Welcome to the state, Allen :)

I'd imagine Les hasnt put Tolland on the pdga site yet only because of the flux the course has been in, but once the tee/basket locations are really settled I'm sure he'll put something up there. Good mention though, honestly he may have just neglected to put it up there hehe.

Also if you're around UCONN, you owe it to yourself to get over to Wickham Park in Manchester before it closes for the season when October is done. Wickham is generally considered CT's premiere course and you should check it out before the baskets get pulled until next April when the park will re-open for next season.

Tourney on 11/25

Post by David Wollner »

Yes, on 11/25 if you have time before then please help by picking up sticks and clear the fairways. We have a great deal to do but it's coming together and should be a fun and challanging event.

Volunteers

Post by Les Sinnock »

Still looking for more volunteers for Nov. 11th to help with Tee pads.

To those that seldom help out - here's your chance to give back to the disc golf community that helps make all of your free time enjoyable.

Feel good about your home course by putting a little time in. Hey, for a game that is largely free, it sure gives us a lot of pleasure. You will feel a real bond with the course if you spend a little time making improvements.

And did I mention free beer. Yes, free beer. Provided by me - Arch Amber for the masses - cold and frosty. It's good for what Ales you.

After all - helpers rule !! 8)

You are in. No rec div. though. Am2 only.

On another note :

Still looking for vols for this Saturday work day.
We need to get the tee boxes set for the tournament. I am working on scorecards and other ancillaries. If I could get a commitment from a few others it would help immensly.
This will make the course a lot better for all to play from this point on and promises to not be a grueling day.
We are not doing anything too ambitious. Just general smoothing, compacting and line creation.

The tees are in. We now have official looking tees. Most are filled with stone dust. If you are there - do us a favor and smooth out the dust when you are done teeing and help by compacting this down each time. this will help set the dust and hopefully keep it somewhat level.

We picked up an inordinate amount of trash out there. Please help by not littering for one and two please help by picking up trash. If you see anyone littering please chide them for doing this.

Lastly, we removed the hanging dead trees on hole two and we removed most of the "impalers" still remaining from "Hatchett boys" bad job. If you see anyone cutting down any further trees please beat them over the head for me.

The course is now deemed officially done. I will register these courses with NEFA and PDGA today.

Special thanks go to the following people for a hard days work out there yesterday (and I mean hard grueling manual labor) : myself, April, David Wollner, Ditterman, Greg Piretti, Mike Ellis, Bill Stapleton, Steve Dumas and Jack (?). Many thanks to these folks. :)

Now that the tee boxes have been in place and downed trees removed from hole #2, how does everyone like/dislike the improvements to the course ??

Also, there are still spots open for this Saturdays tournament. Feel free to post on the Tournaments site or just show up on Saturday. :)

I've been playing the course all week as well (once with Cassion for nine holes, which was arguably the worst nine holes I've ever played), and it's an absolute blast. The only thing that seems sort of dubious is the walk from hole 10 to 11 (I think; it's in that range, there's like a virtual pond between the two holes), but besides that, great course. Are you working score card design or anything? My buddy's a graphic designer who'd probably be able to draw one up for ya quick.

Cheers,
Alex D.

For those that didn't come to the tournament on Nov. 25th, just a quick mention regarding recent improvements to the course.

There is now a rock bridge that extends through the wet area behind the basket on 10 to the path that leads to 11. #14 now has a firm rock bridge crossing the stream.

The tee boxes are holding up pretty well since the work day. If people can make a concerted effort to level out the stone dust and stomp it flat occasionally, it will help in the long run. We will be back out to add more stone dust when the course is relatively dry again.

Here is a recent communication I got back from Tom Ainsworth, head of recreation for the town of Tolland.

Hi Les,

Thanks for the update. Glad things went well with the tourney. I haven’t made it out there since thanksgiving but I’ll check it out. Speaking of checks I had a credit on the portajohn bill so I tore up your check. I would like to add some of the original sponsors to the first run of scorecards. Like the Willimantic Brewery, and a couple others. If the holes are laid out the way you want them and you have someone that can draw the holes with distances, etc. I will get individual hole signs made up over the winter. Plus rules for use, etc. I also have the extra basket that I want to put up for practice that would be visible from the parking lot.

Thanks for all the hard work you, Dave and the others have put in to make it work.

Tom

So this means that I have a credit for $60 to go towards the course, since the portajohn was free for the tourney. Has anyone out there got the time and skills to do some graphic arts work for us (I can pay you $60 for the work care of the refund I got, or maybe you might like to be listed on the scorecard as a sponsor)? I would like it if the signs were really spanky looking. Maybe some new look that hasn't been seen out there yet. Any ideas? As Tom eluded, if we can get artwork done for the tee signs, he will get the signs made for each of the tee's.
Any ideas for where to put the practice basket ?

Les,

What are the chances we can get a garbage can or 3 up there to alleviate the trash issue, the "Lost Disc Basket" is getting pretty full and unless someone is throwing Mike's Hard Lemonade (great for tomahawks, but glass is not a particularly durable material) its mostly garbage.

If there was one at 1 and one at 18 it wouldn't be difficult for the parks service to empty every week or so. I don't know if the city would be willing to empty it regularly but its just an idea

Let's just pickup the dead limbs and clear the fairways, and in the Spring consider which trees should be slaughtered! And please No Littering, Parks and Rec are not very happy. :violin: [/b]

Garbage cans would be nice. I doubt anyone here in NEFA land is littering. I'm guessing it might be the flocks of UConn students I see every thime I go there.

butts

Post by Eric Desmarais »

Dude whoever you are mister white ciggerette butt smoker,STOP throwing your butts on the ground.Unfortunately you prolly dont come here to this site.Butts are litter.
Its up to us to school players. If we cant get trash cans put in by the park then maybe we can put them in ourselves. We could empty them after/during Sun, dubz.Just an idea.
Also enogh with the burnouts its only giving D.G.ERS a bad rap.I may pout my way through the coarse but i dont take it out on the parking lot.
Play has really increased. So our efforts on maintenance must be comensurate.I really like this place and want to see it stay the way it is!!!
