My first thought is that whoever put in gets the cash payout. If you put in and your partner doesn't, then you would get all the cash (unless you wanna be cool and split it with your partner). If you both put in for the birdie pot than you would both split it if the birdie pot was hit.
I know you don't know who your partner is going to be, so paying before partners are picked is part of the "gamble" I guess. I don't think I see any issues arising where one partner pays in and the other doesn't and then misses a put on PURPOSE that would get the birdie pot won (that would be dumb and most likely cost them the round). Yes, it would suck if your partner did no work to get the birdie pot BUT bought into the birdie pot (especially if you didn't buy in), but that's part of the gamble I guess. It allows the newer players an equal chance at winning it too, I guess.
Short answer BUY IN and no worries! Any other thoughts?
