A few good things about Ninigrit, AKA "The Grit", AKA "Li'l Nini"

The signs really help find your way.

A mix of some good holes in there, with a variety of pars.

Less snow then most courses this time of year. Saw bare ground on a lot of holes.

Good wind practice! Never played Nini without wind.

Thanks for having a free to play course in RI.

Shot 67 from the blues today in high wind. Was not great, but not terrible either.

Looks like we are renting a vacation home 5 minutes from Ninigret Park, RI. Are there weeknight leagues? Is Horse Farm close? Thanks for any DG or fishing info.

30 min drive between the two courses. Hit up Norm Fitzgerald to play Willow Valley.

Thanks for all the tips. East Beach RI is amazing. Clammed and kayaked the Pond. I'm bummed that I missed league at The horse farm. Ninigret Park has great fields for practice. I am too allergic to Ivy to play the course though. That whole area is really nice.

Can I find hole lengths and pars for this course anywhere? Looking to maybe come down on Labor Day.

The road is only 215 ft(not high enough) on the other hand if you can get to the top of the towers they are 400 ft.

Either way it can't be that bad, go throw a round and you will feel much better.

Had a question come up about OB at Ninigret, specifically on hole #8. According to the sign, the road is OB. Can we assume you're OB if you are beyond the road? Say you're on fairway #7. Are you OB? Or is it only if you're actually on the paved road?

Feels like a dumb question. But none of us could come to a solid conclusion.

I'm interested in the logic too, so that I might know what to determine about future unclear OB designation.

Thanks. Place looks great btw, I was there a few times in the last year, and I hadn't been there previously since 2008. It's come a long way, especially the signage. And if you're like me and have only ever played Ninigret in the summer, you ought to get down there now. The roughs are reasonable, and the bugs & poison ivy are away at their summer homes.

Thanks for the Kudos on the course...

If you read the legend on the signs with the large overall map...Hole#1...Hole #5...Hole #12...

It says that "OB" is all tar and beyond...2 meter rule...

So On hole #8... It is kind of an island hole...the only in bounds is the grass area surrounded by the road...

There also is a sand trap on this hole that is "OB"...drop zone at right back corner...

The way that I think you should play the hole by "tournament rules"...with the greatest skill challenge...

If you are throwing from the blue tee...and your drive ends up "OB"...not in the sand trap...

You should move up to the next shorter(white) tee as the drop zone...

If you throw "OB" from the white tee...You should move up to the next shorter(red) tee...as the drop zone...

If you throw "OB" from the red tee...you should move up to the sand trap drop zone...

Of course if you are playing a friendly game you could just play it where it comes to rest...

Matt, I'm sorry you feel this way and it seems like you are looking for a response. So I'll tell you what I was told 15 years ago when asked about a course I played and didn't like, if you don't like it, don't play it.
Many people don't like Ninigret but a lot do. It's not like a lot of courses out there. There's no elevation change, fairways can be tight, there are no open field bombs to throw and the rough can be rough. But it also makes you think about your throws as opposed to just chucking it in an open field. This does help when playing other courses.
I've played a lot of courses in the past 20 years, and a lot of them I didn't like either. When I started playing there was only 2 permanent courses in New England, so any course that someone takes the time and effort to put in is much appreciated. I hope some day you can also appreciate it too. Good luck with your golf game and I hope you can give Ninigret and other courses you might not like another chance.

Hey that's a really good post!

I'll say that I thought VERY negatively about Ninigret when I first played it back around 2008.

In just the last year though, I've completely done a 180° and I love the place now. Of course, it can get nasty in the summer months ... in fact my first time there, it was a hot day in August, so there's that. But it's amazing in the early spring, tell you whut. After playing it a bunch, I've realized it's got some really good challenges and variety, ... and it's got a ton of character IMO. Nothing else like it.

I thought it was the only course in RI - is there another one?

How's the PI this summer?

TC has some good points! Ninigret is rough and when it is in the mid-summer months, the PI and bugs can be just as big of a challenge. However, this was a great place to learn the game. You have to be precise with your shots or get in trouble quickly. There are a few holes that I think could be improved by pin position changes or mandatory placements, but all told, it is a fun course that I will gladly play when down in RI (between late September and early May).
