies. Without the funds, we don't have much to work with. Thank you league players! Please keep coming! Also, if any of those folks making the comments are reading this.... next time you see Dean, ask him what he thinks of league players!

As the person who collects the money for league, I can tell you that some work even goes into it. Not much, but if I have a crappy round and want to take off I still have to wait to make sure payouts happen. Plus my warmup usually consists of 3 or 4 putts then collecting money, getting pairings set up, dividing into A/B pools, checking my phone to see how far Kevin is from the course, etc... It seems like no big deal, but Thursday singles fell apart at Borderland over the people running league having injuries or work (both important things) interfere.

I can only get to the course Sunday mornings. Would love to help out with maintenance but can never get away from the house to do so (2 kids and a wife who works too much can do that to you). Plus me with any sort of tools is a recipe for disaster!

Dean is a machine (I've seen him out there with the chainsaw), but when push comes to shove, it's league people who come in and do a lot of the work too.

I appreciate that Dacey is such a fine course in such a short time. Will I play it? Yes! Could I make the time to get out to the course for a workday? Probably not. If there was a league, would my $1 a week support the course in some small way? Hell yea!

That's a great post Eric. Most league players are the ones picking up trash, building tee boxes, running other leagues and tournaments. They are the stuards of the game. Lower level players don't even realize what those league players are doing to help grow the game and keep their course in the best shape possible. Most of them don't lift a finger to even pick up a piece of trash. If they approached most league players for a little instruction I bet they would learn a tremendous amount just from spending 10 minutes with some of these league players. And I know very few league players that wouldn't take a novice over to the side and try to help them develop their throw
