I've got two league questions for everyone and would appreciate constructive conversation. I'll start by saying that we have some pretty series play flow issues on league nights. It's baffling, last night for example the first group finished 1 hour and 50 minutes before the last group came in. When you factor in the early start for the General it still leaves at least 50 minutes of added play time for some groups. We have to be more aware of our pace of play and the best rule of thumb is that if no one is in front of you and there is usually a group waiting behind you than you need to speed up your pace of play. Cards coming in should be no more than 20 minutes apart in my opinion and ideally everyone should be done playing by 7:50 - 8:00pm at the latest.

My questions are as follows:

How important is tag # to you?

Would it be acceptable to NOT provide payouts on league nights and keep a "bank" for each person to be payable at the Bag Tag Bonanza or shortly after if you aren't in attendance there?

Reading 80-100 names is probably not necessary and it also is not fun to wait for well over an hour in some cases to receive a couple of bucks. There is a reason half of the people leave shortly after their round and last night about 8 of the people who got paid where not there to collect their winnings. I honestly can't be responsible for holding money for people and have always put that money into course funds but that isn't right either. You earned it and you should get it.

I'm seriously considering making tag # irrelevant and going to a bank system where no one gets paid out at the end of the night. While I know it's cool always trying to improve your tag # regardless of your skill level but is it really worth the wait? Our participant #'s have been dropping every week for the last month and I directly attribute that to the fact that you either need to leave and forfeit money or have to wait so long to obtain your tag and money.

Great weather on Wednesday and 78 players. Had several personal best scores out there:

Jeremy Draeger 54
Bill Pacheco 62
Ethan Strauss 69

There may be a few changes as of next week to the league structure. Trying to close up shop 20-30 minutes earlier each night. More soon.

ACES (worth additional point in standings & $$) - none

Ace pot #1 at $250
Ace pot #2 at $153 + next weeks money in

This may end up being a long post, sorry for that! Please do read if you are a league participant..

As you may have read on the Devens Facebook page we are looking to make a few small changes to our weekly league. I thank everyone for their comments and value every opinion. John Borelli created this league nearly 10 years ago and it has grown significantly each and every year since it's inception.

This is the average number of players per night for the last 6 years.

2011 - 20
2012 - 31.06
2013 - 47.52
2014 - 59.12
2015 - 66.58
2016 so far - 86.82

Thats about 430% growth since the 2011 season and there isn't much room for growth left in the current league configuration and, in fact, our participant numbers are already slipping from earlier this season. Aside from being a fun thing to do the league is responsible for keeping the courses in the ground by paying our large annual bills along with providing funds to other courses so that they can install 18 hole courses quicker. We've now donated thousands of dollars to other courses and we should all be proud to be part of the community.

I'm faced with a problem, I don't want it to stop growing but cannot add on additional work involved in running the league and I don't think we need to, in fact, I think we can make it easier on ourselves and get out earlier at the end of every league night in the process. I believe that we can take the system that Tim Seiger built and use it to our advantage. This automated system already cuts about 15 minutes off of the time you spend at league and it eliminates a lot of the leg work during check in and score reporting portions of league so all I'm really asking for here is the cooperation of everyone.

The problems are basic and manageable in smaller leagues but if we want to continue to grow we have to adapt. For the remainder of the season we will be making the following changes.

we will be cutting off registration at 5:20pm going forward. This must remain firm. If you can't get paid and registered by 5:20 and out to your hole by 5:30 than we cannot hold up a full course. Please plan accordingly if you wish to come to league.
we will be holding all nightly winnings until the end of the year. I already keep track of your winnings in the standings and I will create a second column with your banked money. I know it is great to be able to walk home with some cash but I think this change is for the better of the entire league. You'll be able to track everything and will either get a cash payment at the bonanza or a paypal payment within a few days of that event. If this does not work for you, I apologize and ask for you to understand that there isn't a great balance here. Mandating that you must be present to accept your cash is not what I think we should do going forward and I cannot be responsible for holding money/paying out on a ongoing and varied basis. One banked amount for everyone works best for me and I hope that's OK with you.

In addition, if everyone follows these simple guidelines we have already made significant improvement and we can continue to grow.

Report to your assigned hole on time. The automated system places people on the course in the most efficient way possible. We've considered all course flow issues and we ask that you understand that you have been assigned that specific hole for a reason.
Please keep up the pace of play. We all have individual styles of and we shouldn't need to change our style in order to keep play moving along. A simple protocol would be to keep an eye on those in front of your group and behind your group. If you never have to wait for a group to finish a hole but often have a group waiting behind you than your group is a creating a course flow problem and you should pick up the pace a bit.

We should be able to keep tag distribution the same and ace pot will still be paid out when hit. With banking money people can be free to stay to hang out or head home without the loss of money. You should still grab the highest tag from the board if you leave. My goal is to be done with tag distribution by 8:15. You should aim to be done with your round by 7:50pm at the latest.

Thank you for your cooperation!

Thanks Luke, looks good. Keep my zero dollars banked for me will ya. Honestly anything that makes it easier for you then do it. Im sure if you were told that you would have a 90 person round to organize each week, you would of had second thoughts taking over league back when borelli moved. We all greatly appreciate though and i doubt anyone would have issue with changes that need to happen. Its funny thinking about it, alot of issues that are issues with 90 people are never concerns with 30 (i.e. starting holes). Even the tags themselves, its nice to get a tag but everyone would live without them if we needed to.

The great weather streak continued on Wednesday and we had 74 players. Had several personal best scores out there. Here are the ones that I can recall:

Kristina Draeger 67
Alyssa Sartelle 66

Thank you to everyone for your cooperation with the changes. We cut off about 10 minutes yesterday and I think we can cut off another 15 or 20 going forward. As a reminder, we will cut off registration and put the system into score reporting mode at 5:20pm and tee off is at 5:30pm sharp. If you wish to play league please arrive before 5:20pm. As usual, the cut off for general groups is 5pm.

An additional note, the back of the Hill didn't hear the start yesterday. With the firm 5:30 start time why don't we all just start playing at 5:30pm. I'll still call a start but if you don't hear anything for a minute or two just start your round. Just don't start before 5:30pm.

ACES (worth additional point in standings & $$) - none

Ace pot #1 at $250
Ace pot #2 at $208 + next weeks money in

There should be two full ace pots next week, come and get it!

The far back holes haven't been hearing the start call. With the new registration cut off its safe to assume we start right at 5:30 but I'll still yell a start anyway.

2 ace lots capped at$250 are likely tonight!

Re: Devens Wednesday Weekly League - 2016 - Both Courses!

Post by Luke Adolph »

League tonight. Weather looks perfect!

I expect the General to get pretty filled up today with the tournament coming up this weekend so get there early if you wanna play that course.

Will be trying a different arrangement of starting holes on both courses in another attempt to improve course flow.

We will cut off registration and put the system into score reporting mode at 5:20pm and tee off is at 5:30pm sharp. If you wish to play league please arrive before 5:20pm. As usual, the cut off for general groups is 5pm. We will also be banking all payouts aside from the ace pot. All weekly winnings will be tracked on our standings page and all money will be paid out at the bonanza or shortly after if you are not in attendance there. With the new registration cut off its safe to assume we start right at 5:30 but I'll still yell a start anyway.

Two ace pots with $250 each and we will continue to build the third pot tonight.

Two ace pots! One with $250 and another with $90 plus tonight's added money.

I'll also take this opportunity to let you know that Mass Development (which manages recreation on Devens among other things) is currently not very happy with us disc golfers. Complaints are coming in to them about the amount of trash left on Antietam field this weekend. They are also concerned that the trash that does make it into the bin is mostly alcohol related. We aren't supposed to be drinking in this public area so let's be smart and leave no trace behind.
