Hi Patrick,

Let's get together sometime to pool our resources.....how far up past the top of the 'open' hill (top of the ski lift)does the Memorial Park property go? I figured out a couple possible layouts avoiding pools/baseball fields, but would go across the access road leading up the hill.. Was unsure how far into the woods the park owned......I would definitely be up for helping with a proposal. I think we could at least do a rec friendly (with advanced/pro tees too) 9-hole course there, just with what I knew about....Let me know. Feel free to contact me at: sherwinartglass@comcast.net also.

The Retreat has GOBS of land.....just didn't know what might be usable for activities.....Heck, the whole Country Club (ball golf course) is on 'Retreat' land......

Haven't heard back from S.I.T. yet....I will contact them again and let you know.

My first time on skiis was at Memorial Park. There is some cool terrain around the area for sure. I always thought something at Fort Dummer State Park would be really neat. In Oregon a bunch of golf courses I played on utilized weekly mowed park areas for golf holes. There are some really cool features and woods at Fort Dummer also AND its directly off 91.

Of course, its always good idea to set up 9 holes first before expanding to 18 holes. Seen and played few "test" 9 holes out there and it was pulled out or moved to elsewhere after receiving poor feedback from the community or the higher ups.

I, too, wonder about the property lines at Memorial Park but if you look at Google map and you can see the park's lines. The downside is that the hills on both sides and bottom are taken by baseball fields. The only thing left is the top front main hill and the back narrow side through the woods. I heard that area was used by mountain bikers.

S.I.T. students could use some DG exposures. Same goes for BUHS as well.

Will need to get hold of Retreat people but need to do proposal first.

Discuss more on email :)

Did briefly checked out Fort Dummer (yes, its right off from 91) when I first moved here in 2010 and I find it a total wooded course that will require a lot of work to be made. I'm trying to find recreational level course that are easy to throw and and easy to find as well (bad for disc business, I know...). So, I got Austine for that (nice to have a very supporting employer to allow me to build it on the property!!). Memorial and Retreat are also good choice for all levels. Fort Dummer could be the champion-caliber course which you will require to thread through the trees.

Ah, a flashback to Basil Marella Park. Gotta to love to hate this course. Have witnessed Basil grown and transformed from the beginning of its creation.

Umm...I'll put Fort Dummer on my Brattleboro/Windham county DG course wish list. 8-)

I too checked out Fort Dummer when I first moved back home and was in a DGolf frenzy.....IT seemed it would be very tight indeed, and/or need a lot of effort to get going. There again I never went ahead to get maps and really go exploring.....sounds like there are a few of us willing to check it out some more. Maybe a late Spring meeting? Chris, how often do you come down from Burlington? Patrick, if you are in Bratt, we could meet sometime. Sundays are usually good for me, or late afternoons. I'm headed over to Keene today to check out the course there with Mark at 3pm..... Psyched that there is finally Disc around here....on the move!

Oh yeah, there is movement in Chester, VT too. I am meeting with a couple guys there in the next couple weeks! We have a location and it sounds like the town Parks people are in! I will start a thread when i have more info.

I LIVE in downtown Brattleboro and Austine are like 3 min away from my place. Text me at 8022756492 for meet up. FYI, sometimes on Sundays, I'm in town and sometimes I'm not.

Anyway, one thing at a time...

First, I really need to finish Austine course with tees, signs, and fairways clean ups before I can move on to another DG course projects.

Know anyone that can loan me a chainsaw for me to use for about two weeks or less?
Small chainsaw will do. Need to trim up many low-lying tree branches and couple thin trees. Pile them up and have it wood-chipped for the tees. I have handled chainsaws before. I just don't want to buy it for my own. I live in apartment.

When Austine are done, then I would like to host Brattleboro Beginner Disc Golf League on Sunday afternoons at 1pm or 2pm sometime in April.

3 bucks to play. $1-Ace $1-CTP $1-Course improvement. The winner gets a disc (used or new). 8-)

Patrick,

I have a chain saw you can borrow--needs a little TLC, when using, but it's been working okay for me. Happy to come help, if you want to organize a work day too. I am only 1/2 hour upstream...

clarification on "Brattleboro beginning league"....for beginners, or do you mean a new start-up Bratt league open to anyone? Thanks.

I understand your motivation on "one thing at a time". It's good to get something in the ground and work on getting it better, then move on. I will spearhead SIT if I have the go ahead, but could use some volunteers for work days, and like I said if you need/want help at Austine send out the word--that's what we can all do to help each other out.

Let me know!

It Is "Beginners" league that is open to anyone who wants to learn and improve on disc golfing.

Experienced players ARE welcome but please give the newbies some fun to win something.

We can do handicap method if there's enough skilled players that like to keep playing at Austine on Sunday afternoons.

Just wanted to make this league affordable for the newcomers especially local high school kids during the summer. *hint* *hint*

Hey Chris,

Your chainsaw has been giving me hard times. It came apart at every 10 or 15 minutes. Had to adjust the chains often but its doing good job cutting most of the branches.

So far two REAL disc golfers from Maine came by around 7pm (they should come earlier) and played a round from "A" Tee (long holes) and this guy (12 years experience) commented that this course is a good 9-hole course to play and have no negative feedback on its layouts but only needs TLC to make it good and permanent.

So, the course STILL need some work but its very playable course right now.

Come on over Chris and play a round or two!! You have my email

Hey Patrick,

Sorry to hear about the saw.....loose screw/nut somewhere?? Let me know when you've had enough of it; I have to hack through some stuff up here soon too. Awesome feedback on the course. Looking forward to coming down and playing a round sometime soon.

Keene walk-through on Friday. Chester, VT pre-lim walk-through Saturday....I'll keep you posted.

UPDATE!!!

Austine 9-hole course NOW HAVE SIGNS and TEES at all holes!! Come and play two different sets of tees at each holes, except for #9 and Alt tee.

The course will remain open during winter for winter golfing. Bring snowshoes if needed!!

There's possible Sunday Winter league as I have been seeing more and more people coming to play at Austine.

One guy that I met last week claimed that his friend ACED #5 from "B" Tee with a thumber two weekends ago!! That would be the 2nd Ace for Austine.

Sure Chris, we can do that.

For anyone who want to come and play the course during the week, I can be easily reach at DeafDiscGolfer(at)gmail.com. I can play rounds with you all at anytime....actually, only when I can be free. Or you CAN call my office at 802-275-5073.

The course is right behind my office building on the premises, yup, its my "personal" backyard course that I go during my lunch break on good days. 8-)

Psst, Chris, I'm thinking of creating "PROS ONLY" 9-hole course with some Par 4 or 5 that will only weave through the backwoods at Austine, no open bombing fields. Meaning that when you stand on 1A Tee, you will face two choices of either start off original 9-holes or start off with Pro's 9-holes layouts that will weave thorough around the woods and back to 1A tee to finish off the rest of regular 9 holes. In this way, this course can become a full 18 hole course with optional 9 holes for beginners. That's something that I am working on for Spring/Summer 2013. You and anyone are welcome to be part of the PROS hole designs that need some solid par 4 or 5. FYI, the backwoods are full of fallen trees and it will be A LOT OF WORK to clear out but there's plenty good fairways that be created.

Yep, I will need some moula to buy 9 more baskets to make this work.... :drunken:

Sounds great Patrick...and very promising! I would love to come assist. Keep me posted. If I see a nice afternoon in the near future, I may send you an e-mail so we can play a round. Hope all is well. Best, Chris
p.s. Was driving by Fort Dummer the other day, on I-91.....what are your thoughts on the possibilities there, for a SoVT course? Any ideas on what the acreage, or what the 'powers that be' there would be open to that sort of thing?

Well...you can go solo if you want or just stop by my office and I'll take a break from work and play a round with ya. The course is literally behind my office! 8-)

There's few local people starting to play Austine course more often.

Can't wait to expand the course to become 18+ holes course to have future actual tournaments (NEFA & PDGA) in the southern VT!!

Its in the DGCR...http://www.dgcoursereview.com/course.php?id=5120

Too lazy to find it? Here's GPS: 42.843157,-72.576189

Please study the course map before going out there.

FYI, I will be leaving to travel up northern VT on Wed. afternoon at around 3pm.

Tee signs are in place. Snows around tees have been cleared (not good enough but its enough).

Please feel free to explore the course. 8-)

I would not consider this worth the three plus hour drive, unless you plan to play at Keema's or North Hampton also. I had the chance to play the nine hole course and was underwhelmed. But that said, it is a new course and you might enjoy it.

Three plus hours?? From where??

It takes me just 50 minutes from Brattleboro to Athol/Tully Rock.

Thanks for the blunt feedback about the course. Hope you can come back when its becomes 18 holes in the future.

played the full 2 round loop of 9 with Cupcake and Pat

55 cupcake
56 titan
pat did not keep score

I thought it was fun..once the full true 18 go in I trust the course will be a lil gem
Good mix of terrain and shot selection and some good lil birdy holes..some true par 4's

I will be back to try the course out when no snow is around..and I would recomend people checking it out no matter the drive time...a small crew has put in some work and that deserves some love

Thanks Titan and Cupcake for visiting the course yesterday. Yes, please do come back when the snows are all gone!!

Yup, this course were only created by two people. Don't mind to have more people to help out to make this course to be more playable for all levels. This course can be awesome place to play night golf during the summer.

Agreed. Those local people are starting coming out under the rock to play those course. I bet more will come when spring/summer arrives.

I will need to build and mount the kiosk this spring to post up the course map and information about NEFA and so forth.

Pssst!!!!

Another 9-hole technical tight course is currently being developed on another school property in Newfane (about 8 min north of Brattleboro).

This course is designed by me and few inputs from two school teachers who just got hit by disc golf bug after playing at Austine!!

This new flat course is good for players who wants to improve accurate shots and approaches.

Three holes are out in the open and the rest are in the woods. It should be all Par 3.

Will post info at DGCR when the course is completed sometime by end of this Spring or mid-summer.

It's SO NICE to have another course in southern VT!!

Yeah, I'm doing workdays on both Austine and new course too!! Aack!! :?

Hi Patrick,
What is the scoop with your Austine COurse? I have heard the school was shutting down? Is it still just open for public play on weekends and after school hours m-f? If not, I may make a road trip soon, are you doing league on Tuesday, what time? all right, no more questions 8-)
I'd be a lot better if those trees didn't get in the way.
