It's official ---> Saturday August 11th is Park City Celebration day at Veteran's Park in Bridgeport. We are expecting about 100 people of all ages, especially teens. The City of Bridgeport is hosting an "open house" to showcase recent upgrades to this park. This includes disc golf and the Discovery Museum's new Adventure Park (zip line and ropes course). This event is part of Mayor Finch's summer-long series of park events. He is working on a long-range plan to rehabilitate parks across the city so they will be ready for the next generation.

We are happy to be a part of this celebration and excited that all our hard work will be on display. And the very good news is that the City is helping with the cost to replace the basket and attempting to tame the beast by cleaning the overgrown sections of the fairways. YIPPIE

I don't know all the details, but disc golf will be played all day with clinics and games at a designated time. We might even have $ for lowest rounds.

It would be nice to have a nice nefa showing. Anyone going to be around and want to help out and play of course. The course should be looking awesome.

Met with the Parks Dept maintenance crew this morning at the park. Showed them all the areas that need to be mowed and weedwacked. Let's keep our fingers crossed that it all gets done before the Celebration Day on August 11th. Also decided about how to secure the new basket on 16...it's going in very soon!

Played the course today. There is a ground bees nest about 1/2 down the right hand side of 3's fairway. I placed a long log pointing in the general area. Luckily I was not bitten this time, Tom wasn't so lucky.

I apologize for not taking better care of the weeds on hole 11. After the GHdgO I will do the wack.

Thanks for the heads up. Didn't see it there yesterday, but definitely want to get rid of it before Saturday.

Unfortunately due to weather, this event has been postponed.
The rescheduled date has not been determined.

But the good news is that the Park Dept mowed the field and all the edges of the field which include portions of Hole 1, 10, 11, and 18!
Additionally they mowed portions of 13, 14, & 17! Woo Hoo

I followed them last night and cleared the short tees on 14, 17, and the green/fairway areas of 13. Still loads of work to do, but the course is looking much better and is very playable now.

And thanks to Matt for picking up the basket in Hartford and then installing it all by his lonesome.
I'm hesitant to post about this on Facebook for fear that the thieves will be inspired again.

Okay...BIG Update...****

We have 2.5 weeks until the Fairfield County Open tournament. It is time to pitch in and make our baby look pretty.
So...if you have adopted a hole, any help there would be appreciated. I just finished a tour of the course and actually think IT DOESN'T LOOK THAT BAD.

But there is considerable trash everywhere and lots of fallen branches. During your casual rounds carry a bag of trash and/or throw the storm debris (branches) off the fairway.

We will be having WORKDAYS on the next 2 Saturdays 10/22 & 10/29 which will consist of working on (12, 13, 15), then play. [special rule during play = whoever is BOB carries the trash bag, and each group spends 2-5 minutes cleaning up branches and throwing away trash...per hole].

Here is my list per hole:
1) weedwack a little 50%DONE
2) put in a real tee (yay!) DONE
5) flatten tee DONE
7) fill/fix tee DONE
8) clean up a couple broken trees DONE
9) flatten tee DONE
12) weedwack and remove some bushes DONE
13) weedwack a lot, remove vines and hanging branch DONE
15) weedwack, cut limbs at 1st gap, fix tee DONE
16) clean up behind tee, weedwack 50%DONE
17) chainsaw DONE
18) polesaw left side DONE

...and that's it :!:
Did I miss anything?

Oh, also Sean, Kevin, and the Tavos built 4 new SWEET benches. One will go on 16. I was thinking 4, 6, & 7 or maybe 12 for the others. Any other suggestions?
And we will be fixing the incorrect tee signs and getting new ones for 13, 15, & 16.

Some more good course work ACCOMPLISHED today. In fact everyday this week, people will be out there working on making it pretty. It will be looking the best ever for tournament.
Today we cleared out behind 11s tee so there is plenty of room...and a BENCH. Additionally, hole 16s tee has been totally cleared and widow maker removed. So now there is plenty of room there...and a BENCH. Some good weedwacking accomplished on 12 and new benches on 4, 10, & 11 for now.

Thanks to Dustin and Aubin for helping out.

And special thanks to Sean, Kevin, & the Tavo Bros; we have FIVE new beautiful and sturdy benches on the course.

More blood, sweat, and tears have been left on the course. But as a result Hole 12 is ready for the tournament and Hole 13 is 90% done. They are both looking the best ever!

WORKDAY this Saturday. Then play if people are interested. Also there is talk of having a Monday league at Fairfield University so people can see the course before the tourney.

Big Update for the workday this Saturday Sept 29...9:00-12:00.

This Saturday is National Public Lands Day and we are teaming up with Groundwork Bridgeport to clean up Veteran's Memorial Park including trash removal, invasive plant removal, trail clearing, seedling planting, etc. This is absolutely perfect timing as we were already planning a workday for our October 7th tournament. I'd love to plant some seedlings in a few particular spots! Come join us in making this park and disc golf course sparkle.

Today I met with Jack Dillon of Groundwork Bridgeport. He is expecting between 30-70 volunteers at the National Public Lands Day this Saturday at Veteran's Park. THIS IS HUGE FOR US. I'm hoping we can bring at least 10 people to help.

On Saturday volunteers will split into three different crews with these primary goals:
- litter removal
- plant trees
- spread woodchips

Schedule is to work from 9-12 and play after. Wear long pants and closed toe shoes. We will have tools, but could use some extra tarps and wheelbarrows.

Mayor Finch will be arriving to help around 10:30 and we need to represent the growing Bridgeport disc golf community. Please consider giving back by joining us to help make Vets sparkle.
