Now that kids are in school I'm thinking of trying out this new course I've been reading so much about. Is is available to play on Thursday or Friday?

If so, how is the navigation? Is it easy to figure out for a first time course player?

Available for play
Navigation should be easy arrows on almost every basket heading you in the right direction
Tee one is behind pavillion facing woods
Hole maps aren't 100% and proper distances are available on http://www.dgcoursereview.com/course.php?id=7808
I will be out tomorrow morning and Titan will be out there camping from Thursday to Saturday

yes the course is available for play Thursday and Friday
just not Saturday as the DG event will be in progress

I will be there Thursday afternoon with child though, and all day Friday w/o child, as I will be camping there all weekend

The course navigation is much better now, we have 8ft 4x4 post with hole number signs at every hole on the course, some are just leaning by tee as they need to be persuaded a bit more.

every basket has a wooden arrow under cage pointing to next tee location/trail to next tee

white wooden arrows fastened to trees with rope also are in place directing players to the next traverse

hole 1 plays behind the building/bbq pit from a skeet pad, once you are there the rest should lead you to where you need to be

please bring a beverage, the course is playing better then ever before but the terrain can provide a workout for sure!

the course is young and not broken in yet, some of the items such as benches, kiosk & kiosk items, and final tee surfaces are under construction

hope you have an enjoyable round, what I can promise is every visit you will see progress towards a polished GEM!

let us know your thoughts, good, bad or indifferent via post or pm if you prefer

sorry for the wall of text....

all footages updated here

thanks!!!!

Thanks.

New courses don't scare me. I've played Coggs and Webster Fish and Game in their early days. I like to see the progress as times goes on.

I certainly fall into the "recreation" type player so my feedback will be from that side of it.

Can't wait to check out another course in Mass! You guys are doing great work for the Rt. 2 corridor.

First of all, I want to say a big "Thank You" to Titan, Guy, and all the others that worked on this course. Without efforts of volunteers DG wouldn't be where it is today.

I almost hate "reviewing" new courses because often they take years to break in, get tweaked, and eventually become established. Please take anything I say as simply comments and observations of a new baby course. Nothing I say is meant to be critical or put down the great work you've all done. I'm simply stating what I saw.

First of all, I'm just a recreational player. Maybe once or twice a month. This is important in determining how the course looks to a target audience. For example, I went from loving to hating Buff because they decided to cater to a more advanced player. My opinions on this course may not match the audience it was designed for. Either way, this is how a "Rec Player" experienced it.

I'll start by saying I didn't particularly care for the course (NOTE: ONCE AGAIN, NO REFLECTION ON YOUR HARD WORK, JUST A LONE INDIVIDUALS PREFERENCE). It had the feeling of Holes 10-14 of Tully, which just happen to be the holes I don't care for on that course. People that love those holes are going to enjoy the course. For me, the course didn't jive with my personal taste.

I'll record my thoughts as I jotted them down. Sorry if they are kind of scattered, but it's how it went through my head as I was playing.

Hole 1: Middle of a gun range. I'm not familiar with how busy this Club is but having a hole in the middle of a gun range is unnerving to the people not from the area. My wife was ready to walk away before I shot my first throw off the tee. Also, this hole is pretty much throwing at a basket in an open field. You could easily get rid of this hole and begin at Hole 2 (making up for the missing hole later).

Tees: I'm sure this is to come, but all the tee boxes need to be framed, leveled, and compacted. I like the material, but I was afraid to twist my ankle with every throw off the tee. This meant I couldn't plant and rotate my front foot, threw every tee shot to the left, and generally frustrated me the entire time.

Hole design: Seemed to be a lot baskets placed right in front of you throwing through a field of trees. I call it "ping pong" disc golf. Throw the disc, wack a tree, repeat. There may be a fairway somewhere but I couldn't see it. Even my wife who doesn't play but comes with me often commented on this.

Hole 7: Liked the basket location. Tee was angled off of the basket and probably could be put somewhere else to make the hole better. Straight shot to a nice basket location but that's about it.

Hole 8: Felt long just for the sake of being long. This hole could easily be split into two holes to make up for getting rid of Hole 1.

Hole 9: The tee pad goes uphill. It needs to be level.

Hole 10: There needs to be some stairs or a way to get down to the basket easier. The basket is in a cool spot but it's hard to reach down and get a disc that may be at the base of the basket.

Hole 11: This I think could be a cool hole. I'd make the area between the rocks and the rock wall OB to create a "virtual pond" to throw over. I think this would add a little challenge to another straight ahead hole.

Hole 12: I had a feeling this hole was created just to put the basket on the rock. "Hey cool, we have this rock. We should put the basket there. How does the player throw there though? I don't know, just through the woods I guess." Makes it feel gimmicky.

Hole 13-17: More of the same... nothing stood out.

Hole 18: Liked this hole. Reminded me of Hole 9 at Devens. Some may say gimmick but not every hole needs to be a bomb. Sometimes they need to be about placement. I would make the area outside the logs around the basket OB. Make it an island hole.

Other thing to note, might as well take down all the laminated hole maps. Most of them didn't help at all are some are even vastly off. They caused more confusion than they helped.

Finally, something to think about in course design is that all the great courses have that something "special". Something that draws you to the course. Devens has the elevation, West Thompson is a beautiful park like setting for when I want a nice stroll, Tully (minus 10-14) makes great use of the dam, overflow area, and access roads. These courses have identities, they have personalities. RF&G needs to find that one thing that makes it shine.

Once again, THANK YOU! I have no doubt that people will enjoy this course once complete. I may even return in a year or so to see how it has developed. I wish you the best of luck and applaud you on all your efforts.

I guess you didn't read the conversation or my post very well. Titan asked for honest feedback and I gave it. I also stated that this is just a personal opinion based on the style that I play and does not reflect at all on the hard work they have done. I didn't care for it but I'm sure there are many others that will love it. I hope they had a great turnout for the event and wish them and the course the best of luck in the future.

Why must everyone love every course all the time? That's why we have such a great variety of courses, there is something for everyone and all styles of play.

This is a POV we wanted! TY, and yes REC may enjoy another course

Hole 1: Middle of a gun range. I'm not familiar with how busy this Club is but having a hole in the middle of a gun range is unnerving to the people not from the area. My wife was ready to walk away before I shot my first throw off the tee. Also, this hole is pretty much throwing at a basket in an open field. hole is bye bye come Nov 1st ish for many reasons..and some of the ones you listed while safe it concerns people and we have a spot between 14-15, and yes parking kiosk, practice basket will all go nearish basket 1 currently. CAlso Event flow it sucks and yes does not fit course
Tees: I'm sure this is to come, but all the tee boxes need to be framed, leveled, and compacted. I like the material, but I was afraid to twist my ankle with every throw off the tee. This meant I couldn't plant and rotate my front foot, threw every tee shot to the left, and generally frustrated me the entire time.

yes, just three weeks ago they were bare natural forest earth, we now consider the current state as phase 1, timbers are still green, freshly milled they need to be treated waiting, plus we have leveling, more fill, and benches, raking to do in meantime we can't wait as well for sure,no sugar coating that

Hole design: Seemed to be a lot baskets placed right in front of you throwing through a field of trees. I call it "ping pong" disc golf. Throw the disc, wack a tree, repeat. There may be a fairway somewhere but I couldn't see it. Even my wife who doesn't play but comes with me often commented on this.

the fairways are def for an advanced player...believe it or not they are actually openish, and were pured by some great shooters this weekend...the course demands power and control for sure. If you spray all day(yes early tee stages promote that)

Hole 7: Liked the basket location. Tee was angled off of the basket and probably could be put somewhere else to make the hole better. Straight shot to a nice basket location but that's about it.

tee needs to be off access road, and property lines are relevant there, this hole plays great and actually as I watched the design translated perfectly to reality

Hole 8: Felt long just for the sake of being long. This hole could easily be split into two holes to make up for getting rid of Hole 1.

this is our next project, to tweak, possibly shorten a bit, yes it started as being long to be long as when the course was 9holes and before we split 18 into 2 holes and removed a hole after 3, this extended to the trail for exit...Guy and I both agree we can tweak much better.
I did watch a sick chain out for 2 on this hole at event John Bon,unreal he played this hole perfectly and almost was rewarded with an eagle! highlight of the round for me to watch, great thing is we have 3-4 options here

Hole 9: The tee pad goes uphill. It needs to be level.

yes very true indeed, I actually hate this hole and I will be lobbing hard when we tweak nine to adjust this hole and take the super uphill walk more lateral, thus why we didn't go nuts yet on tee, also tractor had difficult time getting there..a rocklayer prevented ease of access
Hole 10: There needs to be some stairs or a way to get down to the basket easier. The basket is in a cool spot but it's hard to reach down and get a disc that may be at the base of the basket.

this is our newest adjustment, and we will address this hole soon as well! I actually have only seenhole 1 time and never played it yet, was not there for this workday actually and many at event loved pin location and anny shot so we will evolve thisHole 11: This I think could be a cool hole. I'd make the area between the rocks and the rock wall OB to create a "virtual pond" to throw over. I think this would add a little challenge to another straight ahead hole.

an idea that has been pondered!!!!!!,and I think eventually will be implemented once we get to descriptive signage rather just number markings
Hole 12: I had a feeling this hole was created just to put the basket on the rock. "Hey cool, we have this rock. We should put the basket there. How does the player throw there though? I don't know, just through the woods I guess." Makes it feel gimmicky.

yes and no here....that rock is something I have been looking for over the years...we have a backup plan if/when the left edge gets picked cleaned by play....but actually this hole is easily 2's with a long straight natural fade shot...as it was by a few top players this weekend...we have a shorter tee area as well we have explored...I think this is just a more advanced hole then a REC player enjoys...

Hole 13-17: More of the same... nothing stood out.

back to the tully comparison, this is def a rec to adv/pro or aspiring lower am mentality these holes are tough to execute and that is by design..this is the home stretch where top players willhave to step it up or they fall victim to the course and field
Hole 18: Liked this hole. Reminded me of Hole 9 at Devens. Some may say gimmick but not every hole needs to be a bomb. Sometimes they need to be about placement. I would make the area outside the logs around the basket OB. Make it an island hole.

yes this is an island green...the lower edge logs on acces road and a rope running up the left edge fromthereis safe for the layup and 3 take..but after the logs all outside of that circle is OB and certain situations we will make it a true island green, this hole is super fun allows for a 1-5 scoring spread and can be critical in a last hole showdown..great choice to split 18 and create this hole

Other thing to note, might as well take down all the laminated hole maps. Most of them didn't help at all are some are even vastly off. They caused more confusion than they helped.

yes, really old descriptions and is on list soon to remove/replace and anchor to new tee poles

RF&G needs to find that one thing that makes it shine.

after this weekend RFG found its place...I knew and have preached on what RFG has that almost allothers don't have is the Venue!
we had camping, temp glow course, openpit seasoned slow cooked chicken BBQ, parking, indoor bathrooms, kitchen, adult beverages, plenty of land, other activities, member support, the list goes on and on...

to me the course could be anything it's almost irrelevant actually, it has always been about what RFG can offer that others can't...this weekend everyone there I think will say yuuup
also it is very private currently and early am and evening its very scenic up there..in the after noon the forest provides great shade, and once we get benches it will be nice to relax and chillin forest, much like highlands of conway

Once again, THANK YOU! I have no doubt that people will enjoy this course once complete. I may even return in a year or so to see how it has developed. I wish you the best of luck and applaud you on all your efforts.

please do, after this weekend and club members interest in DG, I am going to lobby for a lower 5 holes to be added and use holes 1(even when wemove as we will use practice basket)---3 then short walk to 18, walking to 2's tee and having a shot back as well

this will give recs somelayout that better fits, get club members to start playing, etc etc etc

To Steve Thanks!!!!,and I asked for brutal honesty from a REC POV

Matt, Thanks for taking YOUR TIME and taking notes and giving great feedback from a population we wanted to hear from!!!!
Many of things you listed are very relevant and on ourminds/list as well

with getting ready for event we have been pushing for playability and will get back to tweaks and polishing after a short break to regroup

You are correct not every course is for everyone!!!!! and never will be I completely agree

I appreciate and respect your thoughts!!!

Next year stop backup, while some of the holes may never fit your ability or mindset on the game I assure you that you will notice leaps and bounds on the current product presented

this weekend at event John BON 51 52 103 on the day wowzer out there right?

I sure will Titan. Can't wait to see the lower holes. I think these lower holes will help attract people from the club to get into the sport. Then they'll have a real ownership of the course.

I agree the area is perfect for a tournament. Course and facilities all in one!

so very true, we are at the point where this needs to happen
If you make one event next year please attend the Temp Glow Course on lower area this time next Fall, it really was magical

It's such a misconception that a REC player can't provide solid feedback
You presented your thoughts concise and constructively

Thanks and hope to play a round sometime with you!

Hey Titan,

Heading out to Brattleboro Saturday afternoon and the lady friend afforded me time to play only 1 of the three destinations out there on the way (Tully, Flatrock, or RFG). Real excited to get out west for the first time in almost 3 years. Lady hasn't played any of the three ever. I haven't played the new gem you're working on, and would love to check it out if you think someone could navigate fairly easily. Essentially, where would a semi-regular lady have the most fun these days?

eric,

really sorry toinform you that the course is closed all weekend for the championships skeet shoot
they were setting up as we were rolling out today

I would suggest if going to Bratt,

to check out Oteerbrook in Keene, basically on the way
the nine hole course in brat isn't that bad as well

sucks would have loved to give you the grand tour!

tully sucks, and flatrock is playing amazing right now with all tees installed

edit, the lady would love OtterBrook!

While I was sorry I couldn't check out the newest creation, Otter Brook was one of the better disc experiences we've had and by far our favorite course in New Hampshire. Good navigation with just enough signs between holes for a new player to not waste time lost in the woods. Variety of shots with hole length that doesn't crush your soul if you have an errant shot. The lady went 3-2-3 to start and was hooked. Great work out there buddy.

Am I correct in assuming that the shooting area and the disc golf area are completely separate, and
neither will interfere with the other (except if loud noises bother you)?

James, Only a couple days a year there is interference.
Normally there is no interference.
The shooting range is below hole 17.(shooting range is in field and disc golf course is left and up on a hill)

Guy and I walked the course today to scout for upcoming burn season

Besides thin icy layer throughout woods the course looks amazing truly pristine and scenic out there

we start burning after 1/15 and will have all the tee area melted off for play during the process

stay tuned for burn dates and times any extra help is encouraged to come join the fun

I think after burning, more tee work and some signs/kiosk this place will be fully functional and a gem for people to visit
