I can't make it Tuesday. I have to work late. Titan, if you are going to be there that early do you want to stop by and pick up my GPS? I can give you a quick lesson on marking points. Once we have the points I can load em into a map and draw pretty line for ya. Let me know.

Re: ACOE DG COURSE KEENE DESIGN HELP NEEDED&RESURGEofENERGY
My apologies!
I am also out for Tuesday; My daughter's first high school soccer game. Is there another day I could meet some folks, get a sense of the new layout, and get to clearing some fairways?? I could do Wednesday, or Thursday, this week, I think....Titan, if you are marking stuff, and we can slog our way through, let us know the next step that will help pave the way...stuff we can do on our own when our schedule's allow... Thanks, and sorry to miss Tuesday! ~Chris

yes, once the course is all flagged out a local(s) has a solid grasp of the design/direction/plan of attack and of course when ACOE green light will be plenty for the "locals" to do
you guys have such a higher population and limited..well no other courses to maintain/fund raise for. Every person attracted/attached to DG in that area and acutely/regionally abroad can help out in some form to get this project further along
KDGC already has 9 baskets and between all the SVT/NH DG'ers looking for a course to play at I trust the $$$ will flow in Keene more so then an already established DG hot spot as resources in these hot spots are scarce of late until bigger local connections can be made with local businesses/players to build up the solid core of people to upkeep/upgrade the course
This Tuesday Rob and I will tie up the loose ends, educate him on logistics so he can then communicate to the KDGC for future reference.
My suggestion, as I have switched my mentality to this as well in my area projects..instead of moving forward with limited resources and relying on a few people is to continue gaining support for KDGC by connecting with local people, businesses, media. As I have found 2-5 crazy DG warriors sometimes just doesn't cut it..it takes an army of soldiers or ya get burnt or put forth a subpar product...as the theme of trusting/relying on current DG'ers in the community to get stuff done is just not reality..as many are busy, burnt or just not interested
15-30 person leagues..filled events..1-5 at scheduled for months work days...sometimes along side each other...most of the dominate names in DG are just players not workers..it is these local guys that are out there on the course/communities that will help with work..finding and making bonds with them is crucial

It's clearing out here in Keene, weather should hold ok for the day.
I'd be a lot better if those trees didn't get in the way.

I still have a GPS here at my house if folks wanna try marking the tees and basket locations for a map. NP if you don't, Rob can fill me in on the details with a walk through another day. Sorry i can't make it. All work and no play...

Re: ACOE DG COURSE KEENE DESIGN HELP NEEDED&RESURGEofENERGY
We walked all 18 today, just need the green light from the ACOE which we are confident will happen. Cool thing about this course is that there are alt tees for the holes, unlike alot of courses that just move up rec tees 100 feet up from the pro tee, these are well placed and offer an entirely different view-shot-and fairway to the pin. After playing the regular layout, the arm may need a break, this course is no joke and will challenge everyone.
There is a ton of work to be done, but it will happen. I have created a photo album so folks can check out the progress as it occurs.

Re: ACOE DG COURSE KEENE DESIGN HELP NEEDED&RESURGEofENERGY
yes the course is gonna be a tough one for sure
cool thing is no PI,no ferns,no underbrush anywhere on course
so the few walks/tough traversing(hills) the course has makes up by having smooth landing/walking zones every where
3 alt tees are leaning towards ace runs, 2 lean towards par 4 land and offer another look at the hole. The rest are all legit and fall under the easier 3,2 label.
there are 2 obstacles to overcome here...getting people up to hole 1..some steps in the form of large rocks, booms ect ect needs to be created for the long term
the other is a small culvert and crushed rocks need to be reapplied to hole 18's exit..so we are not walking through a swamp when wet..in all reality this is pretty simple..esp with a front end loader
The ACOE is equipped for those task and usually has no issues in regards to those task at other ACOE properties
the rest of the course is well designed to include cart road access points for tee, fairway constructions..this will be vital when actual work occurs
if chipping is the way we go with debris plenty of spots out there to chip
there are 2 spots on course where future evolution(tees) will be tough..it will take a nut case to get it done..I trust a nutcase will emerge eventually
remember this course stuff can takes years to get the vision complete..I have some notes in truck will type out later
when ever the walk through is IMO would be the next step here as we are ready for green light and then we will move to marking trees that need to be cut
once green lighted...we need to get this property labeled via gps mapping software as mentioned in an above post
like no other course I have ever seen the major logistics here were entry, exit to course as the access points were just not in great spots leaving us with major logistical headaches
so now we have a 100% wooded course..not one blade of grass..what we lack in course terrain diversity(fields, woods, ect) we make up in cool shots,elevation..we found some cool features and highlighted some great green areas
Thanks Rob,Mark for coming out another fun day out there

Great news guys!!! Wish I could have been there. I'll send an email to the ACOE today to try and nail them down on a day/time for the walk through. Are all the tees, and basket locations flagged?

Re: ACOE DG COURSE KEENE DESIGN HELP NEEDED&RESURGEofENERGY
So...its all wooded course then? Looks like it from the photos that you posted.
I have been to Otter Brook before and there's some wide open lands that are perfect for bombing shots.
Perhaps to start off with open field and then going into the woods and then out to the open at the end?
You don't want to discourage the newcomers like those Keene State College kids and families from constantly hitting the trees in the whole round and they might not want to come back again to play....
Maybe those pictures that you posted doesn't do justices?

Re: ACOE DG COURSE KEENE DESIGN HELP NEEDED&RESURGEofENERGY
Hi Patrick. ACOE didn't want us throwing the main part of the park due to safety concerns as it's used pretty heavily during the summer. Some of the other open area's flooded this summer (we would have lost two baskets due to it with our first design). That left us an all wooded area. So yes, the course will be completely in the woods. There's tons of work to do, and we are planning on having shorter tees as well. Obviously it's a work in progress and the ACOE said they will work with us on cutting the larger trees so we can open things up a bit more if needed.

Re: ACOE DG COURSE KEENE DESIGN HELP NEEDED&RESURGEofENERGY
Good Points Patrick,
Believe me we looked at all of this and took it into consideration. I like the open Bombs as much the next one, the potential to do a layout with portable baskets during off season exists. As it is now though, this will be a classic New England woods course. The logisitics pretty much determine the design and flow. Between flood plains, heavy rec areaus and protected animal habitats, we used what was availalbe, this course will evolve and be a gem.
If Devens has a lovechild with Pinnacle this course could be the offspring. The pictures don't do it justice, I will continue to update them as progress evolves, hope you can come check it out, I would also like a tour and a chance to play the course in Brattleboro, looks good.

Re: ACOE DG COURSE KEENE DESIGN HELP NEEDED&RESURGEofENERGY
OK long weekend is over
Well in basically a monsoon a design for this property was finally greenlit. To my surprise 4 of us nuts showed and even more shocking the ranger showed.
Jim is a nice guy, most all the rangers I have met are nice guys but for some reason this guy seems extra cool. Any guy who will show up in that weather for an extended period of time means serious business..that said once the time is available expect major work to get done as I suspect we have ourselves a hard worker.
This will be the first ACOE property to construct its original design in a fresh area using no existing recreational area. The original intent behind ACOE properties at least in this area according to Dave Stidham was to use resources already there..concrete areas for tees, open areas,ectect..this was cool for sure got DG in..but as we have learned at our respective DAMS
is multi use means multi headaches..and we have evolved the courses to have constructed tees, and searching for new untouched land/redesign to strengthen the difficulty and get away from multi use
Tully hole 1..great hole but oh boy the headaches, plenty of other areas for headaches but fewer then most other dams
West T..wowzer..those stupid planes and walkers are well dumb
Barre..the bird watchers and so many other people at the picnic area right by hole 1..hunting..lol
Buff..wow..lets just all agree the list is long
these courses are all now brainstorming/working on how to increase difficulty..lesson learned from work at Tullz and speaking/observing with other DAM warriors/rangers..some holes are great for sure and this is no dis on any of the dams by no means.
these courses all display DG in regards to hey here is DG..but we are now at the stage in DG we don't need to waive are DISC in peoples faces and scream hey play this over here..right here..we can just make it known DG is here..right over here..fields and riprock and blah blah are not cool..sorry to say and I don't really care about mixed holes on a course..what terrain? as long as mixed shot selection can be maintained and "fair" airways can be made then I say who cares what the terrain selection is..if they wanna go bomb shots well the field is right over there..and if nobody is using it..that has been there for the last 30 years then hey throw 500 field shots..I encourage it..
Keene has a great chance to set a new case log and model for future DAM properties..so we can start staying away from multi use
That said the terrain is rough bottom line..what was found out there was some amazing elevation shots up/down,great greens, and solid seams for great shaped shots all maintaining the logistic horror show of 1 entrance spot,1 exit spot within any reasonable distance to parking..and I might add the parking has logistics as there is 2 parking areas one for off season, one for on season...this virtually gave us 3 points that had to be fused into this again while maintaining a high standard for quality DG holes...and between these 3 points was a campsite that had to be buffered rather well...on the far side of the property rt 9 abuts.
IMO getting the rangers to approve the culvert and gravel bridge on hole 18 and building the steps to hole 1 is huge..2 things I figured they would understand but still wasn't sure on there mentality. Very cool and IMO w/o these 2 items there could be no course in that area thus rendering 50 acres useless
There will be 18 sets of short tees..I don't expect perma tees to be in next year or even the year after..they will be natural and eventually evolve..the shorts are cool and the regular layout is sick..I went for sick..and I think the
population that will play up there will appreciate sick some day..
KDGC can save the "easy" course for a limited space park 9 hole or something..Derek has some leads
Granite Gorge was awesome..we will continue to explore that front
Thanks...cya all friday to get those trees marked for cutting..it takes longer then ya think so expect a good chunk of the day
I will be there at 10am
