It was about this time last year that I was introduced to the fair sport of disc golf. I was visiting Pasadena CA on business, and happened to call up a friend to see if he wanted to get together to rehash old times. He said he was busy, but as an after-thought, asked me if I could give him a ride, to Oak Grove Park. "Sure" I told him. Little did I know that this affirmative answer would change my life. He was waiting outside his place with what appeared to be a gym type bag and 3 "frisbees". The bait was cast and I was about to bite. It didn't take much to set the hook.

Needless to say, I fell immediately, deeply, in love. I couldn't get enough.

Oak Grove is a beautiful course in winter, 70-80 Farenheit days and long cool evenings. Playing through 150 year old Oak trees and well groomed grounds. Each week day morning @ dawn the work force arrives and picks up trash, lays down mulch and takes care of the fairways. This is one of the most well maintained courses that I have ever played at.

Cement tee pads and multiple pole positions are well complemented by panoramic views of the Sierra Madre mountains, sweeping views of the arroyos, proximity to JPL and LaCanada. This course also offers fun and challenging holes, including teeing over water, blind tees, interesting mandatories, and elevation changes. You can expect daily money rounds, dollar dubs, weekend and monthly competions.

The regular crowd can be a little standoffish at first, you know, locals only...blah, blah...just make a couple of decent throws and you're in. A lot of these guys and girls have been playing for 20, 25 or more years at this park, but they still respect a well thrown drive or a solid putt.

They say that this is "where it all began", that this is the first permanent disc golf course. It certainly has roots.

I highly recommend visiting this course, but only in the off season. Too hot and dusty in the summer. I've played a lot of the west coast courses and have the best memories of this beautiful course.
