TRASH!!

Post by nik »

Dennis I wish i knew you were going to be out there working last weekend. I did not become a discussion member till tuesday of last week so i did not know you would be doing work to the course. I went there to play this morning and it looks great!!! hole 12 is so much better now i hit threes every time now!! sence i was not the last weekend today when i was there today i took a garbage bag with me on my way through the course i picked up about a half a bag of beer bottles and cans along with a bunch of other junk. I was really surprise to see how much trash was out there. on my second time through i found more but i did not have my bag with me so i just put it neer a basket of by the tee. next time i go play i will bring a bag again. I wouldn't kill other people to do the same. that course is offered to us for free the least people could do is pick up after them selves. I realize that all the garbage is not just from disc golfers but i know that the beer cans probally are. I was wondering who is responsible for emptying the garbage cans on the course that are all filled up if it is up to us the players next time i am there i will carry them up to the dumpster at hole ten and dump them out. I also might bring a new can or two and some signs telling people to carry in carry out it is gonna suck if we loose our course cause of the mess out in those woods. who is responsible for cleaning up that parking lot where we park it was covered in trash also today, I did not clean that up though. It looked like alot of trash from the food that the football teams sell when they play there. Is pop warnere the only one who sells food there or does the high school too? I also wanted to ask you if it would be ok if i was to bring out some new blue and white ribbon to remark some of the tees? well the course was awesome today i hope we can have another work day before the snow flies and i will definetly try to be there.

hey nik, thanks. It's always great to hear of others getting excited about the course and thanks, on behalf of everyone here, for doing your part. the trash situation is slowly taking it's course. I agree that the number of beer cans is out of control and that those responsible should step up and bring them to the Dover recycle center that's onlyabout one mile away. i too wish that those who bring things to the course could also take said things back with them when they leave. apparently, that's not going to happen so it has been our effort to strategically place the few receptacles available to studder almost every other hole while keeping the locations easily accessible for the parks and recreation department to retrieve. the problem there is that it's often a different crew that maintains them and not every group knows to empty them. and now that summer has past they will be there even less often and the burden becomes that much more ours. we do, however, have permission to grab another barrel from the field house area and i have been meaning to do so. up until recently there hasn't been a way to transport them to the proper locales. it was either rolling them, as i've done before, or to haul them with my car (where which they won't fit) there is now a wheel barrow out there to use or maybe someones pickup would work as well be we still need more than one person to lift them. some how they fell off the priority list but thanks to your inspiration we'll be trying to get that done.
there is also quite a bit of old trash as well. there's litter that got there long ago and that we are now unearthing. for that stuff, i feel it'll be some time and a few more 'Earth Days" before we get it all cleared.
as far as the parking area, i believe it is now primarily the responsibility of the high school to maintain it. a bunch of that stuff has been blown in from various surrounding places such as high school kids, passing cars, and recent construction. all examples are present in the small pile accumulated by Corey last week at tee one. it's a small pile with a variety of stuff.
and in regards to your blue ribbon request i say 'heck ya'. i do, however plan to anchor more one foot high 4x4 tee post in the ground soon and get the tee areas looking more like holes ten and eighteen.
again, thanks! it sounds as though you are enjoying the course and hope to see you at the many work days we'll be having before winter hits.

Dennis thanks for your reply. the next time i am there i will take care of dumping the garbage my buddy has a pick up or i might be able to get them in to my trunk either way i will get it done. I am going try to come out on saturday in the afternoon. I also have access to those wooden spikes you were using, I am a framer and am building a deck this week and will cut angles on the end of the peices of wood so they go right in. I will leave some up there i'll let you know where when i bring them up. I am going to send an email to the high school and see what happens. Have a great day.

hey nik, i’ll TRY to meet you saturday if I can. i have a key to the gate and we can utilize the dumpster between tees 13 and 18 to get rid of that stuff. and since your offering up your truck do you think we could use it to relocate a couple barrels? and as far as those 4x4 "spikes", they are actually scrap pieces left over from cutting the tee signs. they don't need to be angled as they weren't pounded into the ground but rather held in 1' to 3' deep depending upon the location(rocky locations, higher traffic areas, and vandalism were all factors). 1" holes were drilled at one end of the post and they’re anchored into the ground with 1” wooden dowels/sticks that now protrude 3”+ out from opposing sides at the bottom. holes were cut with a post digger, then refilled and thoroughly compacted firm. top it with a little blue or white paint that I have and we got tee boxes. the process does sound like overkill but it has been the most successful method thus far and the post size is a much safer one than the thin wooden stakes that were used for so long. SO, by all means scrounge what you can for lengths but cutting the angles probably won't be necessary. and in regards to where to stash them, there is a scrap pile just behind the shed between holes nine and ten(near the basketball hoop).

welcome sign???

Post by Dennis Grzywacz »

no worries but, again, thanks for the initiative. neil and i will be out there again friday and will probably have his john deer 4x4 to take care of that stuff anywho. in regards to marking the paths; please, by all means, do what it is that your going to do but please be careful not to be too too obvious to the point of obtrusiveness. one of the major underlying themes we've tried to keep throughout the construction process was keeping the design subtle on the landscape and public environment . remember that in order for you to play it NOW, you yourself had to have once been able to find your way. keep in mind also that there are arrows out there already. those missing are gone because of bored vandals and there are replacements.

one final note is that we hope to soon have a welcome sign at the first tee. i've already made a large poster sized course map to use and hope to costruct something of a scorecard box to go with it. again the map is huge and it's ready to post. what we really need for the poster is the actual 'welcome' SIGN STRUCTURE ITSELF, something to mount the map to. we have no particular design in mind but to copy the dimensions from those found at state parks, allowing enough room for additional posts and announcements. did you say you were A FRAMER :?:     :P :) :D

ya i am a framer and i will bring home some scrap wood to build a info booth. I have some shingles for the roof too i can build it next weekend if you want. If you could tell me the dementions of the map so i have some kind of idea the size i need to build it. Is there any power there maybe at the rec house? but any way that will be no problem I am looking foward to doing it. what i might do if you can give me the dementions that you would like it built i will build it at home them take it apart so all i have to do is assemble it. let me know

THE KIOSK!!!

Post by Dennis Grzywacz »

hey nik, kick ass!!! i really do get pumped when others get involved with this. there's a certain appreciation for it. ANYWAY, the map is vertically 2.5' x3'. we will be giving it a sort of frame for added protection which may bulk it up even more. so a suggestion would be to give it at least 4'-5' high and at least 3.5'- 4.5' wide for the map alone, plus additional space for announcements, posts, and course information. also keep in mind that the course map does not have holes 4 nor 5 on it. instead they will require some additional space (1'-2') to squeeze them beside the lower right corner of the map. i also had an idea to maybe make it in the shape of an "L" with a right angle to it in order maximize hanging space while being discrete with the scenery. what do you think? or should we just keep it one flat plane. if you have questions please e-mail me at dentistdog@yahoo.com . we can exchange phone numbers and talk positioning and concrete. in regards to the question about available power out at the park? we don't have acces to the building but can certainly bust out the cordless power fun. hope to hook up soon...

ALWAYS a work in progress...

Post by Dennis Grzywacz »

hey great weekend fellahs. by far one of the most productive yet. neil and myself were mad men on the back nine friday while nik choreographed his skills building the structure of what has now become the welcome kiosk. now located at the first tee, it only has the course map posted on it momenterily and the intent is to 'dress it up' further as more materials are salvage. AWESOME JOB NIK! it really does look and function GREAT! and i must say that my course map looks kick ass in the frame that neil created but the kiosk is what sells it. THANKS NEIL!!!

as stated earlier in this thread, we replaced some tee markers, while neil went nuts on some roots etc with his new 4 x 4 john deer, and we even had time to install two more "B" sleeves for holes 2 & 6. these baskets will probably be relocated to their new locals some time this morning but because we have yet to come up with a method to indicate which placement is actually being played, "A" or "B", they may go back to the original "A" placement before too long. Anyway, all those interested should come check out the improvements and play a much more open back nine. :P

on behalf of ALL,

THANKS all.

ps bridges for the smaller brook crossings are in the works. and say your 'goodbyes' now to that tree in the center of hole eleven, up on the landing, as it probably will not be there for too many weekends more...

You guys are doing a great job out there! As soon as my life calms down a bit, I'll be back out. What's the word on tag league now that the sun is dropping earlier?

fall is here. come get your fix!!!

Post by Dennis Grzywacz »

thanks for the good words brian. these days tag tee time seems to be about 4 o'clock and will shift to saturdays when the clocks turn back. here's a site with more info you could reference http://www.discgolfcourses.info/content/view/27/30/

and john, how many baskets you ask? it's been a long time since you've been here huh? :( again, the above reference, or earlier in this 'topic thread', will explain it better. in the end we've got 18 holes while we work indirectly towards more.

shoot! sunday it'll be...

Post by Dennis Grzywacz »

shoot. I told a bunch of people for saturday but i agree, family come first. but as a result, we will probably make more of tomorrow and work a little dirtier since saturday won't allow us too. i'm guessing we'll be out there earlier than 10am, we're aiming for 9am. (hey sean, great to see you here. saturday will probably start about the same time)

as i said, i have told a few people about saturday and consequently we'll probably still be going out anyway but don't expect it to be as such a big work day as origionally thought. apparently sunday morning, however, should be a 'push hard for a short while' day as i have to work that night, won't have too much time availabe, and will already be exhausted after yet another productive weekend. anyway hope to see you all out there.
